5.0 out of 5 starsRich, natural flavor of chocolate
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2020
UPDATE: I've been eating these nibs for a few weeks now and prefer them over Terrasoul (although I still like Terrasoul). I have to say that the 1-star reviews are from people who are simply uninformed about cacao nibs, thinking they are a healthy chocolate chip. Do your research and understand what you're buying before you downgrade a quality ingredient because you don't know about a product.

I've used Terrasoul raw cacao nibs for a few years in my smoothies, and I decided to try Nativas when I went to reorder after reading some of the reviews. I bought both and did my own taste test at home. So Terrasoul's nibs are fermented which is what makes a HUGE difference. The Nativas nibs are rich and chocolaty, and they have a good mouth feel. There are some larger chunks in the Nativas so it's less uniform. Terrasoul's have a little more consistency in size, but the Terrasoul nibs have a sour note from the fermenting (it's similar to espresso in that regard). I've only had one smoothie with the Nativas nibs so I'm not sure about the entire package, but there seemed to be fewer harder pieces in it than what I find in the Terrasoul nibs. The Terrasoul is priced better, but I think I'm leaning more to the Nativas brand now. Time will tell, but I am happy with both brands for my needs.

1.0 out of 5 starsFood item that can cause potential birth defects or reproductive harm??!!
Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018
I’m not sure why a food product would even contain a statement that states the product contains chemicals that can cause
potential birth defect or reproductive harm. If such chemical is present in a food item why is it being sold? Or why is it even being produced in a way that can cause such bodily harm. I’m not sure I understand it or how high the possibilities are but why would anyone risk their health on a so called healthy food item. We requested for a refund immediately!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product

Pretty much everything I expected. Based on other reviews and some quick Googling, I toss a small handful into my oatmeal, and it really adds a nice crunch to it. I've also tried grounding some up to make hot "cocoa", and it tastes like hot cocoa without any sugar.

I wasn't expecting it to be anything like typical chocolate, and I'm not sure why so many people thought it was. The sour/vinegary smell/taste some people so dramatically complain about isn't that strong. It's unusual, and if you weren't expecting the unique smell, or expecting it to smell like milk chocolate, then you might be surprised. It's nutty, it's bitter, but you can taste the chocolate (not the highly sweetened kind but like 90+% dark chocolate).

As for the "shells" that some people complain about, there's some "skin" (not sure exactly what it's supposed to be called) that's still attached to a few of the nibs, but nothing crazy (see picture). It's similar the skin on pistachios and other nuts. I usually take a look at what I grab out of the bag and pick it out. If I missed one or two, which I've probably done already, it probably wouldn't be noticeable.

If you care for sweet chocolate these are not for you.

I bought two variety of nibs to try.

I like the texture and nutritional value. But they taste like coffee grounds are kinda plain.

When I use them in cocoa they mellow. And remind me of steel-cut oats. I'm guessing these aren't for drinks 🤔

In oatmeal and waffles these are delicious. In the oatmeal also add hazelnut syrup. Grown up oatmeal 😊

Recipe: Oats, cocoa nibs, walnut pieces, chia seed, golden flax milled, cut-up frozen berries like cranberry or blueberry. Prefer frozen because they taste juicer when cooked in Belgium waffles and pancakes.

Similar ingredients for Belgium waffles. I use an organic mix or Kodiak. Just add water for either. Use a tablespoon of Apple sauce in place of oil.

Plain the taste isn’t for me. But added to products find the texture interesting and an added texture I like.

The most unique new ingredient I’ve ever tried.

If you’re looking for a tiny cocoa bits that are sweet tasting. This is not for you.

If you’re open to trying a new nutritional option that has a unique quality to add variety to cooking options this can be a new door to countless treats

4.0 out of 5 stars An upgrade in taste and quality from the cheap stuff
Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020

I was buying a cheaper brand of cocoa nibs and was happy with them when I pulverized them for breakfast smoothies. However, I noticed some reviewers mentioned the cheaper brand’s poor quality and was curious... was I missing something? The listed ingredients were the same, and the nutritional information was very similar. So I bought the cheaper brand along with this one and compared them side-by-side.

First off, the price difference is huge! These are nearly double the price of the other brand! But after tasting each one, Navitas cocoa nibs are much better; even when blended into a smoothie I notice the difference. Although these are more expensive, I’ll be ditching the other brand from now on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tastes Pretty Good
Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2012

I want to begin by saying that I'm no Cacao expert; this is the first time I've tried it. I wanted to try it for three reasons: 1)Honestly, a trusted friend suggested it, 2)I'm always looking for healthy snacks to fill my day (I'm on the go constantly), 3)Cacao's "supposed" health benefits (I'm not saying it does or does not have them...just alluding to the fact that I'm no health/nutritional expert). So, here's what I think. These are going to be an acquired taste (like beer). Actually, they very much remind me of a red wine (a burgundy, maybe)...the bag even smells like wine when you open it up. They are very tiny pieces. They are very crunchy (if you have teeth that are very sensitive I'd think twice about getting these). Upon tasting them: on the front of the palate it tasted very much like a red wine, then slightly bitter, and moving to the back of the palate it tasted very earthy and you got the flavor of cocoa powder...then swallow (you are going to want something to rinse it down...it's a little grainy at that point). I like the texture and I like the taste (but then again, I like wine). I have mixed it into yogurt and I find it rather good...you get less of the wine/bitter flavors and more of the earthy and traditional cocoa powder flavors. I use honey flavored Greek yogurt. I also eat them plain as little nibbles...they don't bother me that way either (a little "wake-me-up"). If the flavor really offends you, but you want the health benefits, you can order Organic Sugar Cacao Nibs (do an internet search), they are tossed with organic cane syrup (I will try those for a treat soon). That's all I got! Cheers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only if you can't have any sugar. These are strong and unenjoyable almost

This definitely is for people that don't want any sugar. It's hard to enjoy these even though they are healthy and I think this company might pay attention to the heavy metals unlike others. I wish I could find a heavy metal free organic low sugar chocolate bar. I've really tried and it's almost impossible believe it or not. When it's zero sugar it's just not enjoyable and super strong and bitter. I think most of us could handle a little bit of sugar. All kinds of organic chocolate bars are loaded with heavy metals, I have consumerlab testing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Thought They'd Be
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2012

I've had raw cacao before, in recipes, but never by itself, really. I knew it was slightly bitter and acidic in the stomach, but I'd never really thought about it as a snack. Because of the name, 'nibs', I was expecting something more along the lines of a 'snack', so I expected these to have some flavor other than bitter. These are SUPER bitter. You do NOT want to put a handful in your mouth and chomp down on them. But we heard the had some amazing healthful properties, so we got the bag and started looking at how to use these nibs.

First, if you put just one on the tip of your tongue and literally just 'nibble' on the 'nib', it's quite good. It's similar in a way to sucking on coffee beans, if you've ever done that, only not as much 'juice' from it.

Secondly, these are perfect for grinding up into a powder with some raw sugar (our your favorite natural sweetener) and adding this into hot drinks, like chai teas, or cold drinks like shakes or smoothies. Great breakfast item to help kickstart a day with some natural caffeine type of boost. These are fantastic to add into the hot liquid of a tea directly, or if you use a loose tea in a teaball, you can add a pinch of these to the teaball and steep or brew it.

Thirdly, these are not bad sprinkled on salads or other dishes where the other flavors will overpower the bitterness some, and they provide a healthy, boosting, crunch to the food. Baked potatoes, salads, dressings, etc.

If you use them in this way, you get some great antioxidants and a little bit of a pick-me-up, without the bitterness and acidity you get from eating them by themselves. The bag says a service size is one ounce, so the bag contains eight services, but honestly, you won't want to eat an ounce of these at one sitting- that's a LOT of these little nibs. You'll use a little spoonful in most things, so this 'little' bag is going to last a long, long time.

They are worth trying if you like more savory things, love teas that are spicy and heady, and want to boost your diet in a healthy, natural way. For what they are, this brand and product was quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tastes okay but I've had better

Updating my review because I was a bit too harsh initially. I was a bit disappointed at first that these didn't taste as chocolatey as other nibs I've had, but these grow on you FAST. While I've had better, these are absolutely fine and delicious when added to my smoothie bowls.

It has a great taste. I have only eaten it plain. I am on a sugar free diet so this is what eat sometimes when I am craving sugar. I haven’t tried to blend so I can’t comment on that aspect but it tastes good non blended. I haven’t noticed any difference in energy levels but I don’t feel any difference from coffee either so I Probably just have a very high tolerance in general.

Nibs are very crunchy, no sweet at all, first taste is very “weird”, and then I used to. A Friend of mine who is American said “this item is gross” :-)) (she is sugar-cookie-lover). I think I won’t buy it again, but I’m glad I tried it. It’s really very specific taste.

Ok so with doing keto I find it hard to grab a quick sweet treat. So I top a tbs or 2 on top of my blueberries and definitely feels like a sweet treat. But to eat plain blah no sweet fix. But topping on my berries I absolutely love it and can stick to getting my fix in and meeting my fat macros
