How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsRich, natural flavor of chocolate
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2020
UPDATE: I've been eating these nibs for a few weeks now and prefer them over Terrasoul (although I still like Terrasoul). I have to say that the 1-star reviews are from people who are simply uninformed about cacao nibs, thinking they are a healthy chocolate chip. Do your research and understand what you're buying before you downgrade a quality ingredient because you don't know about a product.

I've used Terrasoul raw cacao nibs for a few years in my smoothies, and I decided to try Nativas when I went to reorder after reading some of the reviews. I bought both and did my own taste test at home. So Terrasoul's nibs are fermented which is what makes a HUGE difference. The Nativas nibs are rich and chocolaty, and they have a good mouth feel. There are some larger chunks in the Nativas so it's less uniform. Terrasoul's have a little more consistency in size, but the Terrasoul nibs have a sour note from the fermenting (it's similar to espresso in that regard). I've only had one smoothie with the Nativas nibs so I'm not sure about the entire package, but there seemed to be fewer harder pieces in it than what I find in the Terrasoul nibs. The Terrasoul is priced better, but I think I'm leaning more to the Nativas brand now. Time will tell, but I am happy with both brands for my needs.

1.0 out of 5 starsFood item that can cause potential birth defects or reproductive harm??!!
Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018
I’m not sure why a food product would even contain a statement that states the product contains chemicals that can cause
potential birth defect or reproductive harm. If such chemical is present in a food item why is it being sold? Or why is it even being produced in a way that can cause such bodily harm. I’m not sure I understand it or how high the possibilities are but why would anyone risk their health on a so called healthy food item. We requested for a refund immediately!

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF FAKE NIBS AKA RUBBER PIECES
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2020

So as I was pouring some nibs on my yogurt I saw an unusually BIG nib but didn’t think much about it until...I started to eat. Then in one bite instead of the usual “crunch” of the nibs, it was chewy...like rubber I thought...but I kept chewing...then I realized...I’m chewing on a piece of rubber😩😝😠. I’m glad I didn’t swallow it! I don’t know how often this happens but I won’t be getting these again!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad batch. Update: 2nd strike and you're out!
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2021
Size: 16 OunceStyle: UnsweetenedVerified Purchase
I've been a long time customer of this brand. For a while, I tried a few cheaper brands, but came back to Navitas for their more consistent quality. Well, all that changed after my latest batch.

I got 3 bags that all have the same issue. Probably 99% of the nibs seem fine. But, there's a very small number of them that have a foul chemical taste so bad that it completely spoils a mouthful of whatever they're in. I tried eating them one-by-one, to see if there's any visual way to spot them, and I'm not sure there is.

So, I'm giving Navitas one more chance. If it happens again, I'm done with this brand. This is worse than any problem I ever had with other brands (which had bits of husk or even the occasional pebble).

The expiration date is APR 2022 and the Lot Code is 21020288 C.

Update: I got another bag that's not quite as bad, but still has a strong chemical (almost smoky) flavor. Time to switch brands.

The expiration date of this bag is JUL 2022 and the Lot Code is 21021005 C.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tooth-shattering debris. Still searching for nibs without debris
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020
Size: 16 OunceStyle: UnsweetenedVerified Purchase
See photo (corn kernel for size reference). Pretty much every handful has a piece of hard inedible debris. The photo is debris collected from only 1/2 of the 16 oz bag.

I've been eating raw nibs for many years. I used to buy Healthworks in 5lb bags and almost never found any debris at all. My last Healthworks order however, (Feb 2020), had so much debris I had to throw it away. I went with Navitas this time even though it was more expensive because of the reviews. While the flavor is excellent, it has WAY too much foreign debris in it.

Can anyone recommend a debris-free brand?

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't melt
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2018
Size: 16 OunceStyle: UnsweetenedVerified Purchase
First off, these are pretty gross by themselves. I don't recommend eating them alone. I bought these to use in fat bombs (I'm keto). They would not melt no matter how long I stirred on the stove. Finally, I got tired of stirring and just finished making the fat bombs anyways. I thought having the bits of chocolate in the bombs would be cool. When in the fat bombs, with other ingredients including heavy whipping cream, almond milk, protein powder and pecans they are actually very good. The flavor of everything else hides the gross flavor of these nibs. They do also add a crunch to the bombs which is kind of nice. But since they don't melt (not even in your mouth) you'll spend several minutes picking the bits out of your teeth after eating a fat bomb. I'll try a different brand next time around, one that actually melts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tasteless crunched up cocoa beans...
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2019
Size: 16 OunceStyle: UnsweetenedVerified Purchase
Well the glowing description of taste ect. seems more like a deception. Lets face it cocao nibs are just hard tasteless buts of cocoa beans. Tasteless. I finally put some in a cup with boiling water - just enough to soften them hopefully. The water did turn brown and there was flavor but not exactly what I would call chocolate. Finally I threw the soggy bits in my nutribullet with some milk and a bit of sugar. Then I microwaved it to warm it up and hopefully get flavor. Truthfully it was still not very chocolatey and it was somewhat gritty after taste. So I guess I'm gonna throw the rest into a coffee grinder and powder it up into cocoa. A waste of money and time unless you love tasteless crunchy bits.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not taste like chocolate
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2019
Size: 4 OunceStyle: UnsweetenedVerified Purchase
I bought this having never tried nibs before. I really like chocolate and I like the idea of eating healthier chocolate. I figured worst case scenario I could pass them off to my husband who actually enjoys bitter chocolate. When I first ate a few, they tasted like tree bark to me. I could detect no cocoa flavor. My husband tried them and said they tasted most like a coffee bean without the coffee flavor. He was able to a mild chocolate flavor when he ate them combined with some peanuts, he still has no desire to keep eating them. My teenage son tried them and pronounced them inedible. Take that assessment for what it's worth but at this point I'm annoyed that I spent $7 on this.

I've eaten food from all over the world and this has to be in the top 10 worse things I've put in my mouth. I mixed these with some nuts and other low carb diet goodies and as I ventured toward the bottom of the bowl Istarted having a reaction like, "What the hell got in there" ? It was like munching on asphalt bits. Returning.

1.0 out of 5 stars Prop 65 (Cancer Warning)

I bought this product because it is a superfood (very healthy). However there is a Prop 65 label on it. So basically something causes cancer within this product. Yet I bought this product for improved health. Worst part was that I was not able to get a refund.
