5.0 out of 5 starsNothing "sour" about this stuff!

I've been purchasing citric acid for nearly two years to use in my dishwasher (it counteracts hardwater effects both on the dishes and in the machine, as well as keeps my dishwasher fresh). Though, we have used it on occasion for food 'stuffs' - add a bit of pizzazz to this or that, helps keep fruits and veggies fresh after cut or washed, even great when made into gummy form for my daughter with kidney stones! No matter how or how often its used, Milliard brand is a consistent fine powder. I've tried several different brands, initially thinking they were all the same - they were not. Milliard stands out and is my favorite! I absolutely recommend this product and will be purchasing it again - and again, and again, and again, and...

word of warning to anyone whose never worked with citric acid before: STAND BACK, POUR SLOWLY, and DO NOT INHALE while pouring as this type of product creates a "dust cloud". Inhaling citric acid, no matter what brand, can and will result in very irritated airways.

SO disappointed. And actually SO sad. This was for our daughter’s bath bomb project. Package was leaking from a hole in it, and citric acid everywhere! On our door mat, kitchen floor and obviously the box.
Package is not returnable or refundable. Our bad. We know what kinds of things NOT to order from Amazon👎👎
And.... 1 Star has to be given. Otherwise, review would not be posted. So another 👎👎

5.0 out of 5 stars How could this happen?
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2015
Size: 2 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I have been searching for a cleaner to get the hard water white scale off our shower doors and shower heads for more years than I care to admit. From CLR, to the green stuff, to Kaboom and vinegar, even barkeepers, I tried everything that promised to remove it. Some worked a little (barkeepers) but most didn't work at all.

I saw this citric acid in a review of some other product that the reviewer said did not work. The reviewer said to skip the other product and try this. She called it a "miracle cleaner". OK, I was up for a miracle at this point. I figured it was worth a try. If it didn't work I could always use it to make sourdough bread. It's other name is "sour salt" when used in cooking.

I diluted the powder 2 TB per 4 cups warm water as suggested. I poured it into a clean spray bottle. I sprayed the shower door. The white scale melted before my eyes. And I mean MELTED off the door. I rinsed the door with a 2 liter spray bottle (Hudson brand sold on Amazon) and the door was like new! No scrubbing, no nothing. How could this product have escaped my notice all these years?

I googled citric acid and saw the many other uses for this product from cleaning the coffee pot, to cleaning tile and windows. The dirty grout in my kitchen...clean! The apple slices got soaked in a light solution before dehydrating.(Cheaper than lemon juice). Anything vinegar or lemon juice can do, this can do better. Enough said.

This is exactly the same as "sour salt" in the small container. I bought this because I am never going to get a decent sourdough starter going. I've tried for several years: the hundreds of different techniques on hundreds of bread websites, the "Alaska dehydrated starter" that I ordered all the way from Utah, the "fresh starter" from some folks that said it was over 100 years old and used on the Oregon Trail no less.

Well, it was time for plan Z (the cheaters way). Add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp per dough recipe (about 3 cups flour) and add an extra tablespoon of yeast and you've got sourdough bread! The first time I used it, I didn't add extra yeast. I guess this salt inhibits yeast action. (same thing happened when I tried to make sourdough bread by adding vinegar.)

The second time I used it to make rye bread, I added the extra yeast and it turned out perfectly. I have also used it for sweet and sour sauce. Vinegar is still my other sour ingredient in the sauce, but this adds a real kick. Lots of my grandma's "old country Russia" recipies use this sour salt. Cabbage and meatball recipe and many soups. Look on line for great "old country" recipies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why have I never known about the uses of citric acid?
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019
Size: 10 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
With 10+ years of using natural cleaning products, why have I never known about this? My first citric acid purchase was after researching how to get residue from forming on dishes in the dishwasher (after trying so many other things, of course). I purchased a small container at a grocery store. I ran a cycle through the dishwasher and ended up wiping out so much scum after the wash! It worked! I then found so many other possible uses online and ordered this large bag. I had moved into a home with textured glass shower doors that I could never seem to get clean. I bought a spinbrush, which didn't put a dent in it. I scrubbed and scrubbed and even used the types of cleaners that I prefer to stay away from. I had my husband take the shower doors off so that I could take them outside and power wash them! Still soap scum!!! I seriously gave up because I know I'm going to replace them but the citric acid worked! I've even made a face toner from this stuff and it really does tighten pores immediately. I'm also using it in the washing machine. I'm finding new uses for it every day and can't believe it took me so long to discover this amazing product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective kettle descaler and dishwasher cleaner
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2017
Size: 2 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
This product is 100% citric acid. I purchased this to descale my electric hot water kettle and for use as a dishwasher cleaner. It does both jobs very effectively and has several advantages versus the other alternative most people use, which is vinegar. I will detail these below.

A citric acid solution, at the same normality, is more acidic than vinegar which makes it a more effective descaler. It can also be stored more compactly than a bottle of vinegar and is readily made into solution when needed. For use as a kettle descaler, I added 4 tsp (about 19 grams, 0.1 mole) to 1 liter of water, boiled it in the kettle and let it sit for 15 minutes. It completely dissolved a year's worth of mineral deposits. I then soaked the aerator of my kitchen faucet (which was partially blocked) in a small quantity of this hot acidic solution. It cleared it up very effectively, something which repeated overnight soakings in vinegar had failed to do. Aside from the effectiveness, another advantage is that, unlike vinegar, it has no odor and the kettle is more easily rinsed free of the acid after descaling. Needless to say, it is much more cost effective than buying a dedicated descaler, which is most likely citric acid, but with some snazzy brand name so they can charge a hefty premium for it.

It works very well as a dishwasher cleaner. An advantage it has versus vinegar for this application is that you can simply put a quantity (I use 2 tbsp) in the dispenser and start the wash. It will automatically get used during the main wash cycle which is when the dispenser door opens. Being the longest cycle of the wash, it is the most effective way of using a cleaner. To get the same effect with vinegar, you have to start the dishwasher, wait for the pre-wash cycle to complete, open the door and pour in the vinegar. This works, but is obviously less convenient.

This particular product itself is well packaged. I like the fact that it is resealable, which means I do not have to find a separate container for it. The granules flowed freely with minimal clumping. The two pound bag is a good size for my needs and should last me more than a year. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cleaning the shower, and basically it's lemon juice's active ingredient
Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2018
Size: 2 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I moved into an apartment and the owner said there's a little rust in the water and said I should use some shower spray that would prevent rust stains in the shower, otherwise it would be really hard to clean later.

I did some research. I decided to buy this citric acid and dissolve it in water, to spray the shower stall with. I use 1/4 cup of citric acid to 3 cups of water. Just citric acid and water. It dissolves easily, and you can use hot water if you want it to dissolve faster. It not only has kept rust stains away--I give about a dozen squirts with this each time after I take a shower, and there is no other cleaning needed ever. Everything is sparkling clean and it stays that way without any scrubbing at all for any part of the shower. It rocks.

This will last me more than a year, maybe 2, for the shower-cleaning use. I definitely recommend using it like I have. You can probably get citric acid for cheaper but the cost is almost nothing for how long it lasts. You could spend a lot more on products that contain toxic ingredients such as bleach and I would not recommend that. Citric acid is what's in lemon juice that makes it such a good cleaner, and for easy shower maintenance this is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Raw Material For Cost Conscious Home Owners with Hard Water
Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2016
Size: 10 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
We use this citric acid in three ways in our home and it works great. We have hard water and all three uses help limit the nuisance of hard water residue.

First, we use it in our dishwasher as a direct substitute for Lemi-Shine. It works just as well to prevent spotting of dishes from hard water at 1/4 the cost. Use it in the same quantity as Lemi-Shine.

Our second use is as a spray for ceramic tile in the shower to prevent hard water residue in the shower. For this use, we mix 2 TBSP of citric acid in 1 quart of plain white vinegar and spray lightly on tile and grout after showering. It works amazingly well to neutralize the hard water alkalinity and prevent build up of hard water residue. Only very infrequently now do I have to scrub grout lines with a stuff brush to remove hard water buildup on grout lines. Much less expensive than shower sprays you buy in the grocery store for the same purpose. But it is a little strong smelling (though not a bad smell) in case you have a sensitive nose. It smells rather like a mix of vinegar and vitamin C tablets. For this application it might work just as well diluted a little with some distilled water, but I've never tried it.

Our third use is for the same citric acid and vinegar mix described above - but for the periodic cleaning ceramic tile grout lines. Spray the solution generously on grout lines, let sit for several minutes, then scrub with a grout brush. It still isn't a super easy job, but it works very well to soften and remove hard water stains from grout. It is low cost and more effective than most grocery store cleaners. For a grout brush, I really like the "Groom Mini Shark Grout Cleaning Brush" also sold here on Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used to Remove Stains from Georgia Salt Water Pool
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2018
Size: 10 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
During the course of the year, our pool plaster gets stains from wooden tables sitting on the shelf and metal toys left on the bottom of the pool and the occasional blue algae killer poured onto the shelf. We use citric acid to remove those stains.

I dumped the whole 10 lb sack into our 40,000 gallon pool focusing on stains. I could have started off with half that amount and waited to observe the results but this is the 9th year we have done this and I always end up adding the additional amount.

I do this treatment once a year in February right before the temperature starts rising so that there is no chlorine in the water and the ph is 7.2 or higher. The chlorine won't hurt the process but it destroys the citric acid. You want the ph high because the citric acid is going to drop the ph way down. We turned the filter off for 24 hours but you don't have to. I avoid rainy days so as not to dilute the water.

After two days we start adding bleach (from the bottle) to gradually bring up the chlorine level. Once we have the chlorine up to an acceptable level, we start adding salt back in. When the chlorinator registers adequate salt, we turn the chlorinator on and gradually start increasing it. All of this is done when water temperatures are 60 degrees or higher. I've got notes to add 2 quarts of Metal Free by Natural Chemistry after a couple of days but I never do. Our pool never requires anything to raise ph level as it does that on it's own. My notes also say to not use shock for two weeks

The process returns most of the plaster to a sparkling white but it couldn't reach the rust stains at the bottom of the deep end to completely remove them.

Addendum: The chlorine level in my pool dropped after a week of heavy rains and I got spots of algae on the bottom. I sprinkled
Clorox Control Bleach Crystals, Regular, 24 Ounce Bottle  over all of the spots. The crystals sank to the bottom and took a while to dissolve, killing the algae in hours. I won't give up the citrix acid in the spring but I'm going to use the chlorox crystals during the rest of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for dishwasher build up!!

I was ready to replace my Bosch dishwasher because my hard water and all natural dishwasher soap I was causing it to crust so badly with white stuff that water wasn’t draining efficiently anymore and dishes were not getting cleaned with all the water holes clogged. Replaced filter. Tried to clean out the drain. Even tried CLR and it helped a bit but not enough. Not to mention I didn’t want to keep using harsh chemicals. Then I came to find this through some post and it’s cheap and all natural. Was my final try. OMG. I did not expect it to work so well. I dumped a bunch in and ran just the rinse cycle. Woah. Huge difference. Sides of washer actually sparkles. Did another cycle of it. And my washer drains again. After a week of regular loads, I gave it another rinse cycle with it just to maintain. So easy. Will keep doing it every other week from now on so it never gets that bad again.

I bought this to doctor up some marshmallow fondant we made that tasted like circus peanuts. It's like the coating on Sour Patch Kids x10. If you eat it raw you immediately want to vomit but you're puckering so hard from the sour that you can't. Good times!

We've found all sorts of uses for it since we have 1.9 lbs left over. It can be used to eat coffee stains off mugs and pots. It did wonders at cleaning out the stains in our sink. We used it in place of lemon making Paneer and it worked AMAZINGLY WELL. Dissolve some in water and use a cotton swap to clean that white crusty crap off battery terminals.

We keep finding uses for it. Good stuff.
