I was looking forward to getting my new M705 to replace my aging M705 which I have enjoyed. This new M705 Marathon Performance Plus mouse advertises "7 customizable buttons" which is what my old M705 Marathon mouse has. It only has 5, unless you count swapping the left and right mouse buttons which I have no idea why someone would do that with aby-design right handed mouse. The lower thumb grip button is no longer there and it was the one I used most. The software that I used with my old M705 won't even work with the new one.

The buttons you can customize do allow for a wide range of functions or key combinations. You can also set up the same buttons for specific key combinations for specific applications A button that might be 'ctl-v' in a document editor to paste might be 'esc' in another application. This can be a little frustrating if you don't realize which application is the active one and your mouse is on another screen and you expect the button to perform it the application is is hovering over. I try to keep mine so some relatively basic system functions like volume up and volume down.

I do still very much like the feel of the mouse under my hand. It keeps my hand in a nice ergonomic position as I know my wrists are slightly rotated when I am using the mouse the same way they are when using my ergonomic keyboard. The mouse moves smoothly. Scrolling is smooth. You can press the button behind the scroll wheel and to go between smooth rolling of the wheel or engage the detents to give a more consistent scroll rate. I prefer the detents, as my experience is without it the mouse will sometimes scroll a bit more putting you slightly off the mark of where you were wanting to be. Free wheeling is nice if you need scroll a long way up or down in a document because you can give the wheel a good push and it will scroll.

For me what little bit of negative there is doesn't make me want to return it. Just a little disappointed.
