Mention on the phone that you will not accept a refurbished unit and demand a new one. I've never had any problems with my drives. If you have a network with 2,4, 6...etc drives set up a raid configuration. Of course you need more than one hard drive. I have the wd ex4100 with four red wd 3tb drives. I have never had a drive failure, although it requires to be plugged into two 110 outlets. Only use red or black western digital drives if you plan to set up a network. The green is not meant for multiple hard drives, especially not more than two. I have it set to raid 5 which almost assures that if one drive fails, all I have to do is remove the faulty drive and replace it with another 3tb drive. One thing to note is that you cannot put multiple size harddrives in the same network device. It will, by default, use the smallest drive and assume the rest are of equal size , causing you to waste storage space. Hope i helped and answered any other questions you migjt have forgot to ask.
Take care.
