Flavoring medical food...

We use this brand of cocoa to add flavor to Elecare jr. Unflavored (liquid medical food).
My teenager gets 100% of her nutrition from drinking Elecare. The cost is roughly $1000 a month, and insurance will only cover the cost of the unflavored Elecare. It saves a lot of money flavoring her drinks with this instead. She loves it, and it's always shipped fast and packaged well.

cadmium levels too high for kids

The flavor is nice, but Consumer lab tested it and it contains cadmium that exceeds the EU's total daily exposure limit for children. Don't freak yet! Cocoa is commonly contaminated with tiny amounts of cadmium and sometimes even lead (via air & soil), but checking lab reports for purity is prudent when it comes to children. By ConsunerLab it has highes level of flavanols of all cocoa tested. Unfortunatly it has high cadmium level, too. For that reason it is not approved by CosumerLab. By Agency for Toxic Substances only 1-10% is absorbed in the body and should be safe. I continue to use it.

This cocoa powder was shipped and delivered fast, the packaging was neat.

Unfortunately, it gave me indigestion, it felt like it was sitting in my stomach for hours (it was 2 cups of hot water with a tablespoon of cocoa powder). It does say on the packaging that it is non-alkalized, however it gave me a reaction similar to that food/supplements processed with alkali give me (for example polyphepan powder, a natural enterosorbent used for detox, in which the main ingredient lignin is processed with alkali). So, should I trust the label or my own digestion? I have pretty low stomach acid, and I know what food processed with alkali feels like.

I recently found organic non-alkalized cocoa powder on swanson, the taste and aroma is much more chocolaty and fresh with the swanson brand, and NO indigestion so I am switching to that one.

So, for comparison - regular walmart cocoa powder tastes and smells like old tasteless powder, Now Food brand smells and tastes better. But when you try swanson brand cocoa, you actually feel super aroma and taste of fresh chocolate. Is it different manufacturing process? different processing standards? I don't know. Don't have time to dig into that right now. Description is the same, however, uncomfortably for the sellers of this particular brand, your nose, taste buds and stomach speak more than a label. Try and see for yourself.

Tastes like chocolate dirt

Bought this to go with the same company's whey isolate. The whey tasted so bad I had to clench something in my left hand really hard each time I swallowed. I had hoped this chocolate would remedy the problem, but it was a little like sprinkling dirt on a poop sandwich. Now I clench AND have to fight the gag reflex. It's sitting in my cupboard for now. Not sure what's next.
