Rollicking and surprisingly amusing fantasy
Verified purchase
Alright, I am a dedicated reader and escaper into all things romantic comedy. But I have avoided this movie, thinking it couldn't be enjoyable because of the premise. I can happily say I was wrong. In this fantasy, a beautiful young woman (Messing) hires an ivy league educated male escort, to pretend to be her date for her sister's wedding (Mulroney).

In its amusing tone and rollicking mood it reminds me, just a little bit, of Four Weddings and a Funeral. The Cousin is hilariously inappropriate; easily my favorite character. The Air Supply joke is just too funny, when, after he spots an old poster of the 80's group (Air Supply) in the closet of her childhood bedroom, he aptly breaks out into their most famous song, "All Out of Love," while he's taking a shower. Who hasn't done that, suddenly had a song stuck in their head after talking about a singer? But in this case it's also gentle teasing.

If you like light hearted romantic comedies that offer a brilliant mix of Hollywood and British actors or movies that make good use of beautiful English settings, then you can not fail to like this one. However, this is no Jane Austen. For example, the language occasionally veers towards choice words, although it never becomes explicit. And, I wasn't sure we needed to see so much of Dermot's well defined, "less than 9% body-fat" physique.

All in all, this one gets 5 stars for its beauty, for turning what could have been a distasteful theme into something amusing, for making me laugh out loud in parts, and most of all for surprising me.

Highly Inappropriate

The main character never wears a bra. The language is vulgar and over-sexualized. I thought I remember liking this movie, so I kept watching until the end- turns out I remembered it for a different reason. There's swearing, sexual references, sexual content, sexual promiscuity, etc. Just a really terrible film. Pissed off that I've now seen it twice and wasted my life.

This movie is peopled by obnoxious and unfunny characters engaging in boring and unfunny dialog and situations. Dermot Mulroney is not very attractive (and is very short) and displays the acting chops of a stick. Debra Messing is not very attractive and is a terrible actress. The rest of the cast is only memorable in achieving great heights of mediocrity. Any comedy - any movie , actually - can hardly succeed when it has no compelling characters. Here we also have no decent script, no humor, and no innovative story line. Pass!

Light, Airy, Fantasy Love Story - A Perfect Escape From Reality
Verified purchase
This movie is as described above. Families with grown children - all involved are bright, beautiful & have no money problems whatsoever. Remember, I used the words Fantasy, & Perfect Escape from Reality. It's just a fun movie. The story line is plausible, the various hidden facts that come out little by little not really out of the range of possibility, etc. Debra Messing is so young, slender & absolutely beautiful as is Amy Adams. So curl up in your favorite chair or relax on your couch or loveseat, watch the movie, & for a little while get carried off into another world . . . I did & it's possible I might watch it again when I need watch a movie that will make me smile.

5 stars for Debra Messing
Verified purchase
The merits of this film have long since been reviewed by others. This is about the delicious Debra Messing--as an actor, not a beautiful red-head. She is fine playing the gorgeous single girl. But she's also unsure of herself and decisive, as the occasion requires. She's frantic, hurt, angry, and klutzy. Yes, Messing is unafraid to be awkward and foolish-looking. This is talent, but maybe more importantly, it's bravery. And it's very funny. Except for Sarah Parish as the wacky cousin TJ, it's hard to take one's eyes off Messing. There's just no telling what she'll do next.

Absolutely Pathetic!

I am referring to the Blu-ray, not the movie. It appears that this release for 2018 was put together by an armature. The consistency of the Blu-ray is thin and cheap. The menus appear if they were designed by a Consumer Video Editing program. There are no new extras. Just regurgitated material from the DVD. The disc is supposed to have the two actors pictured, instead of a black background.

The layout on the back is inaccurate and has detailed flaws. There are no meta-tags incorporated into the Blu-Ray's digital coding. Meaning Grace notes can not locate the movie information.

Get with the program "Universal Pictures/ Home Entertainment."

What a lovely date!

Fun, Romantic, England, what more do you need? This isn't the best film out of Hollywood, but it does what it's supposed to do: be entertaining and lets you enjoy some time watching a film, hopefully with someone you love. Debra and her leading man area fun together. He's a charmer who looks great in anything he wears. She's a lovely woman obsessing over what she should in order to please others. In the end, they find joy in being together. Set in and around England's London and countryside, this film is a great way to spend some time.

Sorry. Really bad. Couldn't through more than 10 minutes. Typically love Debta Messing. Here she's just not funny. More cartoonish. But not funny.
