5.0 out of 5 starsDetailed analysis & tips, during my trip in Hawaii!
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2017
Incredible value for the money.
Great quality videos, acceptable photos, fully waterproof, good menu, plenty of accessories.
** Amazon compressed the video. It looks awesome on my computer **

Why did I choose the Akaso Brave?
1. Akaso has a better website (and hopefully support/warranty) compared other action cams I see on Amazon.
2. Olympus Tough TG-5 (amazing camera) was outside my budget.
3. GoPro Hero was way outside my budget.
4. Most waterproof cameras under $400 are mixed with bad reviews indicating leakage.

This camera is with me & the wife right now in Hawaii celebrating our ten year anniversary!

It has done a great job across several hours of salt water snorkeling, exploring beautiful pools, and adventuring in bamboo forests.

The wireless was relatively straightforward so I could transfer the photos and videos to my iPhone easily.

Here's some extra stuff I bought:
1. Flow by microJib ... floating, extendable handle. Worth every penny. Best one I could find.
https://www.amazon.com/Flow-MicroJib-Waterproof-Extendable-Floating/dp/B01MXHWWUA
2. Shoot waterproof diving light (works great; I have not submerged more than 5 feet underwater)
3. Samsung EVO 32GB microSD
4. Tekcam waterproof case (an extra, just in case, have not yet tested)
5. Extra batteries (two original batteries have each given me about 40 minutes of good use so far, so I have not tested new batteries)

When I need it handy, I store the Flow handle, my flash, and action cam (all connected ready to go) inside of two big socks.

What don't I like about this camera?
1. No lens protector :( so be careful to store your plastic waterproof case in a sock!
2. No ability to buy extra cases from the manufacturer (had to by 3rd party).
3. Included Remote control is not waterproof/submersible; there is no way to buy replacements from manufacturer.
4. Not quite the same quality as GoPro or Olympus TG-5 (but close for most people, and costs much less).
5. Photos: not nearly the same quality as iPhone or Samsung Android, but still acceptable.
6. Less support, no user manual, etc.

Here are some tips (for most people):
1. See my attached photo for how to insert microSD.
2. The screen will shut off to save battery. Tap the down button to turn it back on. (when snorkeling, for example)
3. When in video recording mode, tap the down arrow to turn microphone on or off.
4. In the menu, 1080 30 fps is a great high-quality video choice.
5. In the menu, 5M or 8M will be decent for images/photos, for most people. (Larger values increase the storage size & print size).
6. In the menu, turn OFF the loop recording, date stamp, motion detection, and beep sound. (for most people)
7. In the menu, set Auto Off to 10 minutes (for snorkeling/ adventuring).
8. In the menu, set Quality to fine.
9. In the menu, play around with Angle.
Wider angles can be more fisheye for objects on the edge, but wide is great for snorkeling.
10. Yes you CAN delete photos/videos from the preview mode on screen.
Hold the up arrow and push the enter button on top; you will be prompted what to delete.

Overall I am super super pleased.
Incredible value, easy to use.
Great videos and acceptable photos. Lots of features and accessories.

This review is sincere. If the action cam disappoints in the future, I'll update my review.

1.0 out of 5 stars1 BATTERY ONLY LASTS 25 MINUTES FULLY CHARGED & CROOKED CUSTOMER SERVICE- BEWARE!!
Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2020
Why does this company LIE here in the product description saying the battery life is up to 90 minutes?!?! That's a TOTAL LIE!!! We've had these cameras (THREE OF THEM!) for a FULL YEAR now and batteries will only last about 20-30mins. fully charged!!! Worst battery life ever!!!!

Aside from that, I'm pleased with other features of the product, but the battery life is totally a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Had I known this BEFORE we made our purchase, we wouldn't have bought THREE cameras. I mean, 20 minutes battery life is absolutely RIDICULOUS when you're using this cameras to capture outside adventures and such! TOTAL CRAP!

***** UPDATE MAY 20, 2020: THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL TRY TO BUY YOUR RATING/REVIEW!
I LOWERED THEIR RATING FROM THE ORIGINAL 2 STARS TO 1 STAR DUE TO "QUESTIONABLE" CUSTOMER SERVICE TACTICS!
An Akaso customer service representative reached out to me via email last week due to my low rating review. On her very first email she offered a replacement kit (camera & batteries) at NO cost or a partial refund so I could be a "satisfied Akaso customer". I then replied that a replacement doesn't really do me ANY good, since their battery life is total garbage. She replied that: "we do not hear from other customer's complain", she then offered again a new replacement kit (camera & batteries), and then also said: "Would you please update the comment to 5 stars to reflect our customer service in advance?"
In my reply email I told her she could mail me a new kit, however, I wasn't going to LIE and change my rating from 2 starts (which is now 1) to 5 just because she was going to send me a new kit with the same crappy batteries. My 2 start rating was based on the product (or in this case, the battery life), not on their customer service.
Upon receiving my email saying this, she then replied: "In this case we may could not send you a new camera but we can still send you a battery kit, does it work for you?"
I could NOT believe my eyes! She backed out of her original offer and flat out expressed that since I wasn't going to change my rating to five stars, then she wouldn't honor her initial offer to me. I was so disgusted by this horrible way to conduct business by trying to BUY PEOPLE'S REVIEWS/RATINGS, so I replied back telling her that I was going to expose her customer service and lower their rating to 1 star due to this. So that's what I'm doing right now. I still can't believe the nerve of these people! What kind of "customer service" is that?!?!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice camera for a great price, well worth the cost compared to a Gopro.

I purchased this camera so that I can use a suction cup mount for my car when I do road racing and drag racing. I have tried several different modes with this camera and they all work great. There is a nice anti shake camera built into the camera which works very well. When there is enough light set up, the picture on this camera is crystal clear as well as the videos. The cameras menu is very basic and very easy to get to even with the case that comes with the camera. There is both a clear protection case that is not waterproof and then an extra back plate that allows you to take the camera on trips where you plan on being wet.

I have not yet had a chance to use the full waterproof case but it does seem well built and other reviewers have stated that it does in fact work underwater. I will be trying the waterproof case when my dads pool is opened up. I did some testing by using one of the mounts to strap the camera onto my Archery bow. I strapped it onto the end of the stabilizer. Unfortunately, the batteries die very quickly on the camera. I had the camera in stand by mode and even after a short amount of time you have to change batteries.

Overall, in good light, the camera takes excellent video and excellent 20MP photos. There are two batteries with the camera but in the heat of the moment it can be difficult to get the camera out of the case and swap the battery out. The camera is very lightweight so you can't even tell you have it and it doesnt need the hard cases to function. The camera does not pick up low light very well at all.

Great purchase! Ordered this days before a trip after hours of comparing various cameras, but so happy I got this one. Perfect pictures on the beach so far. Would have been five stars but in the couple of days I have been using it, I haven't been able to get the wifi connectivity to my phone to work. None of the apps seem to be real or working. Love the ability to change the angle settings, the timer with 2s 5s or 10s, burst shot while filming, motion activated feature and time lapse. Will be using it this weekend while we go snorkeling and will provide an update on how those video and photos come out.

I bought this camera in hopes that the diving mode would produce better color than my previous camera. I would have to say there is a very very minimum difference. The 1st 2 photos I'm showing are in Cozumel at approximately 35 - 40 feet which is shallow for diving. The 3rd photo is snorkeling with the fish swimming right in front of the camera.

The function of the camera does work well and I'm very satisfied with that. We had no problems with it on our trip or using it recording inside our house. But if you're thinking of this camera for diving purposes, don't expect photo's to show the vibrant colors underwater. Unfortunately for that I may have to look for a more professional "diving" camera.

Jack
4.0 out of 5 stars A great camera with a few user-friendliness issues
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2017

I'll be right up front - Akaso reimbursed me for my purchase as payment for testing and reviewing this camera. I've made every effort to make this an objective, honest review. I have been an amateur photographer for 40 years and worked professionally for a number of years as a human factors researcher and designer with Bell Telephone Laboratories, and have been giving Akaso feedback on the user interface of this camera. I own three of these cameras,, starting with the 5000 model, then the 7000 model, and now this Brave 4 model. This is by far the best model of the three. though the user interface needs work. Thus the four stars instead of five.

Akaso has been responsive to my evaluations, and I have decided to present an abbreviated overview of the camera here plus photographs with technical details on settings and ways to make corrections to the images if you wish.I generally correct the lighting (levels) because I always shoot with the exposure value (EV) turned down a stop or two. However, often the images are so good, you may not want to correct them at all. I'll start with the good stuff because the bottom line is that this is a fantastic little camera.

I"ve concentrated on still photos because all three of the Akaso cameras produce outstanding videos. If you would like to read a good review of the video function, here's a link: https://prodrenalin.com/review-akasa-brave-4-action-camera/ . The stills show a remarkable improvement with the Brave 4 and its Sony chip. Below are a number of examples I shot with permission in gallery store in central PA. Most are inside, some outside. I'll upload more later. I've found that to get the best images, choose the settings as follows: gyroscope on, WDR off, angle as you like, there is less distortion with the smaller angles, special effects off because special effects usually add a computerized aspect to the images, though I have not tested it in this camera yet, image size maximum if you want all the pixels and information that the camera produces, quality fine, sharpness off because you don't need it, white balance auto because auto work great, color I have not tested, ISO should be set as low as you can get away with because 400 gets grainy - the set I'm uploading today has an ISO between 100 and 200, EV (exposure value) can be set at a negative 1/3 or one stop lower to get the best color - I use minus 1/3 (but be aware that reducing the EV means the levels probably have to be corrected later on), thrun antishake on and you are ready to roll.

Take your photos from at least 4+ feet away. While the camera has an outstanding depth of field, it does not do well with closeups. It also will occasionally zoom to 5x - a new feature - but it is not optical zoom, it's a digital zoom so the zoomed image is only slightly better than cropping a non-zoomed image. Try to keep the camera parallel to the ground to reduce distortion. You can also avoid distorting the image by making sure that major horizontal objects in the scene are also horizontal and straight in your display. If they are curved, you are tilting the camera. Don't do that. Hold the camera as still as you can before and after taking the photo until the display information is again printed on the display. That keeps you from moving the camera while the lens is still open. Look for color because this little camera produces absolutely fantastic, realistic colors. Keep your fingers away from the lens because the fish-eye wide angle will photograph anything that's close to it - the wide angle is 170 degrees wide.

The images below were taken inside and out using the setting above. I've tried to pair them with the original image from the camera, rotated if necessary. The corrected ones were genrrally corrected in Photoshop Elements or Fastone. Elements has a great distortiion filter, and adjusting levels and white balance is a cinch in either program. I only needed to correct white balance for two images and the correction is very small but obvious. These photos are difficult for any camera because the lighting was a combination of natural light, tungsten, and fluorescent - a hard combo for even the best cameras. This camera shined in this situation. The photos are reduced to about 500 kb. In general, the original images were 5-6 MB, at 72 dpi. According to the charts, that's enough for at least a 24x36 print.

I'll try to upload different ones with explanations of how the camera was set occasionally, but this set is a pretty good example of what the camera can do. Now I keep it in my car or pocket all the time.

Here are the main issues I have with this camera. They don't outweigh the good features, so don't let them stop you from purchasing the Brave 4 at this great price. However, this camera would be even better if these items were corrected: (a) the battery door is easily lost and not hinged. I use a piece of scotch tape where the hinge should be to keep from loosing it. (b) the control process is clumsy and hopefully can be improved with a firmware update. I won't go into detail; you will see what I mean as you click through the order of items (c) there is no really useful user manual. A good one could be done online very easily. (d) the wi-fi is hard to understand and get to work...at least on my devices. Same with the wrist band control, and instructions for both are lacking.

Again, none of these things is a deal-breaker at this price. If this camera cost $300 or more, they would be much more of a problem.

Make a comment if you have questions, and hopefully it will get sent to me. J

4.0 out of 5 stars I missed out on recording quite a few awesome moments because of this issue
Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2018
Verified Purchase
My biggest problem is that the camera commonly has "false starts" where the video starts recording and suddenly stops again after about a second. I missed out on recording quite a few awesome moments because of this issue. To help avoid this, turn on the voice notifications and listen carefully for the camera to say "video start" or "video stop."

Battery life of the included batteries is about 90 minutes when filming on 1080p 30fps. Battery life is much shorter, about 45 minutes, when filming in very cold weather.

Video quality is okay but not great. The Wide Dynamic Range setting (WDR) does not work as well as other action cameras. On a sunny day, the camera does weird things on the horizon. The horizon sometimes looks obviously digital and the boundary of earth and sky becomes discolored.

The audio quality is not great, the gain is very low (naked camera, not inside the waterproof case)

I've enclosed a short video and a still photo so that you can decide on the clarity this great little camera provides. It plays for me in Window's Media Player. I am very satisfied with the clarity and it is very easy to operate. For filming an "action" video, I am 62 years old and the only action scene I'll be doing is crawling out of the bed in the morning. Believe me, you do not want to see that! P.S. After I posted this review I played the video. The video showed poorly. It is as clear as the picture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everyone loves the camera... so why does the Android app suck so badly?
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2021
Verified Purchase
Like so many others, I am amazed at what this little camera provides and there are thousands of reviewers who agree. But here's the thing - this would have been a 5 star review but the android app is worse than terrible. Why worse? Well, if I screw with something for a few hours then finally get it to work, that's terrible product performance. If I screw with it for hours then FAILING to get it to work - that's worse than terrible.

A decent app is mission-critical to wirelessly download your files. There is no longer a Camking android app in the Google Play store. Its absence for Android users is disturbing. This is a major fail that Akaso REALLY needs to fix. This is not the action of a manufacturer wanting to be respected and legitimate. They recommend a kluge called the AKASO DV app as an alternate which would not even connect to the camera! Wow. I tried 6 other Play store apps and the only one I found that connected consistently to the Brave 4 (enable the AKASO camera WiFi first!) was LD Cam. It also gave minimal camera functions such as switching between camera and video mode, adjust resolution from the app, and a few other items. The main benefit is that it allows you to easily download pics and videos to your phone. LD Cam creates a folder in your phones main Download folder called LDCam with a subfolder called LDCam Download. That's where your files wind up.
AKASO! You need to fix this app problem! Licence a version from LD Cam if you have to.

Otherwise, the camera is a GREAT and inexpensive alternate to the GoPro line. The included accessories group is extensive and amazing. And not so worried if I crash it for 80 bucks.

I came very close to returning it but now with LDCam there is a path to move forward.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little action camera
Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2022
Verified Purchase
So far, I'm very impressed with this camera. I'm trying to get my Youtube channel going and don't have the money for a GoPro at this point, so I was looking for a cheaper alternative. I made the decision to purchase this camera based on the thousands of 5-star reviews. I was able to get everything I need for a little over $100. It arrived today, and I'm already very impressed with it. The quality of the camera feels good, and it came with a ton of accessories. I charged up the batteries and spent a little time playing around with it. The firmware and touchscreen seem to be responsive and written in good English (a surprise, for once). I downloaded the app to my Samsung Note 20 Ultra and I was able to connect the camera on the first try without any issues whatsoever. This camera is packed with great features that all seem to work flawlessly. The only issue I've had so far is registering the warranty. When I try doing this on the website, it just loads indefinitely and doesn't take me to another page. I just contacted support about this issue, so we'll see what they say.

Update: 03/23/2022
Unfortunately, I'm contemplating returning this before I get past the return window. The stabilization isn't all that great, and the audio quality is horrible at best. I made a couple videos with this, and I had to completely mute the clips and do a voice over for the entire video. This might not be an issue if I were to remove the waterproof case, but then I can't use any of my body mounts that I purchased for it. The camera allows for an external mic, but the Akaso mics supposedly aren't compatible with this particular camera. I wasn't expecting much for night recording, but in poorly lit scenes, you can't see anything but a black screen. When you do add light, the image is filled with tons of colored pixels which reminds me of watching a TV show over-the-air in the early 2000's. This camera might work for you, but it's not going to work out for me. I'm trying to get my YouTube channel up and running, and it's hard to get people to subscribe when you're putting out low-quality content. It looks like I'll be in the market for a GoPro.

4.0 out of 5 stars The photo and video quality are so good that I cancelled my return because the Cam King software does not work

But I'm still hoping that they will fix the problem that the Cam King software will not open on my SmartPhone, therefore, I cannot control/view the camera with my phone. If they fix that, I'll return to up the stars to five.

The other problem that I'm choosing to ignore is that, in order to mount the camera on a screw-mount tripod or selfie stick, the only way is to use the included waterproofing container, which results in two problems: a) the video has no audio b) the camera gets warm.

My solution was to purchase this item :B00M3ZW3MI. This fabulous deal contains not only a selfie stick but also a frame to hold the camera on top of the both the selfie stick and the included miniature tripod. BTW, the custom case for the bundle, by itself, is worth more than the $23.99

4.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A SOLID CAMERA

I wanted a go pro or similar type camera that i can take pictures and videos with. The GoPros are ridiculous expensive when it comes to pricing and in all honesty I'm not into filming all my endeavors that much anyway. not to mention spending hours and hours, editing video to make cool videos that your friends and family will surely get tired of sooner or later.
I just wanted a nice little camera that i could mount if i wanted to and play around with but now go knee deep in dept over. This Asako Camera is super affordable, especially for it being able to shoot in 4k. This camera has wifi capabilities so you can connect it with your phone and control some of the features from your phone. It also has micro usb slots and the necessary wires to connect it with your computer for easy download of pictures and videos. I have a Mac and it worked really well with it. the camera allows you to choose from many different video options including 4k, 1080p, 720, and so forth and has a 20mp camera that you can actually change light and aperture settings on and take awesome night shots with. It comes with so many accessories that i don't even know what all of them do, but it's nice you don't have to pay even more for accessories. it comes with 2 batteries and each are supposed to last 90 min each. I don't know if that is true because i have not had the camera running 90 min strait, but i will tell you that I took a bike ride the other day which was about 65 to 70 min in length and filmed the entire bike ride beginning to end, and there were still plenty of battery left so I don't doubt it will last 90 min. It comes with a battery charging device so you don't have to use the camera itself to charge the battery. When it comes to water proof i can't speak to that as i don't do anything or need to do anything submerged or that would put the camera in harms way. I can tell you that one of my bike rides it started to downpour on me while i was in the middle, and when i got home and took it out of the case it was dry as a bone. I'm sure that is a lot different than submerging it though. It is a solid camera that takes really good still photos and the video quality is amazing. I think you will be totally shocked with how far your money goes with this camera. I know i was. At best i was hoping for a camera that i didn't have to spend a ton of money of video taping things that might get the camera busted anyway. then your out a lot of money for nothing. I ended up getting a really great 4k camera at a great price. I would totally recommend anyone try this camera before you go out and spends upwards of hundreds and hundreds of dollars on similar devices. If you don't like the quality then return it and by the 500 hundred dollar camera and see if it is leaps and bounds better. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I know i was!!

FIRST WAS THE GOOD NOW HERE'S THE BAD LOL

The only thing that i have or had a problem with, was getting the camera to link up with my phone initially. For some reason the wifi wouldn't recognize my phone and vice versa. I was very frustrated as it took me about a half an hour tinkering with it for it to finally work. Now that my phone and camera recognize each other it syncs up very quickly, but initially it was frustrating. It also does not come with a whole lot of instructions, and the instructions that are with it are minimal. They rely on you going to their website to download a user manuaL which kind of annoys me when companies do that. but other than those 2 things i say it's an amazing camera at one heck of a price.
