5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing but not for everyday heavy use.
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2017
This cable failed at the one year mark, so why am I giving it 5 stars? I used this cable as my everyday cell phone charging cable, which should tell you that it took a lot of flexing and bending. As an engineering student, I was curious about what was inside. After the failure I performed a teardown to find the point of failure and determine how well the cable was made. Overall this cable was engineered ridiculously well. The point of failure was the negative power wire and it was due to excessive flexing. The heavy gauge tinned copper wire was 7-strand. I think a more finely stranded wire for the power wires would have increased its life. Everything was heavily shielded and all wire was stranded tinned copper. The power wires were a very large gauge (no smaller than 21g). All data lines were twisted pair in individually shielded pairs with a stranded line for reinforcement. The terminals had shielded covers that were soldered to the shielding braid from the cable. I could go on.
The point I'm trying to make is these are wonderful cables for a professional environment that should last forever providing there is minimal flexing in its daily use.

1.0 out of 5 starsWhere's the quality control?
Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019
It is not often I have to express my disappointment with a product I buy on Amazon; and it's even less often that I have to ding an Amazon Basics product. But here it is: these cables are junk. I cannot recommend them. I would give them 0 stars if I could.

Here's why: when my cable arrived, it would not work on a USB 3.0 port. I tried two different ports, but it did not matter: my computer would not recognize my portable hard drive. Since the drive worked perfectly with the cable that came with it, I knew the problem was with the Amazon Basics cable, and not the drive or the USB ports on my computer.

Oddly enough, the cable did work in a USB 2.0 port. But if I had wanted to buy a USB 2.0 cable, I would not have ordered this one.

Anyway, I contacted Amazon Customer Service, and, to their credit, they promptly shipped me a new cable, at no cost to me. Big thanks to them for addressing my problem so quickly.

Unfortunately, the replacement cable performed even worse than the first one: it would not work in either a USB 3.0 port or in USB 2.0 port. This buying experience was a complete waste of my time.

I then did what I should have done in the first place: I ordered three Monoprice Select Series USB 3.0 cables and each one of them worked perfectly.

To sum this sad story up: it is not worth your time to buy this product, at least not until Amazon address their quality control issues. Note to Amazon: I still have both cables, and will be happy to ship them back to you for failure analysis.

I have a 2TB WD My Passport Ultra external HDD which kept disconnecting on Windows 10. I tested the external HDD on Win8 and Win7 machines, still kept disconnecting. Luckily, I read on some websites that usually when an external HDD keeps disconnecting it's usually the cable that's not good enough. In my case, this happened to be true, the cable that came with my external HDD is TOO cheap and UNRELIABLE. I decided to try this cable and it worked. I don't care that it's too thick. It cheap, well made, and works, period. Hope I helped. Shame on you WESTERN DIGITAL, giving your customers crappy cables.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first AmazonBasics USB cable I've tested that was any good.

Originally I thought the quality of this cable was great. It seemed nice and beefy and it felt like it was well made. Then I bought a USB cable tester. I plugged the tester into my Antec 2.1A charger, then tried various cables with my Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, a large and very power hungry tablet. First I tried the Samsung branded cables that came with the tablet and with my phone. They registered 1.7 to 1.8 Amps. Close enough.

I tested several other AmazonBasics cables, a 9-foot USB 3 and two 3-foot USB 2 cables, and they were utter garbage, reading just 0.8 and 0.4 Amps. I was expecting this 3-foot USB 3 cable to be just as bad as the others.

I plugged it in to the tester and the tablet, and checked the reading. 1.50 Amps! Hey, this cable is actually decent! I'm pleasantly surprised!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finnally a real USB 3.0 cable that delivers the speed that is supposed to. Not very soft or portable but it does the real job.
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018

I have a Samsung NX1 camera and to transfer using all its speed, I have to use a USB3.0cable. It was not provided with the camera. Instead a standard USB2.0 did the job but I have been trying to find a "real" 3.0 cable since long time. I have bought so many cables and none were genuine 3.0. They did connected, transfer data and charged the camera but not at the max speed that this camera is capable.
Most were cables labeled "Samsung" very well made, soft silicone, and with the blue color on the plug that states for USB3.0 capability and the extended plug size. However the internal pins on the standard USB end (towards the PC), were incomplete without the few extras that were added for the 3.0. Most cables were fake 3.0, delivering at most just as a standard 2.0.
Until...this amazon cable. Wow... this cable is longer, way thicker, not at all something soft or made of silicone. This is like a truck of a cable.
But this cable delivers the standards of a true USB3.0. This is crazy how the NX1 is just transferring many large videos in no time at all. And the Studio feature works instantly. The cable is not very comfortable for transport, but it does delivers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cable, great buy.. but not for small, lightweight items.
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2017

It is a solid, thick cable. Appears to be sturdy and well built.

I give it 5 stars but with a note of caution as to how it will be used:

I bought it to use on my portable 2.5 inch external drive. The cable itself, plugged in to the drive, is heavy.. much heavier and stiffer than normal cables. It seems to be "pulling" down from the connector due to the weight of the cable and putting some stress forces on the driver's connector. So I would say this cable is probably BEST used for permanent installations of larger, heavier items. Also, regarding small, portable hard drives, the cable is so thick if you bump it, it will transfer the movement to the drive.. If it's on a desk, near the edge, it could fall off. A limp cable would be less -likely to do that. So that is why I suggest this cable for more permanent installations.. Like a heavy NAS or a full sized 3.5 inch external drive. But not for 2.5 drives that are designed to be very lightweight.

That being said, I have no regrets on buying this cable. I may not continue to use it on my little lightweight MiniStation 2.5 inch HDD, but I'll find something for it to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with Stratus 2
Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020

Very sturdy cable. Most importantly for me it is a great fitting cable for Stratus 2. I was having trouble finding a charging cable that works for charging a Stratus 2 (that was a hand me down gift). Some people have luck with using a micro USB cable but I found it was too loose fitting to change. This cable fits very securely and charges great. As a tip if this cable fits well but your still having trouble charging your Stratus 2, it may be because your power adapter isn't compatible. The stratus 2 uses an android USB but uses apple's charging protocol so try switching power adapter to an Apple one or another brand with the proper protocol like anchor. As a side note my new Samsung power adapter seems to be compatible also with this cable and the Stratus 2

I bought this to replace the rather flimsy cord that came with my Seagate external drive. Definitely a step up in quality. The plug end that attaches to the drive itself fits very snugly in the drive receptacle, much better than the originally supplied one, which always fit very loosely and easily inadvertently disconnected. Worth the money for the upgrade.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good honest USB 3.0 wire - Highly recommended.

And twice as long as most.

You can tell this wire from the older 2.0 wires because its twice as thick.

I use these for Seagate,Toshiba and Samsung...

If your cable matches the picture it will work.

My old cable was going bad and it was not detecting properly and it was either taking flat out too long or telling me to format the drive... Do NOT do that.

This cable is better shielded than the cables that come originally with the externals. The cable feels good and plug and play picked it right up. Xfer speed is about what I expected but that will vary from drive to drive. This cable to fully backward compatible with older USB 2.0 externals and a great price,

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect replacement cable

I purchased the cable to replace a client's lost portable hard drive cable.

The length was perfect - not overly long but just enough to run from the top of the computer case where the portable drive resided to the USB 3.0 port on the back of the computer.

And, unlike some cables I've seen, this one is thick and sturdy. It should prove quite durable.

4.0 out of 5 stars No complaints
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2017

I ordered this cable because I couldn't tell for the life of me which of the supposed legit Samsung chargers weren't fake, because every single one had reviews saying they were fake and others saying they weren't, on the same product. Since I already had 2 ac adapters I certainly didn't need any more of those anyway. So when I saw the amazon brand version, I leaped at it because I trust them and figured returns wouldn't be a problem at least, if it sucked.

It is a bit thick and less pliable than Samsung's, but that's just a bonus for me because the reason I had gone through 2 chargers previously was because my cat likes to chew them. My last one had also got so loose that it would fall right out of my phone if I even looked at it wrong, and I often had to wiggle it to get it to maintain the connection. This one is in there nice and firm, so far I have no complaints. It's longer too, but I like that. I have a Galaxy S5, if it helps.
