This is the first review that I ever wrote but this needs to be said. I've been buying this product ever since 2014. When I first started using it the flavor was very strong and would give a unique taste to desserts that I make. I literally only needed 1/2 tsp. for a batch and it would add a new dimension of flavor to whatever I was making.
Around 2016 they changed the formula for this extract. I noticed the color was lighter and the flavor was not as strong. Initially, I was upset but I was able to manage. I had to up the amount from 1/2 tsp. per recipe to 1.25 tsp. for it to have an impact.
Now in 2018 they have again changed the formula. The product was initially labeled/described as "Imitation Caramel Extract" and now it has changed to "Caramel Flavor" with "Natural Flavors". I opened a bottle of this yesterday and it smelled nothing like caramel but rather like maple syrup and alcohol. The irony is that in an attempt to make a natural product the result was a product that now has unnatural characteristics.
1. It smells nothing like the flavor it is supposed to be
2. The color is almost clear and nothing like caramel
I put this in my cake frosting and the frosting tasted overly sweet as if I poured syrup in it. If you're looking for an extract to add caramel flavor to your drinks or baked goods then DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!
