Obviously this is new so you are going to see a lot of mixed reviews… some folks don’t like change, some do. Amazon changed a good deal on this unit. I personally feel these are mostly good changes.
REMOTE: The new remote is a great update to the prior generation. It retains the TV control but add dedicated buttons for key channels and “TV” that I think make this a great choice for older users.
SETUP: Here is where I was very impressed. First Amazon actually remembered a WiFi password I told it to remember and actually used it … I did nothing to attach this to my network, it just worked. Updates worked in the background and while it slowed the system down a bit it was reasonable. The setup questions and guides were simple and it was smart enough to know I already had a fire stick and gave me the option to replicate the setup. 100% solid and impressed with this whole process… it did take some time though so be prepared.
APPS: Here is a mixed bag. I love that Amazon added new apps and has a banner of key / frequently used apps. You can configure what’s on that banner too … it’s simple click, drag and drop style with the remote. But they still make a mess of the screen space … the overall layout is cluttered and confusing. Back to the remote, this is where I think the remote and new ecosystem shine, if you just want Netflix, click the button.
TV CONTROL: This was so easy, the fire stick did all the work, I only had to adjust the volume and confirm it worked. Combo of IR and Bluetooth work great and effective every time. I have this TV behind my bathroom mirror and using while getting ready, no issues with it behind a wall and glass.
ELDER USE: Maybe a funny category but the main reason I upgraded was to test for my parents. They are in their 80s and while they are somewhat tech savvy they have their struggles. The old versions of the fire stick were clumsy, not well integrated and often slow and glitchy. The new remote saves the day and the new setup and options make it so that I am comfortable upgrading them and feel they will get a lot more out of it.
Overall I’d say this is a solid 4+ out of 5 … plenty of room for improvement but a huge leap of prior generations.
Highly recommend and hope this was helpful!
