How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsLots of bad reviews, but not a bad crate at all. required some ingenuity to make it safe for my boy
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2021
Lots of bad reviews on this being dangerous. Let’s be honest, blame is 50/50 here.

1. Pet owners, you cannot leave your dog unattended in a crate like this if he is not already crate trained. If your pet dies trying to escape the crate it is your fault.

2. The latches could possibly work loose with an upset dog trying to get out. There is a solution and it is cheap. After you add this to your cart, click the search bar and type “ranger bands”. Then buy them. You will use these to keep the crate latched. (See the photos in my review)

3. This crate isn’t made to house the 3 year old staffie mix you just found on the side road. It is made to keep a crate trained large strong dog or to crate train a puppy.

But if your dog is big, strong, and hasn’t been crate trained properly you will destroy the crate and injure himself in the process. It’s not the crates fault. It is your fault if this happens.

Now for the part about the one I received (this is my 3rd). Two have been perfect. The last one was damaged in shipping. That made assembly a terrible pain. But after straightening the bends it was fine. I am sure I could have contacted the seller or Amazon and had a new one shipped but it just wasn’t that important to me.

1.0 out of 5 starsOur puppy is dead
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2018
Our 11 week old German Shepard puppy was able to open the top latch and tried to get out of the top of this kennel. He was wedged in the cage so tightly that when he was found he was dead. We were gone less than 30 minutes. Our children are devastated. We are devestated. This kennel was suppose to be a safe place for our puppy. I hope no other family has to experience a tragedy like this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inferior quality and potentially unsafe.
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2018
Size: 42-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Double DoorVerified Purchase
I bought a crate this size from amazon late last summer. It was amazon basics. That crate is great.
I got this one as an alternate to keep at my parents’ house.
It is NOT the same crate. This one is name brand, but much lower quality. The latches are different (looser and shorter). I noticed this as soon as I put it together, realized it was a different crate, and looked at the reviews.
Luckily, the crate I received doesn’t have any sharp bits that could hurt my best little friend. But after reading reviews saying that the metal is flimsy, I tested it and i could actually bend the wire slightly with my bare hands.
I didn’t send this back bc we only need it a few times a year. Also, my dog is only 9 lbs. but I could 100% see a bigger dog being able to escape from this (and possibly being hurt in the process, not good).

2.0 out of 5 stars Not entirely happy. Some Safety issues with small puppies
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2022
Size: 36-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Double DoorVerified Purchase
First the good. The crate seems durable and should hopefully last awhile. Also the plastic tray underneath appears to be good quality as well. My puppy sleeps on a mattress over the plastic so the puppy doesn't make contact with it directly, but should their be a pee accident, I'm confident the tray will prevent it from spreading out.

My biggest concern is with the side door. There is just way too much give in that door. I can see how a puppy could push on the door enough to poke a head through and get stuck or worse. In order to prevent harm to my puppy I pushed that side door up against a wall and used baby locks on the top and bottom to prevent puppy from being able to even push on that door. I shouldn't have to "rig" up a fix on a product to keep my dog safe.

The little clamps holding the sides and the top/bottom together don't rotate well at all on my crate. They get stuck and prevent the edges from rotating for setup or take down.

And finally the top latch on the front door does not smoothly open and close. I'm not sure if the crate was bent in transit but that latch takes a lot more effort than expected to get to close and open while the latch on the bottom slides open and closed very smoothly.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this crate to anybody. It's setup and being used and would be too much of a hassle to take down and return so we are using it as is.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Crate, Not Worth the Money.
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019
Size: 48-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Single DoorVerified Purchase
So I wanted to wait an adequate amount of time before leaving a review so that I could really test this product at first. I'll start by saying that I chose this crate based off of the good reviews. I'm not sure if I got a crate that was a little off or bent maybe? But it was kind of a struggle to put together and it's hard to lock the doors when closing it, I need to squeeze the door against the crate in order for the slide to lock. Secondly, the divider wasn't easy to install, it hurt my hands to have to squeeze part of the crate in order for it to hook into place. The divider also doesn't touch the base of the crate, there's about an inch space where their paws can slip under (and potentially get stuck) and if you have a toy or blanket in there, it can go on the other side and get trapped where the dog can't reach it. Overall this crate is mediocre, I expected a lot better for the money but am pretty disappointed with the purchase.

Not a great crate. It came folded and locked in on itself on one side–as in some of the hooks that secure the top when its unfolded were locked to the bottom. Took two people with now sore thumbs and a screwdriver to get unhooked. Once unfolded the hooks on top were bent in on themselves too tightly to secure the crate together so this became another thing to have to bend by hand in order for the crate to function. Even after I bent these out the fit was too tight and the handle broke instantly when trying to attach it. I also suspect that with there only being door locks on one side, and not also on the top like the one I had previously, there is going to be some escape issues in our future. Overall not worth the literal pain to unfold.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fine product that arrived broken, old model, never heard back
Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2022
Size: 36-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Double DoorVerified Purchase
Ordered a “slightly used” crate for a discount to save some money. The description said it would be minor cosmetic damage/scratches, which there were. The scratches were on the bottom tray and they were minimal, so a great deal considering!

However, the box arrived damaged and when we opened it we discovered that the bottom tray was completely cracked with a piece broken off, clearly damaged in transit. The crate was also clearly a different or older model without the advertised “paw block” bars near the latches, a feature we intentionally chose the crate for.

We were getting our rescue dog in a matter of days and did not have time to return it and receive a replacement in time, so we messaged the manufacturer immediately, to inquire about getting a replacement tray, etc. Directly contacting the manufacturer was advertised as the only up option in the Amazon app. We never heard back, and it has been weeks.

Overall a fine product, but poor shipping packaging that led to a broken product, and poor communication.

2.0 out of 5 stars Keep an eye out for sharp metal points
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2017
Size: 24-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Double DoorVerified Purchase
Writing this review based on early set up and first hour experiences. Crate itself was an easy set up (24" in this case) and feels sturdy. The one recommended for my mini dachshund is a good fit for her size, so I was glad to have that guide. What I'm more concerned about right now is a number of joints that look to be misaligned or unwelded that create a number of sharp points inside the crate about 3-4 inches up from the floor. I've attached pictures, but that specific joint is used 8 times in the crate, near each corner at the top and bottom of the crates outer walls. All 8 have that misaligned metal pictured, and at least half of those feel sharp enough that I won't have my dog try out the kennel until I can find some safe way to cover those edges.

This all comes after the crate itself showed up a few days later than originally posted, so having to wait another few days to start training while I figure out a fix for an out-of-box safety hazard is more than a little frustrating.

2.0 out of 5 stars It was returned immediately
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2018

This item was received so damaged (the box was not) that we could not even pull out the front door panel. The metal was twisted so badly that we couldn't get all four sides up.

I normally do not write reviews for items that arrive damaged since it could be a shipping issue. But, this company uses different brand names and sells their items at different online/brick and mortar stores. We decided not to purchase such a large, heavy crate online again and went to a local chain pet store. We bought the same type crate (42", two door, divider) and brought it home. Upon opening the box we discovered that although it was marketed under a different brand name it was manufactured by the MidWest Homes and even included the exact same instructional sheet and code for watching a crate training video as the crate returned to Amazon.

We opened the box (an undamaged box) and lo and behold: lots of metal bent where it should not be. We did manage to get all four sides up on this one and were able to finally (with lots of muscle work) get all sides secured properly although one bent piece makes it difficult to use the main door latch properly as it is crooked and tends to get stuck. I do not believe that MidWest Homes for Pets practices any sort of quality control.

And, the divider panel is not easy to use with a two door crate. The side door isn't flush with the rest of that side panel and the divider does not account for this. Getting that panel in and moving it back as our puppy grows requires me to crawl inside and pull like heck on the sides of the crate to get the panel in close enough to latch the divider.

I have a single door crate for use upstairs in our bedroom and the divider is easy breezy to use.

I wouldn't recommend this brand if needing a two door dog crate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy! It rattles *constantly* in my car.
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020
Size: 36-Inch w/ DividerStyle: Double DoorVerified Purchase
I bought this crate for my car. I’ve had three crates this year as my puppy has gotten bigger, this is the flimsiest and worst of the three which is a bummer because this one is his full grown sized crate. The latch is less secure than my other crates- I’ve included a comparison picture to show the difference. This one is just a straight latch, the better, sturdier latch is bent at the end.

But the latch is a minor annoyance compared to my big complaint- it rattles constantly. Obviously this is a possibility when using a crate in a car, but please keep in mind I’ve used three crates (three different brands) in my car this year so I have a base for comparison. This crate drives me crazy it rattles so much. I put duct tape around the latches to try and cut down on the sound. I zip tied the unused latches so they can’t rattle. I bought gear ties and used those to tighten every spot I could find that might possibly rattle. NONE of these things were necessary on my other crates and even after all my efforts I’ve only been able to cut down on the rattling, not eliminate it. I really regret this purchase and wish I had spent a couple bucks more to buy *any* brand other than this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars CAUTION: Dog’s leg got stuck in between hurting himself
Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021

Dog chewed up the tray so I had to cut and he still would chew it up! Tray not hard enough material. And the reason that prompt me to write a one star review is that yesterday my dog jumped of excitement when I took him out and his leg got trapped between the spaces in a way that the leg/paw got stuck between two spaces kinda like in a hook way, he screamed horribly and it was a really scary thing trying to remove his stuck paw from the crate while he was desperately moving, crying and screaming in pain. I could not let him down as he would probably break his leg and I tried stretching the metal but that didn’t work. Since the dog was desperate I had to pull the leg out as slow as I could and was able to free him out. It was a horrible experience and thankfully he was hurt but not broken bones. I ended up with scratches and hurt from my desperate dog. The poor thing was so thankful and would not move my side last night. I don’t recommend this crate as the spaces are wide and any dogs paws could get stuck like it happened to mine! Shopping around other types of crates at the moment.

2.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the quality???
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022

I purchased two of these last year to train our Black Labs. The quality was reasonable and they folded/unfolded without a lot of effort. Since then the crates have become the dogs sleeping quarters when they are in the house and have worked out very well in that regard.

Recently we completed a pair of kennels in the garage and ordered two more crates for use when the dogs are kept outdoors. The quality of the new version is horrible. The metal is much lighter and bends easily, the welds are poor and doors misaligned, and they are much more difficult to setup due to the flimsiness and alignment issues. Plus, one of the panel locking tabs is missing. These things are crap and I can no longer recommend them.
