Not as happy as I would like to be

The gate says it is 36" wide, but even with the extension piece, it's only 30" end to end, with the additional 6 inches being the wall mounts sticking 3 inches out on either end. The problem is that the space I need to close off is 37" wide, and with the wall mounts sticking out ANY further, the gate is not sturdy. While the mounts themselves stay in place against the wall, the other end of the screw--the end that simply SLIDES into the frame of the gate--wobbles back and forth. It fits inside the frame of my door just fine without the extension piece, however it's too tall to be able to close the door with the gate in place. The problem is that I work from home, and so, while I sometimes need the door open for airflow, I also need to keep the pets out. And sometimes, when other people in the house finish with their work and start socializing, I need to be able to close the door to keep down the noise.
If the gate itself were 4" wider, or if the mounts were actually *attached* to the gate instead of just sliding into an open channel, it would be perfect and I could tighten it properly. As it is, I'm looking at having to either mount a piece of wood to the wall (just what I want to do; mount a 2x4 to an interior wall) or buy another gate after having spent more than $40 on this one.
