5.0 out of 5 starsBest natural detergent I have tried...and I have tried many!
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2018
I've tried, Charlie's, Allens, Norwex UPP and many other natural laundry detergents and have settled on this one--once and for all. Has absolutely no scent and my laundry comes out smelling like nothing (which is what clean laundry should smell like)! It works great and doesn't fade my darks like Charlie's did. Have used on cloth diapers as well and loved it. I also keep a little jar of it under my sink to soak dirty sponges and dish cloths (like my norwex kitchen cloths) and it works great for that as well.

1.0 out of 5 starsDisappointing
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2020
We have been using Nellie's Laundry Soda for a month. I first noticed that is doesn't create any suds, which I attributed to its lack of chemicals. I then noticed that my kids clothes didn't smell really fresh when pulled out of the dryer, I again attributed that to a lack of chemical agents. The final issue was when my partner laundered a t-shirt that he had been wearing while working in the yard. He pulled it out of the dryer and it was still dirty. It's too late for me to return this for a refund but hopefully, it saves someone money. I am very disappointed, I really wanted an alternative to our standard detergent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best detergent I've ever used

I sweat. Like, I sweat a lot. I do a very physical job so sometimes it can be a little bit ridiculous. I needed something to clear the funk out of my clothes but I also wanted something that was easier on the environment than the big plastic containers I've been recycling. Add on top of everything that I have incredibly sensitive skin and the fact taht everything breaks me out and I'm a bit of a challenge. My clothes smell good, I have cool little tins in my tool area holding screws and nails and fasteners and I'm not sending plastic to the landfill for my laundry needs. This stuff leaves my clothes clean, soft, smelling fresh and no deodorant stains or leftover bra funk (you know what I'm talking about ladies). Oh! and the bonus is that my washer had started getting a funky smell and this completely eliminated that problem. Even the washing machine smells better.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I bought this

So glad I bought this, now I can’t live without it. I was having a hard time removing the smell of pee off of my not-quite-potty-trained-yet toddler’s clothes no matter how many times I would wash them. Of course, no heavy scent was fooling my pregnancy sense of smell. I came across Nellies washing soda by chance and after reading all the reviews I decided to give it a try. It worked wonders, the smell of pee went away with no masking scents! I also finally won the battle against gym clothes smells. I also started using wool dryer balls and I add a few drops of lavender E.O. And Im laundry heaven!

I recommend doing a few self cleaning cycles on the washing machine for better results. The first time I washed clothes with nellies washing soda it was a huge improvement from my regular laundry detergent but once I got the machine properly cleaned and removed all the old detergent buildup it worked even better. I was surprised at how much build up there was, I had to run 4 self cleaning cycles before it stopped sudsing up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where do I begin with this powdered magic?!.....
Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020

So, here's the backstory. I've been using the same deliciously scented Purex Baby detergent for 9 years, and they recently changed the formulation. It lost it's soft and subtle smell and it makes me itch. I was really REALLY sad about this, as it's what I've washed 3 of the 5 of my boy's baby clothes in - I had a nostalgic attachment to it. But I digress. With a change of formula came a need for me to find a new detergent for myself and my 18 month old who suffers from eczema. I've tried free and clear, but if clothes have any funky smell it doesn't get it out. If they are left in the washer longer than a couple hours after the cycle ends in our humid climate, they smell rank. Also, we are moving to Africa soon and can't crate any liquid detergents or pods. So, my first stop was to look on Amazon for powdered "free and clear" type detergent. This is one of the first that popped up, and while I wasn't thrilled with the price, I did love the reviews.
I'm not sure how they've done it, but they have DONE IT!
This stuff is unbelievable! My clothing, while not smelling like anything in particular (I still miss the scent of the old Purex Baby Detergent! ) smell incredibly fresh. I've put some seriously nasty clothes in that washer with just a scoop of this stuff and out they come smelling so fresh and so clean clean.
Here's the kicker - 2 of my 5 still wet the bed occasionally at night. You want nasty smelling laundry? Try finding a wadded up pee and pants sheet on the ground three days after they were wet on - it's nauseating. I threw that in the washer and looked down at it for a bit, contemplating wether to pile more laundry on top of it or wash it alone, as I usually do - with highly scented cheap detergent, "Funk out" laundry deodorizer AND laundry disinfectant. I decided it was time to put this magical powder to the test - I put in a full load (which is a BIG load for our massive washer) and put two scoops of this stuff in there. When the cycle was done, I wasn't able to get to it right away, so it sat for a couple hours, which if you remember is a recipe or disaster because of the humidity - think, sour dishrag times 20 pounds. Well, I opened the washer expecting to get a stomach turning wiff, and......nothing. No smell. I pulled the clothes out one by one and smelled each of them. I got to the pee pajama pants, hesitantly held them up to my nose and was shocked. I smelled the sheet.....NOTHING. NO smell on either! I usually have to wash pee sheets twice to get that smell out! I'm absolutely 100% sold. This stuff is seriously magic. Way to go, Nellie. Keep doing whatever it is that you are doing, because it just made this little section of my life a whole lot easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff! I'll be buying more.

Impressed with the reviews, this product was first brought to my attention on a blog about someone switching from homemade laundry soap to this, and that it was still economical. I just purchased a new front load washer and found out that liquid laundry soap can be bad for front loaders. I love the packaging, and the small simple scoop that makes measuring easy, especially for my kids who love to help out and tend to pour too much detergent in. I washed a load of sweaty stinky boy clothes and hung them out to dry... they smelled like nothing-- or fresh, sweet, clean air. We have alot of iron in our water so sometimes unscented laundry detergent leaves an "iron-y" musty water smell, but not with this! The next load was musty towels and some of my husband's work clothes, again the same sweet airy scent of.. well, nothing! A few items still had a faint lingering smell but I should have set the washer to heavily soiled, or maybe they needed to run through again. But after drying them with unscented wool balls in the dryer they just smelled plain clean. The final test was the dog's bed! Again, no wet dog smell, no smell at all! Very excited about this.
I've never had a brand loyalty to laundry detergent, whatever smelled nice and was cheap. If I wasn't happy, I'd try a slightly more expensive brand, or sometimes the "free & clear" types. This is the first time I've thought "I'm sticking with this stuff and never going back!" I've been recommending it to family and friends now.

I was a die hard ERA user until I tried Nellie's. We have a farm, so our clothes get a bit dirtier than the average city folk's laundry. I didn't think that Nellie's could keep up with our laundry, but I was pleasantly surprised when a grass stained and muddied pair of jeans came out of the wash as clean as a cat's conscience! Now, I'm hooked. I still pre-treat the stubborn stains (with Nellie's), but I've always pre-treated. By stubborn, I mean grass, blood, Oklahoma clay, green cow poop (it happens) and tomato gravy, ETC.
Bonus...all natural ingredients and penny wise! I get more loads for less money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why it’s ok to say goodbye to liquids and those little detergent packets.

Likes: I was able to see, feel and smell the cleanliness. I highly recommend this especially for sturdy fabrics like sheets, towels and pants. More proof: my washer needs to be cleaned more often likely due to the residue and oils it’s removing.
Dislike: I am clumsy and I always manage to spill the powder. On softer T-shirt fabrics the necks get loose so I do have to add a softener every other wash. And I have to face it. There is no miracle detergent that doesn’t require some pre-treat scrubbing on stains.
Overall: I’m impressed. It takes up a fraction of the space in our laundry area, my sensitive skin kids have zero issues, and I am convinced that our sheets and undergarments feel more breathable now that they’re free from residue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nellies convert!!

It's amazing! We cloth diaper and have been using All prior to this, but everything was coming out dingy and smelly. I was *this close* to switching to Tide because I want clean laundry but I just couldn't quite bite the bullet since we've made so much effort to switch all our home products to more natural and environmentally safer options. I tried Nellie's since the reviews were decent, even for cloth diapers. I'm so glad I did!! The ammonia smell has improved so much in the diaper laundry and this has finally started to remove some old stains from all our laundry. In a house with hard water (San Diego) and two toddlers, we have plenty of stains and this soap lets us wash and forget it. No extra rinsing, soaking or pre-treating necessary. We are so happily shocked with the results. I've only used one scoop, even on the nastiest of loads, and it has worked wonders. We use it in a Samsung HE washer. Fantastic product!!

I was searching for a natural but effective detergent for cloth diapers and cloth wipes. Nellies was top rated, comparable in price to powder tide, and natural so I gave it a try. Huge difference in clean in my diapers from using free and clear liquid. I use one scoop in the basin and one scoop in the trap, and wash on pre wash with extra rinse. Clean, no stains or odor. I have been using it on all our laundry now, even my picky husband has noticed the clothes seem cleaner, softer and I love there is no fragrance or chemicals. Will buy again, great value and works great.

This detergent is not really a detergent. It doesn’t foam, have a smell, or leave residue behind. It does get my clothes clean and leaves them smelling clean. I have a job where i sweat. A lot. And my clothes are clean! The only time I have to add something is when I’ve spilled a greasy foodnn by on my chest. Then a little dab if Dawn applied to the fabric before washing with Nellies and voila the oil stain is gone and the clothes are clean. No fading. No residue in the washer that mildews.

I do love this stuff. I was given a box to dry. I ran out. Went back to Tide free and had a mild sensation of itchy clothes. Which was not present when I was using the box of Nellie’s I had been given. So I bought it again from Amazon. And I will continue. In the long run it’s better (and less expensive) than a regular detergent.
