I decided to splurge a little on some actual tea sugar instead of dumping in a spoon of the white stuff per usual. I even went the extra step and got both cane and beet sugar to see if I could tell the difference.
And yes, you can definitely tell the difference. Just opening the bags gives you an entirely different aroma between the cane sugar and the beet sugar. I never realized just how strong an aroma cane sugar has until I had both side by side for comparison.
The beet sugar aroma isn't nearly as powerful, letting the tea shine all on it's own. As someone who'd unconsciously gotten used to the subtle caramel notes of cane sugar it threw me off a bit at first, but it definitely helps you taste more of the tea itself and less of the sweetener inside it. So if you don't mind the cost it's definitely worth the splurge on that first flush darjeeling or the like. If you're just making up a gallon of sun tea though, not so much.
