5.0 out of 5 starsPerfect for the cast iron pan
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2020
I have tried a few different boxed brands of cornbread and Krusteaz has the best in my opinion. The Honey Cornbread Mix has an authentic flavor. During the holidays I make a double batch and cook it in my Cast Iron Pan to get a great crust on it. I used to use butter in the bottom of the pan but switched over to vegetable oil after over heating the butter and it tastes slightly burnt on the crust. I do add slightly more melted butter in the batter than the directions call for but that is personal preference. I also recommend using unsalted butter too. This pack of 12 is also very affordable when comparing to the store prices as you can save quite a bit by buying this bulk package. I have made the honey butter topping and I do not feel this needs it but again personal preference. I always have left overs for a couple of days too.

As soon as I opened it there was a bad egg smell. It baked ok but the smell was still there and the texture seemed a bit off, it was kinda gummy. I order this brand in pancake mix all the time but I don't think I'll be ordering their cornbread mix again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really delicious BUT

This corn bread mix is literally the amazing, really easy to make, the husband LOVES it. Tastes delicious with a little honey butter. But yet, it felt lazy because come on… it’s a few ingredients and surely, I could do better. I don’t personally like one of my best dishes, chili, to be marred by a boxed cornbread. What if someone asked how I made the cornbread and I replied- from a box. No. So I don’t use this gem anymore and guess what, it is JUST as easy to make your own. It’s less money in the long run but more importantly, you can win points by saying you made it from scratch. Easiest, fool proof thing. See this recipe below. I add a little honey to the batter and it’s even better than the box.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup neutral oil or melted butter
1 large egg
1 cup milk

Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or cast iron skillet well and set aside. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a medium mixing bowl, add the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Whisk to combine well.
Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients and add your oil or butter, milk, and egg. Stir just until the mixture comes together and there are only a few lumps remaining.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is a deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krusteaz Honey Cornbread Mix
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2016

Apparently several varieties of cornbread are included under this listing. This review is for the Honey Cornbread mix – full fat. This is not my first box of this product. I use it when time is short and I need to pull a meal together quickly.

Taste is subjective which probably explains the difference in opinion regarding this product. Some people like jiffys (I don’t) and/or love marie callendars (a family member calls it cake not cornbread), but I think Krusteaz is closer in flavor and texture to made from scratch.

On the box is a recipe using the mix but adding canned corn kernels, bacon crumbles, grated cheddar and chopped green onion. Chile was the plan for dinner so I changed the recipe by adding 1/2 cup cooked frozen corn kernels (don’t like canned,) 1/2 cup grated cheddar and a tablespoon of dried red bell pepper to the mix. The mix itself requires 2/3 cup milk, an egg and 1/3 cup oil/melted butter.

Besides additional flavor, the extra ingredients also added texture and visual interest – all with minimal effort. I prepare the mix with oil (olive) rather than butter and the taste is fine, although no question butter would make it even more delicious.

The mix is slightly sweet and moist. I used the directions for high altitude. And, because I was using a dark tin muffin pan adjusted the temperature down to 395 degree instead of 400, and reduced the cooking time to 18 minutes instead of 20 and they were perfectly cooked. It is easy to overcook the batter and end-up with a dry crumbly result, so I always test with a bamboo skewer when it a few minutes before bake time is complete.

The muffins/cornbread freezes well although they should be consumed within three months which is when the taste will begin to deteriorate. Lately, although the regular cornbread mix is usually in stock at my local market, the honey cornbread variety is not always on the shelf so it is good to find it here. The “best buy” date on the box was fourteen months in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars More Bread than HONEY CORN BREAD
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2018

I guess the manufacture changed the ingredients for this corn bread mix which I had purchased a large size about year ago from BJ store thought it was as almost as good as my recipe. So when I saw smaller box on Amazon decide to purchase it's was not moist, didn't look or taste like cornbread at all, completely disappointed will never purchase this product again. Took a look at first ingredient enriched unbleached wheat flour which was not the case when I had purchase it from BJ's Store. Krusteaz need to be investigate for misrepresentation of it's cornbread product and Amazon should stop selling it until they change their recipe back to cornmeal to be their first ingredient not the third after sugar. REALLY DISAPPOINTING.

We are also Penguin Cornbread lovers. This stuff is much more like cornbread from my childhood (late 50s), which is when I fell in love with cornbread. We tried it, and immediately came up with an idea, which we tested, and which works like a CHARM. Make the mix as directed, but use half and half butter and vegetable oil instead of the whole 1/3 cup of melted butter. Here's the trick- we took a can of sweet yellow corn, and had it ready- drained and heated to just sizzling in a frying pan, to heat it a bit and dry it a bit. Dump that into the mix, and wisk it fast and heavy, then into the pre-greased 9 x 9 pan, and right into the oven. Bake for about 28 to 30 minutes at 375. Try not to kill each other over the last piece- there are 11 more boxes left in the case! (And if you're into that sweet cornbread taste, I'm sure you could add some sugar to the mix without wrecking it)

BEST “homemade” style cornbread out of a box ever! Not only does my family like it but when we had company over they raved about it & devoured it.. could not believe it was a mix. Rivals the bread at our local restaurant that everyone loves. It is a moist recipe, not a dry one, so if you are looking for that type, you may not love it as much as we do. Has a little sweetness to it. If you do have leftovers, cover tightly & refrigerated it will keep. We also use this cornbread sometimes in place of biscuits for sausage gravy. It’s a different pairing but good nonetheless, you get a little sweet & salty thing going on with the honey bread vs the sausage spices...
I use a brown enamelware baking pan, greased, and it turns out delicious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Krusteaz Honey Cornbread!

I have been making my cornbread from scratch for many years. Until one day my sister-in-law served Krusteaz Honey Cornbread at dinner. It is so good! Now I keep a box or 2 of Krusteaz in the pantry at all times. I told my son about it and he became a Krusteaz lover. Thanks to him, I learned of a few more Krusteaz baking mixes that are also outstanding - he recommends their muffin and cake mixes. I give Krusteaz 5 lick your lips smiley faces.

you don't use the 1/3 cup vegetable oil. I used 1/3 cup pumpkin puree (*not* pumpkin pie filling), you could you that or unsweetened apple sauce or plain yogurt on its place. The oil gives it a very bland flavor, makes a dry texture and adds unnecessary fat. I also used a 9×9 Corningware baking dish and I baked it for 30 minutes and it came out perfect. I will be buying this again in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tasty Cornbread, but Has a Saltier Taste Than I'd Like
Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2020

The Krusteaz Cornbread and Muffin Mix is a good cornbread mix to take with you when camping or skiing. The cornbread is very easy to make - simply add milk, vegetable oil, and an egg, mix, then bake. The resulting muffin has a nice crumb, good texture, and tasty flavor. While I like this cornbread, I found it had a distinctive salty flavor to it that wasn't unpleasant, but not totally enjoyable either. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. This mix definitely doesn't compete with homemade cornbread, but of the convenience pack type cornbreads, this one was okay. I've definitely tried cornbread mixes that we liked better, but have also tried many that were much worse - this is a good middle ground mix when it comes to cornbread. Overall, if you're trying to choose between cornbread mixes, this is a decent one to consider, but there are other options that are just a bit more well balanced and tastier.
