Yes. The rods and fabric are separate pieces so if you want to say, sew a cute pattern and use that instead you could. The material is strong and durable though so unless you didn't like the colors you will love this product.

I do not believe that it's real wood. It has held up really well though, our 3 yr old is constantly playing with it; turning it over, pulling the books our, hides behind it, moves it a lot, etc. And we've never had any issues with scratches on the ends or with them coming loose.
This is definitely designed to sit on a flat surface, on the floor. I don't imagine it would be safe to place on a book shelf as it could topple over if a child were to try to pull a book out of the slot.
