The first several chapters of the book are very good, with well-designed word questions. But the second part of the book is essentially a repeat of the previous chapters. Some questions are almost identical. Overall, still a good book for kids who want to learn something beyond the common core curriculum.

Math that requires you to turn off your brain

These story problems are pure nonsense. They are either super simple to the point of absurdity or they require a huge amount of assumptions to reach the suggested answer. For instance, one story problem reads, "There are 70 cookies in a box. The number of raisin cookies was 1/4 the number of plain cookies. Chantalle ate 3 raisin cookies and 3 plain cookies. Find the difference between the number of raisin and plain cookies in the box in the end." The only way to reach the answer is to make the huge ASSUMPTION that there are only two types of cookies in the box. Singapore math is the death of intelligent thinking because it forces stupid/simplistic assumptions in order to reach the suggested answer. And if that doesn't kill your child's intellectual curiosity then perhaps a story problem that is just so simple that it is stupid will do the trick. For example, "Michelle gave birth to her sone when she was w years old. Find her son's age when she is 39 years old. Give your answer in terms of w." The suggested answer is 39-w. Ridiculous!
