5.0 out of 5 starsA Superior Lavender-Scented Pee Pad
Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2015
Through trial and error, I found this Hartz Home Protection brand pads, and I love them. This brand differs from even the better brands because they turn the urine into a gel, making them last longer (usually 3 pees for my pups) and clean up A LOT easier. Myself and my two, 15-year-old Maltese, Romeo & Juliet, are no strangers to puppy pee pads, and typically go through about one per day. Romeo is on diuretic medicine, and when he urinates, A LOT of liquid needs to be absorbed. We went through several cheap brands, only to learn that they can leak terribly, leaving a nasty mess to clean, and essentially rendering them useless. We are very happy with this brand, for the following reasons:

Absorbency/Leak Proof
Compared to every other brand we have tried, these have the least amount of leakage. Occasionally, there is some urine runoff from the sides of the pad, but I believe this is because Romeo, my male dog, has bad aim. If the dogs urinate in the center of the pad, there are VERY rarely any leaks from this brand.

For the purposes of testing and reviewing, I poured water on this pad and another brand, The Buddy Pad. With The Buddy Pad Brand, the material didn’t seem to expand to retain the water, but spread out the water much like a paper towel would. While the water never leaked through the bottom, but it did eventually spread to the sides and spill over. This Hartz Brand clearly absorbed more water, and it could noticeably be seen and felt that the water was turning to gel. The gel prevented the water from leaking through the bottom layer, and even visibly stopped the water from spreading out past the side edges.

Odor Protection/Scent
I have purchased both the regular variety and the lavender scented variety of this Hartz Pad. Prior to use, the regular variety has no scent, and the lavender version smells fresh and lavender scented. However, this and every brand we have ever used, still smells like pee after they have been peed on.

Material
The description indicates 5 layers. I cut one open and included the picture. At first glance, only 3 layers can be seen, but if you look very closely, you can tell that the inside layer is comprised of 3. The top layer is thin and fibrous and pretty tear resistant. The 3 inside layers are cotton-like. The bottom layer is thin and plastic-like, and water resistant. In the Lavender scented version, this bottom layer is a cute purple color (as pictured), and the regular variety is a soft, light green color.

For comparison, The Buddy Pad Brand is also made of 5 similar layers, though that brand is quilted (see photo- though this doesn’t seem to make any difference).

Size
This brand is slightly smaller than The Buddy Pad Brand, 21”X21” compared to 22”X22”. However, I believe the actual padding part is the same size, and it is just the outer edge lining that is larger in that other brand (see photo).

Price
These are currently on sale on Amazon for $12.72 for 50 pads, which is much more affordable than the $25 for the same 50ct of The Buddy Pad Brand. While there are many less expensive brands available (I’ve seen some as low as $0.10 per pad), in our experience, these are the highest quality available, and are truly an excellent value. (Especially considering these Hartz brand pads usually last through 3 pees, while others need to be changed after 1 or 2.)

Packaging
These pads are packaged folded thin for convenience. Also, not that it really requires much direction, but these do have instructions, suggestions, and product and contact info printed on the back of the package.

Pros:
++ Turns Urine Into Gel!
+ No Center Leak-Through
+ Minimal Side-Leakage (Comparatively)
+ 5 Absorbent/Leak Resistant Layers
+ Packaged Thinly Folded
+ Detailed Info Printed on Package
+ Great Cost Value
+ Lavendar-Scented & Pretty Purple Color

Cons:
- None of Significance to Report at This Time

1.0 out of 5 stars" It sounded like it was just what I need
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2018
My baby, Pippa, is 10 a week old chi-weenie and weights 1.6 pounds. I bought these because the advertising says "Liquid instantly turns to gel with our Flash-Dry technology, locking in moisture to prevent leaks and odors. WON’T LEAK OR SPREAD: In addition to our Flash-Dry technology, the plastic backing and border on each pad helps protect all floor types by blocking leaks at the corners. IDEAL FOR PUPPY TRAINING."

It sounded like it was just what I need. I'm not sure what made them think it is non leak. When I picked the pad up it was wet underneath so I thought maybe Lulu, our older dog. had used the pad or maybe Pippa had missed the pad. We decided that we needed to keep an eye on it. She's close to the edge but doesn't miss it. Check the pad and it is wet underneath. We know she didn't miss because we watched her. I'm on my second package but I won't order these again. It sounded so good I thought it was worth a try.

Best thing ever since sliced bread for my aging, incontinent, little shelter dog, no one wanted. He would have been at the shelter forever a s I can keep him for the rest of his natural life thanks to Hartz. Eight years old Pom mix adopted and found incontinent when I brought home and by then was in love with.. Tried every kind of pad from specialty stores to grocery store, until I found these. Perfect. Quick drying, wonderful lavender scent. Will not leak thru like every other pad I tried. Was so easy to train my dog to use these instead of rug or floor. Something in the product attracts canine to do their business on the pad. I simply showed my little rescue companion his pad and let him smell it. No further training. Also, I am very crippled. Sometimes I can't keep up with the old dog's needs, so the pads have solved a multitude of issues. Also, without these pads I would never be able to keep my tiny little friend safe from frostbite in sub zero weather conditions when his miniscule paws cannot tolerate the frigid ice and snow. Thank you Hartz. I am so greatful for all your research and development into producing such a quality product that solves so many canine needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars WORK GREAT/TOTAL RIPOFF PRICE SINCE COVID/TAKING ADVANTAGE

I love these. Bought the box of 50 in January 2020 for $4.72.
Today they are $12.72.
ENOUGH RIPPING OFF THE PUBLIC HELD HOSTAGE BY RIDICULOUS PRICING and SEVERE SHORTAGES. The $1200 was given to us TO PAY ALL THE RIDICULOUS PRICES from businesses that have been given MILLIONS OF DOLLARS so they DON'T GO UNDER. There is something VERY VERY wrong with this picture.
Signed,
A Concerned citizen that is also pay $1,700 a month RENT for a basic 1,000 SF apartment, which equals to 40% of my monthly take home pay. I can't save for a HOUSE because of the RENT & other RIDICULOUS COSTS I am forced to pay for the basics of American Life
. I pay $160 a month FOR BASIC CABLE and INTERNET COMBINED, LITERALLY no premium channels, AND I NEVER WATCH TV, but I need the internet. And it's the ONLY game in town. I pay $150 a month for AUTO INSURANCE for a car I drive 20 miles A WEEK. I pay $550 a month FOR MEDICAL INSURANCE with a $2,000 deductible & that covers zero MEDICATION
***AND I NEVER USE MY MEDICAL INSURANCE***. I've paid $18,000+ for medical insurance in 3 years, and I HAVEN'T BEEN TO THE DOCTOR in 3 years. I pay $150 a month for 3 "maintenance meds" (like thyroid), because insurance doesn't cover. So I pay ALL the same prices as a FAMILY OF 4 would pay (yet got a much lower STIMULUS AMOUNT). There is something very, very wrong with this picture too. HOUSING prices in AMERICA? Well as a single person in my 50s, with ZERO consumer debt and a healthy income of $80,000 a year (TAXABLE of course, and the remainder of that money is then spent AND TAXED again), **
**I WILL NEVER OWN A HOME****. It is ALL I can do to fork over money in rent & utilities & medical costs & oh yes, food which has gone thru the roof, all to make OTHER PEOPLE RICH. Interest rates have been low, but WHO CAN SAVE? AND I AM FORTUNATE in that many people I know work TWO and THREE jobs for the same BASICS I have......
So while this review started as a commentary on inflated prices for Dog Pee Pads, it's turned into something I SURE HOPE A POLITICIAN GETS A GANDER AT........because our Country is all Smoke and Mirrors right now.....

I have a Dorkie puppy.
I work from home on the second floor, so she can't always go outside.

She took to these more than the AKC ones I first bought. They hold the pee well. She uses them about 5 times before I throw it out. It mainly depends on how big her pee spots are though. If she feels it's too full, sometimes she won't use it.lol

The lavender scent- you can't really smell it. I smell it more so when I flap it out to open it all the way before laying it down. And as for the odor eliminating part- I don't feel like that part works well.

This is the 3rd time I've bought these. The first two packs were 50 count, so I went ahead and bought the 100 count.

I have a cat, that for the life of me, and for reasons that are wholly his own, refuses to use the litter box unless it's sparkling clean; I'm talking fresh litter and a scrubbed out box. I don't know if it's him being a Pica kitty (cats who like to chew or eat non-food items), but I've been fighting with him about this for over a year. I kept finding new places that he found to use as his private potty, cardboard boxes were a favorite, empty or not. It was only recently, after our move into an apt, that I finally understood this little quirk. What I had attributed to occasional upset or stress over his adoption and our moving was really an aversion to a "dirty" box, though he will poo in it, go figure.

After cleaning up yet another mess, this was getting old, I finally eradicated the smell (Rocco and Roxie enzyme cleaner works wonders). I didn't want to undo my hard work so I put one of the pee pads that I use in the cat box (Tidy cat Breeze pellet system. A godsend for those with disabilities since taking care of a traditional litter box can be hard) along the wall where he frequently likes to go. He did his business on it and then crumpled it by trying to bury it, tearing the plastic so it can't be used in the litter box system. He only peed a little and there was a whole other end to this pad that could be used. Did he use it? Noooope, true to his nature, he can only use it once and needs a clean one for every time. So I've got a few strategically placed to lessen the chance that he'll go on the carpet.

So began my search for pads that were fairly inexpensive and large quantity. I found these and thought $5! What a steal! So I ordered three, in case the price changed. They arrived on time and discover that there were a bonus of two more pads per pack.

I put them out on all the usual places and they work fine for my overly picky feline. He hasn't been able to put any holes in the back lining. And despite their size he still only uses one at a time

I've read where some ppl complain about the smell. Well, to me, it's a light lavender scent. I'm sensitive to perfumes and cleaners and I don't really smell them. They are thin, very thin. You look at them and think "how can this possibly stop urine, much less catch it.". Well it seems to work. Now mind you I'm only using these for a single cat. So I imagine that the urine load is a bit less than what an average dog puts out. I did notice what seemed to be bare spots in some of the pads, where the inner material does not fully cover the area of the pad, see pictures. They also seem to have a rather large side wall and if I'm not careful in placement he will pee on the edge and it will slide off and onto the carpet.

These aren't bad and so far have suited my needs so I would buy again.

The 2nd time I purchased these, both packages had defective pads. About 80% of the pads were missing more than half of the “absorbent”
Inner layer. Several pads had 1/4 of the lining sticking out through the side of the pad - it was like a cotton batting- these were such poor quality unlike the other Hartz pads I had delivered from
amazon in the past- I was concerned that this was a counterfeit product. I am the director of a 501(c)3 nonprofit senior and special needs rescue, and was severely disappointed when Amazon would not refund me outright without mailing both opened packages back. I purchase a couple of thousand dollars of supplies though my Amazon Smile account; These should have been comped and Amazon should investigate because I sincerely believe that these were not manufactured by Hartz. (BTW I have never had a problem
with the XXL size.)

I bought these exact pee pads at my local Walmart and they smell like lavender when you open the box. these are odorless although the package says lavender sent. It’s nice to be lied too. Too much trouble to send back but never ordering from this doop again. Wish I could give it a 0000000

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Pee Pads I have ever tried

I normally use the Glad pee pads for my adult pee pad trained pug but wanted to try something different just because these were lavender scented and on sale at the time. I have used just about every type of pee pad brand over the years from amazon brand, wee wee pads, Cvs brand, Just about every store off brand, etc to expensive stella brand and never have I come across a pee pad this horrible! Honestly I don't even know where to start on how bad they are as there is literally nothing redeeming about these at all except the nice smell. The rip from just being walked across, the layers separate and tear for no reason. They don’t seem to be able to absorb even the tiniest amount of pee and the edges have no sort of leak guard and due to the separation of the layers the pee seems to just flow off the side... additionally they do not turn the liquid into gel like most pee pads so even pee in the very center of the pad tends to end up running off the sides...
I have no idea how anyone could rate this 5 stars unless the design has changed radically. I never thought I would come across pee pads worse than the Cvs generic brand ones but these are... I am truly shocked that Hartz would make something THIS awful and useless. My female pug is trained on pee pads and pees right in the center 99% of the time, she doesn’t chew on or play with her pee pads nor does she pee large amounts so the fact that these pee pads end up with pee running off the sides onto the floor is truly ridiculous. I definitely will not be using the rest of them and I almost feel bad Donating them to the ASPCA they are THAT awful!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ugh. I wanted to love them

We just rescued /adopted a 8 week old boxer/pit bull puppy 🐶 we are so excited! I bought these because of the convenience and fast shipping! We used them all, they did the job “I guess” — my only issue is she is such a baby and even with her little bit of pee it still have the hardwood floor a slightly “just damp” look and feel! Gross. And if she peed at the corner it would slide right off , most buzzard thing like it was a water repellent mat...... the price is decent the size is the standard regular size.
FYI*** when you open them dont SHAKE OUT - it will bunch up the material inside to one side , is plain as day to see then the pre doesn’t absorb at all! We went on chewy dot com and went with another brand saved a ton of money with way more pads, I rec. going there for puppy training pads!
