4.0 out of 5 starsLogitech Illuminated Keyboard K740
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016
A straightforward, elegantly-designed, rectangular and wired keyboard with backlit keys so you can see what the computer buttons are that you want to depress when you're typing in a darkened room. I decided I wanted a wired keyboard -- since wireless keyboards are more fragile in comparison, and, wireless keyboards that have backlit keys will drain their rechargeable or removable batteries much too quickly. Thus, I settled for a wired one that's, "low maintenance." And if you're looking for a keyboard with multiple colors and wild housing designs to appeal to the eyes and minds of gamers from ages 10 to 17, this isn't the keyboard for you. All the alphanumerics are backlit with white L.E.D.s. -- looks more professional, more elegant (and in my opinion, it's more appealing to practical-minded adults) to keep the color scheme limited and consistent for its backlit design. The alphanumerics themselves are laser-etched for a precision appearance. All the keys have a shallow depth and a responsive, light touch with a near-muted, click-tactile feedback for ergonomic finger strikes; they're part and parcel to its overall low profile. Like a lot of electrically-powered backlit keyboards -- don't get it wet -- otherwise, keys simply won't respond for shorting it out. (If this keyboard was waterproof I would have rated it with the full five stars). Function keys on the top row are either software-programmable, or they have preset functions enabled via the same software. Even if you didn't use the keyboard's software that comes with it, Windows recognizes it as a standard keyboard device anyway, and it starts working as soon as you plug it into any viable USB port. A nice, clean, fast feature are its manual adjustments for key brightness and sound volume, and these four keys are located in one row in the upper right corner. After I wore out the first keyboard after using it for several years (I shorted out the backlighting of a few keys for accidentally spilling drinks on it over the years), I decided that this keyboard was good enough for me to purchase this exact same model, again ...and I did just that.

1.0 out of 5 starsA Cheap Clone of a Formerly Excellent Product.
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018
I have the "original" version of this keyboard, purchased when it was a top-tier Logitech product (that cost twice as much). After 9+ years, this older versionhas been working flawlessly until the last few weeks. I'm actually using it right now.

I tried replacing it several years ago with another 740. Actually, I tried replacing it three times. All three replacements had CTRL keys that would lock up. I finally concluded that these were no longer the original 740, but cheaper replacements that Logitech is branding "740". Externally they *appear* to be the same, but the scissor-action button mechanics have been substituted with less durable parts. They weigh substantially less, and the backlighting is brighter (not controllable) and light "leaks" out from behind the keys.

Basically, Logitech has "value-engineered" this product. It looks *identical* to the original, but is actually a lower quality, mid-range substitute.

Logitech is still up to its old tricks. 'Should have expected it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I love Logitech, I hate this keyboard.

I love Logitech. They stand behind their products. I wouldn't buy anything else, Logitech has made me a loyal customer.

I bought this keyboard for the backlighting. I'm on my second keyboard (warranty) because the keys are very fragile.

This is a scissor switch keyboard. Scissor switches were common in older laptops. Most of those hold up fairly well but this setup does not. The keys begin to crunch and will not depress normally at times as if something is stuck under them. I've tried compressed air to clear it but there were no foreign objects. I had three keys not functioning (left shift, #6 on the numpad, and space). It was going back for warranty so I decided to see if I could fix the keys before calling it in.

I work in IT. In older laptops you could remove the key, clear the object or fix the scissor. I could not with this keyboard. There was no way to reassemble the scissor once the key is pulled off. What I did learn was that there were no foreign objects as I had suspected. The switches are just that bad.

If it weren't for the bad switches this would be a rock star keyboard. It's thin, quiet, and the backlighting is very helpful for my situation.

You could still take you chances because Logitech will stand behind this if you run into a problem.

Sorry Logitech, I've never given you a one-star review. I want you to succeed. There's something wrong with these switches.

2.0 out of 5 stars WAS the best wired keyboard in Logitech repertoire (past tense)
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2017

Keyboards are highly individual-preference items but for me this is head-and-shoulders the best keyboard from Logitech in terms of tactile sensation. Key presses provide positive feedback with a travel distance of about 2mm. Key pressure is moderate which ensures decent tactile feedback.

Other considerations. The keyboard is indeed very slim, elegant and the white back-light is even across the keyboard. Not super bright but appropriate to our office environment. I have no need of an illuminated keyboard - unfortunately Logitech does not (appear to) make a comparable keyboard without the back-light.

-------------

Since first writing this review (yesterday), 3 of the keys have become skewed or have fallen off entirely. The CTRL key isn't working properly.

I read in one of the earlier reviews that quality has suffered. Unfortunately I can confirm this observation. Looking at the keyboard several of the keys are lop-sided and probable candidates for falling off or jamming. I have not seen this issue on the previous 7 keyboards (all K740) so I have to guess that Logitech have changed something about the manufacture or assembly of these keyboards. Only Logitech can answer that question!

Anyhow, for an expensive keyboard this should not be happening. As a result I've taken 3 stars off the review. Logitech, whatever you've done in respect of manufacture, you need to rethink.

2.0 out of 5 stars Loved this initially but after 3 weeks turned out to be junk like everything else

I work online like many and sadly spilled juice on my last keyboard. I wanted a solid wired replacement and this one fits the bill. I sent 2 that I previously ordered back because some of the keys didn't work or it just felt cheap. I did a ton of homework to arrive at this one. I don't usually leave feedback unless a product pleasantly delights me, or unpleasantly makes me feel severely ripped off. In this case I was pleasantly delighted. I especially loved that the actual letter, numbers etc. light up. As opposed to so many others that have lit keyboards but it seems like the light comes from between the keys vs the actual symbols on the keys. It also seems to have at least 3 or so degrees of brightness. Cap lock is important to me and in bottom right side of keys. Update. I initially loved this keyboard, but a few weeks later, not so much. It felt vvvvvvvery well made and durable, (notice how I misspelled the word 'very?' That's because a little piece of lint got in between the 'v' key and the 'b' key. I stuck my pinky finger nail in between those keys to remove the lint. I had tried the canned air but for some reason it would not come out unless I manually remo-ed that lint. I ha-e spent the last 2 hours trying to put that 'v' key back on, but a little tiny piece broke off the back of the key so it will no longer click back onto the poorly made garbage plastic housing that fits under the key. The more I fiddle with it the more I fear I'm going to flick off the surrounding keys. I initially lo-ed how this keyboard felt to type on. But I'm sick of doing hours of research, and still getting sold junk. If you do a search in the questions with the 'key' word 'keys breaking off' you will see their are many others who've had same issue. Guess I will ha-e to return this one too. Wow. I'm so done with cheapness and greed. Why do manufacturers ha-e to be so cheap these days?? Guess I'm back to the keyboard homework drawing board. Shame on you Logitech. Today's consumers are not idiots.

4.0 out of 5 stars A realistic answer if this is the best keyboard
Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2016

I have a love/hate relationship with Logitech and their products. I can't deny that some (not all) of what they make is vastly superior to any other brand/model available. I'm talking about a select few products when I say that and the K740 is easily among them. But the trade-off with all Logitech products is that they last only so long and when they die, they are pretty much useless. The other thing Logitech has built up a reputation for is their callous lack of after sales support. My experiences trying to get support have always been met with a "don't care" attitude. So with that in mind, why did I just buy my third K740 in 5 years? Because it's the best (if not one of the most expensive) general purpose keyboards out there. I've learned a few things along the way to share:

When a Logitech mouse or keyboard fails it can't be fixed. I tried saving $10 by buying a so-called "certified refurbished" K740 through an unknown Amazon seller but it was junk and the seller wouldn't do anything about it, not even reply to me. Pay the extra few dollars and get a brand-new one!

If you are going to get a K740 don't even consider shopping around, no one comes close to Amazon's price, not the office supply stores, not the membership clubs, not the discount superstores. The other store’s prices aren’t even close even if they have the K740 on sale. Just be sure to check closely that Amazon is the actual seller, not a third party. Look closely, as that changes often, sometimes even after you save it to your shopping list.

Wait for Amazon to put it on sale, which seems to be every few weeks. The difference can be substantial.

And finally, just learn to grin and bear it like I did when your Logitech keyboard or mouse drops dead, because one day it will. I've learned to stop getting frustrated with them or even making an attempt at contacting Logitech service. If I get 2-3 years of good use out of any Logitech product I'm satisfied and I've learned not to even try switching brands. I just swallow hard and buy another new Logitech.

I like this keyboard, but I’m not too fond of having to buy a new one every few years. Overall it earns a 4-star rating but I still recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quality of this keyboard has gone downhill
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017

I have purchased several of the Logitech K740 keyboard over the past few years. I do transcription work so my keyboard takes a beating. That said, I used to purchase maybe one keyboard per year. Today I came to this page to reorder as I'm in need of a new one and was shocked to see that I bought this in February, 2017. It is now July 1, 2017 and I have had the keyboard for just over 4 months. As you can see by the photo, the S, E, R, N keys are worn beyond recognition and the space bar has a hole in it as well. As other reviewers have mentioned, quality has really gone downhill. I still love this keyboard and have found nothing that compares in terms of size and stroke. But for only 4 months of heavy use, I am forced to look elsewhere for something comparable. Three stars only because I still love the way it types. In my line of work, speed is money and I type fastest on this model. But it's far too expensive to replace every 4 months!

UPDATE: Against my better judgement but mostly because I couldn't find something comparable, I purchased yet another one of these keyboards on August 18, 2017. Today is September 19, 2017 and the "K" key just popped off the keyboard and I can't get it to stay on. DO NOT BUY THIS KEYBOARD. I am n now trying to find something similar, as I like how thin it is and the depth of the keys and the fact that they are backlit. So unhappy! This used to be a phenomenal keyboard, and for over $60.00 it still should be!

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 year old and keys are failing and the black paint is wearing off the transparent keys.
Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2020

Logitech wants their products to prematurely fail so the ignorant keep buying more from them. My keyboard is a year old and the space bar, and other frequently used keys, often "bounce" or give you double keystrokes which is beyond annoying. So you type "double" and you get "doouble" instead. And their "laser etched keys" is total marketing made up nonsense. A proper lighted keyboard uses two colors of plastics to mold the keycaps with one being transparent in which case the keycaps will last forever. This designed to fail keyboard has clear keys painted black except where the letters are. After a year of only modest use the paint is wearing thin in spots with extra light shining through. It looks especially tacky in the dark. And further the function keys instead of lighting up F1 to F12 light up with their goofy functions that few people actually use. So if you're typing in a dark room and need a function key, good luck picking the right one. This is yet another Logitech fail.

1.0 out of 5 stars TOO BASIC FOR THE PRICE
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2020

The keyboard is interesting. Has all the keys for a good experience although they are two close together and you will most likely have a lot of spelling errors as well as creating many issues with the Caps Lock key. The keyboard has wonderful multimedia keys and set up nicely. The back-lighting is perfect. There are many problems which will plague many of your uses. One of which is the first issue of all of the keys are to close to each other. The next issue is the Del key spans two rows so when you think you are doing something else like changing the Insert function, it turns out you are deleting something. A major flaw change which should never have been done to the middle group between the standard keyboard layout and the number key layout. Over time, the feel of the keys can create bad links between the key and the underlying electronic switches. You think you might be pressing the keys correctly though as those switches wear out (less than 6-months of use) your typing and productivity suffers. The older the keyboard becomes, the worse the condition takes place. And when it begins to affect the Space bar, well, you'll need to replace the entire keyboard with a new one. It's the first Logitech keyboard I've ever purchased which began to degrade rapidly from the first day I began using it. First one key and then another etc. It might be several weeks before you realize the keyboard is malfunctioning and it isn't you making the typing mistakes.

The Review of Star ratings has a group titled "Sleep mode". There is no sleep mode with this keyboard.

I'm having similar issues with their mice so I'm thinking that Logitech is no longer the company they were once known for high quality products in keyboards and mice. I've had to replace multiple Logitech keyboards some of which were quite expensive (over $100) which failed within the first 15 months and several mice which burned through batteries quickly. Instead of this keyboard, I almost purchased a battery operated keyboard with back lighting until I read the fine print which inferred batteries would need to be replaced twice a week if I kept the LED lighting turned on. Wow, that was an eyeopener. Instead, I opted for the keyboard with a long tail and a USB connector on it to get the back-lighting powered by the computer and real electricity. What I didn't expect was having to replace it sooner than expected. I should have realized after looking at the Logitech product offerings that what they had hadn't been updated with new releases for years. Usually that's an indication the company is getting out of that line of work because they can't compete on pricing and keeping the quality high. So they cut the quality and become just like the competition only worse.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty, but delicate & won't last.
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016

I really liked this keyboard. Loved the fact it was illuminated (and the brightness could be adjusted), and keystrokes were pretty quiet. Unfortunately after less than 2 months some keys started jamming but seemed to resolve themselves if I put a small screwdriver under the key to gently lift it slightly (without taking it completely off) and free it from whatever was holding it down or preventing it from being pressed; now, after about 3 months of owning it, the "enter" key jammed and I attempted to lift it slightly but the entire key snapped off and the thin, plastic clip underneath broke. There's no way to fix it, and it's well past the window to return it.

So what I've found is that I spent $67 for a keyboard that lasted 3 months (and started having issues after only 2). I've owned previous keyboards for years without issues, so I feel this one is a horrible value if its keys start jamming and one can't resolve the issues without breaking the keyboard.
