How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

These aren't your run-of-the-mill lightly salted, whole cashews. These are Planters DELUXE Lightly Salted Whole Cashews. The fancy lettering on the can spelling "Deluxe" goes to show you just how classy these cashews are. I wouldn't allow my manservant to hand feed me anything but the best. THESE are the best!

3.0 out of 5 starsNONE of the 3 TYPES of Planters cashews reviewed below is as good as Costco's cashews.

PLEASE NOTE that I seldom buy Planters cashews, but I do once in a while whenever I need to meet Amazon's $25 free-shipping requirement.
-- Planters cashews are not as crunchy as I like, but they're still somewhat tasty.

Below I review the 3 different TYPES of Planters cashews which I've tried plus the Costco's (40 oz jar) and Aldi's (30 oz jar) cashews which I usually buy MOST of the time (on average, one jar each week).
-- I give each of the 5 products its own rating based on 5 stars (=100%; highly recommended).

PLEASE NOTE that, based on my lifetime experience eating cashews, NONE of the 5 products reviewed is as good as the BEST cashews (5 stars; 100%) which I have ever eaten.
-- Costco's cashews are consistently 4.5 stars out of 5 stars max.
-- Aldi's cashews are consistently 4 stars out of 5 stars max.

3.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to PLANTER'S Quality Control over Cashews?
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022
Verified Purchase
I have ordered and been consuming Planters Whole Cashews (salted, lightly salted, & with sea salt) for several years. I have ALWAYS found that Planter's nuts were historically superior in freshness, quality, & being intact. However in my last couple of shipments (I usually order 2 or 3 cans at a time) I have been disappointed with the quality of the cashews. Several cans contained a multitude of discolored, foul tasting nuts, very hard nuts, looking like they had dark discolored spots and sections of what appeared to be mold or other discolorations never found in wholesome nuts. These of course must be examined before eating and discarded. Also the last few cans of cashews had a vastly increased number of pieces and halves, not the whole nuts that I have come to expect and pay for.

I don't know the reason for this slippage in Planters quality.....perhaps the pandemic contributed to the breakdown of proper inspection and removal of damaged/spoiled nuts before packaging, or perhaps the supply chain backlogs allow the nuts to be stored in a manner that allows spoilage to occur or deteriorates freshness before packaging. In any event I am finding that the quality & freshness of Planters Whole Cashews, a quality that has historically been superior, has significantly deteriorated in my last several containers that I received....all while the price has increased.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly whole cashews, but a lot of fragments
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2022
Verified Purchase
While I agree with all of the positive reviews about the quality of this product, I was disappointed by the amount of cashew fragments. As I use these cashews, the first half of the can contains mostly whole cashews. There are some half cashews, but mostly whole or mostly whole. As I get down to the last 20-30%, there are a lot more half cashews and a lot of smaller fragments. The last 10% or so is pretty much all fragments.

I would estimate that a can is about 70% whole cashews, 20% half cashews, and 10% fragments.

Even though I love these cashews and will continue to buy them, I need to deduct a couple of stars for the misleading name. I think a better name would be “Mostly Whole Cashews”. The picture on the can, showing only whole cashews, is even more misleading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quality has taken a major hit the past six months
Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2021

These cashews were once the best you could get for the money. There were better cashews, but those were more expensive.

Since about September, the quality of the cashews has taken a hit. For whatever reason, whoever is packaging these can't roast them property. Over half of the cashews are seriously over-roasted, and some are outright burned.

UPDATE: The shipment on 4-30-22 was much better, with very few overcooked or burned pieces.

If I happen across these in the future, and the quality returns to what it used to be, I'll edit my rating and review accordingly, but I don't plan on purchasing these again until the quality improves.

Because Amazon won't refund anything after the first can, I've stopped buying these and am going to throw them away. If I find out that the quality has improved, I'll buy them again and will update this review accordingly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not whole but in pieces and stale
Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2021

We have ordered this item 27 times over the past year or so and we love them! Usually they are fresh and the cashews are whole, so typically we recommend them. With this order the cashews tasted stale and were in pieces. So if you get a cannister and they are stale and in pieces, try them again, at least once.

We had a problem with the USPS in our town concerning deliveries and it is possible that our delivery guys shook them to pieces. The cashew cannister was shipped alone in a box via the USPS. Why in the world Amazon uses the USPS I will never know!! Their Prime Delivery is great and of course UPS is good, but not the USPS....

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed

Over 50% were cashew “pieces “, and not even cashew “halves”, let alone whole cashews. And this purchase did not seem as fresh as usual. I’ve bought these numerous times, and have mostly been satisfied, but not this time. I’ve also bought them several times at a local retailer, with much better luck, and at a comparable price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many bits and pieces
Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022

I have been buying these for a long time, but in the last year the quality has gone down a lot. They are now mechanically adding a bunch of bits and pieces into the middle of the can, surrounded by whole cashews. My last order I dumped out a can and separated the whole cashews, the halves and pieces amounted to almost 1/3 of the can. I am going to actively start searching out other brands.

3.0 out of 5 stars They are not all whole cashews

Although the package says whole cashews, there are quite a bit of pieces of cashews in the container. They are good and they are fresh but unless they got broken up in shipping, the label can be misleading. I have ordered them twice and it was the same on both shipments. Will add photo.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of pieces
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2019

I had this sent to my mother a couple weeks ago. I specifically asked how many whole cashews were in the can. After finishing the can, she emailed me and said probably about half or a bit more were whole cashews. They were fresh and tasted good but too many pieces for me to trust buying online again. I will take my business to the local store where you can see what you are buying first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deluxe? Whole? Hmm....

Look, in general, nuts are nuts...

These Planters Cashews taste just as you'd expect them to.
I won't buy them again, because they're not as "Deluxe" and as "Whole" as I'd like them to be.

When I buy Cashews in particular, I like them WHOLE (or at least halves).
I've now been through 2 jars of these and it's just a cr@p shoot.
Some whole, some halves, LOTS of bits and pieces...

If they'd rename it to "Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Bits and Pieces of Cashews", then it would be honestly named.

If you're really looking for DELUXE and WHOLE Cashews, Costco is the one to beat!
