I got the 39" gate for my older cat, & I would not recommend using shorter gates for cats of any age, even for seniors. Things may be fine with shorter gates on most days for a long time - until one day, there's a novel element on the other side that absolutely *blows their minds* - & they're over the fence. Some can become incredibly ambitious at any age, with the right inspiration.
