Perfect for the cast iron pan

I have tried a few different boxed brands of cornbread and Krusteaz has the best in my opinion. The Honey Cornbread Mix has an authentic flavor. During the holidays I make a double batch and cook it in my Cast Iron Pan to get a great crust on it. I used to use butter in the bottom of the pan but switched over to vegetable oil after over heating the butter and it tastes slightly burnt on the crust. I do add slightly more melted butter in the batter than the directions call for but that is personal preference. I also recommend using unsalted butter too. This pack of 12 is also very affordable when comparing to the store prices as you can save quite a bit by buying this bulk package. I have made the honey butter topping and I do not feel this needs it but again personal preference. I always have left overs for a couple of days too.

Smells bad

As soon as I opened it there was a bad egg smell. It baked ok but the smell was still there and the texture seemed a bit off, it was kinda gummy. I order this brand in pancake mix all the time but I don't think I'll be ordering their cornbread mix again.

I am a big fan of Krusteaz muffin mixes -- I usually bake several dozen once a month or so (oat bran and fat-free banana are my favorites), then freeze them and have a couple for breakfast every morning (I nuke them on high for about 10 seconds each and they are ready). I had never tried this kind before as it's not one my local grocery stores carry, so I bought a case from amazon. The first time I baked them, they smelled AMAZING in the oven and I was looking forward to trying them. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the taste -- they were just very, very, very bland. They tasted to me somewhat like vanilla muffins (I can't taste anything like almonds in them), but actually they didn't have much of a taste at all.

With my second box, I added frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries) to the mix -- I think about a cup or cup and a half of the berries (no need to defrost them first). This improved the taste quite a bit, so I think this muffin mix just needs SOMETHING added.

I will continue to add fruit (maybe nuts too at some point) to the 10 boxes I have left, but I doubt that I will order any more. I really wanted to like these and am surprised no one else mentioned how bland they are. (Maybe it's just me.)

Tasty Cornbread, but Has a Saltier Taste Than I'd Like

The Krusteaz Cornbread and Muffin Mix is a good cornbread mix to take with you when camping or skiing. The cornbread is very easy to make - simply add milk, vegetable oil, and an egg, mix, then bake. The resulting muffin has a nice crumb, good texture, and tasty flavor. While I like this cornbread, I found it had a distinctive salty flavor to it that wasn't unpleasant, but not totally enjoyable either. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. This mix definitely doesn't compete with homemade cornbread, but of the convenience pack type cornbreads, this one was okay. I've definitely tried cornbread mixes that we liked better, but have also tried many that were much worse - this is a good middle ground mix when it comes to cornbread. Overall, if you're trying to choose between cornbread mixes, this is a decent one to consider, but there are other options that are just a bit more well balanced and tastier.

I love cornbread, especially baked in a cast iron skillet, I found the honey version a little to sweet (I like sweet, but not in my cornbread) picked this up on Amazon prime pantry and for $1.58 a box I had to try it. I'm really curious to know why the original plain cornbread mix is $2.67 vs Honey version at $1.58 ?.....I purchased the Original cornbread mix this time around !

This cornbread mix is easy and delicious. BUT I have had 2 boxes now with weevil in them. The first one I had had for about a year and hadn’t kept it in a cool place so maybe my fault. But the one I opened today I’d had in a cool place and only had it for a couple of months. I don’t know what to think. It’s probably the easiest and best tasting I’ve ever found but I don’t like throwing some away because of weevil.

I made this as directed. The cornbread physically came out great! It was nice and thick, and not too dry. However, I was not a fan of the flavor. I expected it to taste a little sweet, maybe even a bit of honey flavor, bit I did not. As a matter of fact, it didn't really taste like cornbread to me. However, I do think that the flavor of this particular cornbread would be great to make Southwestern cornbread or jalapeno bread. But by itself, I didn't like the taste of it.
