5.0 out of 5 starsFinally no more WiFi dead spots!
Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020
I mainly purchased the zenwifi mesh routers because I cannot receive wireless signal at my front door for The smart doorbell and very spotty signal in my garage (a pain when I am on the phone driving home and 90% of the times get drop calls when I get to my garage) I have a 2 floor 3,500 sqft house with 4 bedrooms.

The whole setup took 20 minutes including unboxing, replacing my current AC1900 router, and using the ASUS router app to setup (only took 4 minutes!)

I totally love this router:

· My new smart doorbell finally works and I am getting full wifi coverage in the garage. I check all corners of my house with 0 dead spots. I place the main unit in the upstairs closet and the second unit on the first floor.
· My transfer speed also received a bump from my laptop wifi to my NAS storage transferring rate went from 9MB/s to 43MB/s! and I am able to have 5ghz faster band all over the house.
· Internet is showing maximum speed my ISP offers.
· Parental control works great limiting internet usage before bed time.
· I can also schedule the router to self-reboot on Saturday at 4am since router is sophisticated like a computer now and it’s better to let it power cycle every once in a while.

This router’s price is very competitive compare to the other offerings on the market and it’s worth every penny now that my house is blanked with wifi.

2.0 out of 5 starsTwice as fast as Orbi RBK 50, but having issues with devices switching
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020
I am coming from an Orbi RBK50 that I've been trying for the past week. I have a 1Gb up/down connection. On the Orbi, I couldn't get faster than around 500Mbps down over ethernet, let alone on wifi. With this Asus product, I am getting over 900 Mbps on ethernet and between 600 and 700 mbps on wifi. It has exceeded my expectations in terms of speed.

The only problem I am having is with my devices not switching between nodes. Three times in the last day, I have lost wifi connection on two phones and one iPad when from the room with the AiMesh node to the room with the router connected to my modem. On one device, it swapped over to an unrelated Netgear access point that I have up that I use to connect plugs and switches to the network. On the other two devices, it just dropped my connection completely. I had to turn off wifi and turn it back on to get it to come back.

I am not sure why it would do this, but obviously if it is continues, it's a problem. I got this device because it looked like a perfect solution to handle dead spots and keep my internet speed constant throughout my house. It appears to work well for that. But if it cannot effortlessly switch between nodes as I move around my house, it's not much of a mesh network.

Edit:
There are many things to like about this router. The speeds are amazing and I get decent wifi through my entire home. I updated the firmware a few days ago. Unfortunately, I am not having issues since the update. The first issue is that it has spontaneously rebooted a couple of times. The second issue is that I am not getting drops in wifi speed on various devices that connect to the point that I set up as the router. Rebooting the devices that I'm having issues with seems to fix it. I haven't had this setup all that long, obviously, but these issues only started after updating the firmware. I am reaching out to ASUS to try and troubleshoot. I have a couple of weeks before my return period ends, and I'd really like to make this work.

Edit 3/3/1/2020: This router continues to be decent yet very annoying at times. For a router where devices are supposed to switch between mesh points seamlessly, it certainly isn't doing well at all. I have the two nodes located at opposite ends of my house. There are a few walls between them, but they are on the same level. I've named them Living Room and Office. If I am in the Office and my phone stays connected to Living Room, then the internet speeds on my phone are almost non-existent. This doesn't make sense, unless the nodes themselves don't have a lot of power. A regular router will give me decent speed through the entire house. I would think that each of the nodes would at least be strong enough to broadcast to the entire house. The only way to get it to work is to manually disconnect Wifi on my phone and then reconnect. There are also times where it will just completely disconnect devices from Wifi and not reconnect. So I am still very hot and cold about this system. When it works, it works well. When it doesn't, it is very frustrating and annoying. Overall, I wish that I'd just stuck with the Orbi. Though the overall speeds on the Orbi are less than this, it handled switching between nodes much better and the antennas in the Orbi seem MUCH BETTER than on this thing.

Update 5/6/2020: I have regrets. I jumped on this router because it seemed like it was going to be amazing, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In addition to all of the issues listed above continuing in spite of the firmware updates, it is now causing other problems Just today, my Dish DVRs would not connect to it. When I went to re-add the network, it listed four access points with the same name. The only thing that made it come back was rebooting the router. It managed to be up 15 days. It keeps dropping various devices. My phone, my iPad, my Macbooks have all been victims of being dropped. It still refuses to switch between nodes when I move about the house. I'll get far enough away from one access point that it should switch, but it doesn't and the speed drops to nothing. My wife's phone will often just disconnect when it gets far enough away from the node it was connected to, and she'll have to shut off wifi and turn it back on to get it to reconnect. There is nothing seamless about this system. Because it was so expensive, I am going to have to run it into the ground before replacing it. I can't justify tossing it in a pile somewhere and replacing it. I wish that I could. Maybe someday they'll release an update that actually fixes these issues or maybe it's the hardware and there's just nothing that can be done. Either way, I'm stuck with this thing for the foreseeable future.

1.0 out of 5 stars I will Never Buy another ASUS Router
Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2020

I purchased the ZenWifi AX after reading the positive reviews, and a 7 year history with ASUS routers, creating a mesh network with a GT ROG AC5300 & an RT-AC86U.
The intent was to use the Zenwifi Routers as the primary router and a Wireless backhaul mesh node with the GT ROG AC5300 as an Ethernet backhaul device.
With previous routers, the setup was completed in less than 15 minutes, with the ZenWifi it was an hour, as I had the wireless back haul node connect at 2.4GHz, forcing me to restore the units to factory default and restart twice. The routers updated top the latest firmware during the initial power on configuration for the router node, and after connection for Mesh Node, ensuring that all nodes were at the latest version.
The firmware for all three units was updated within a few days of the initial configuration.
Living with the Zenwifi
In operation the WiFi clients would connect to nodes, in a strange fashion, not a big deal, except the majority of the WiFi clients always connected to the main router.
I have Wemo power switches controlled through the Apple Home APP, they were continually disconnecting from the nodes making home control painful.
I had tablets and phones disconnect from the network, initially thought to be the ISP, or perhaps some other reason, the performance also seemed slow given the 400Mbps connection.
Things improved each time the main router was rebooted, a favorite technique to reconnect the Wemo devices, but quickly deteriorated.
A change from Quad 9 DNS to Cloudflare DNS improved the throughput but not the disconnects, with the mesh node showing a disconnect from the router, signified by a the LED flashing blue. I also saw the Wireless Mesh Node connect to the GT ROG AC5300, which is physically further away from the router node, which all seemed strange.

I then looked at the top of the primary router and saw that the surface finish was delaminating from the case underneath, see the attached images, which lead me to the conclusion that this router was not up to the job it was being asked to do, no doubt not helped by the majority of the devices being connected to it.

I set up a call with ASUS service, missed the first call, setup a second call and the agent asked me for a description of the issue, and then asked me to send lost of logs, configuration files and a wireless case document.
After two weeks of back and forth with daily emails and more information, I asked about the delamination, and was asked if I had dropped the unit, so I sent lots of pictures that showed no damage and was told that if I had damaged the unit I would have to pay for the repair.

This was to much, and as I was approaching the end of the return window I setup a return, Amazon support Called me to try and resolve my problem, but as I explained the issue and shared the 8 ASUS case numbers assigned to my Dialouge, my return was quickly approved.

It takes a long time to build trust and two weeks to destroy that trust.

I will never buy another ASUS router, or in fact any ASUS products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mesh System - works great with Verizon FiOS ethernet ONT
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020
Style: Charcoal | Tri-Band | WiFi 6 | 2PKsVerified Purchase
I used this to replace the new FiOS WiFi6 gateway router and the difference is amazing, if you're looking for a comparison. When setting up, do not do anything that will interrupt your bluetooth connection during the process (i.e. take a phone call with AirPods in) and give it about half an hour for the router and node to update firmware and sync up during set-up. That's about how long it took before both stopped flashing blue or green and eventually were solid white and both showing up in the app.

As for the set-up, I have Verizon FiOS with a newer ONT that looks like a standard modem inside my house. Aside from their latest router, I've been extremely happy with FiOS and have no plans to change. To set up, I first logged in to the old router and set to factor defaults. Then, I released the DHCP and unplugged. The Asus system talked me through the rest, which included unplugging the ONT (modem), connecting the ethernet cable from the ONT to the ASUS router, then plugging the ONT back in. IP addresses will change, so just take note and clear out old defaults from anything connecting directly via an IP address. To access your new router's settings, go to router.asus.com from a web browser or use the app. Different functionality in both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great so far, if not the best I've had
Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021

I have had many ASUS routers over the years, but few years back I decided to try the Netgear Nighthawk X6. That was working fairly well, but had to be rebooted quite a bit, and the reporting never worked, so I couldn't determine who was using up our monthly broadband limit. So, I started looking for an upgrade and looked at the Netgear Orbi, Google and Amazon solutions, but after quite a bit of research I decided to go with the ASUS ZEN, and I have no regrets so far.

As former network engineer, I was looking for quite a bit features, such as detailed reporting on usage, built in parental controls, filtering, and option for hardwired backhaul, as well as few LAN ports for direct connect. Well the ASUS was the only set that offered all of it.
Setup was easy, first router was up and running in 15 min, then I connected the second one over the WAN port as backhaul and done.
Reporting: That boy has almost enterprise level of reporting ability, which I love. From the web interface, you can get usage per app, per devices, as well as visited websites. I already busted my teenager son for watching twitch tv during online learning :-)
Reporting/parental control app: The app allows you to group your devices (max 16) and give you ability to apply individual content filters per group, schedule internet off hours and also give you top apps and bandwidth used per group. So, I have one for each family members devices and few for IoT devices, which allows me to track who is using what from my phone with ease.
WIFI coverage: Definite improvement on that front, and no issue handling 50+ devices.
Anther cool feature is reboot schedule, in which case you can setup reboot time for the routers. It also has built in IPS, and advanced firewall, so protection is top notch as well.

The only issue I have noticed so far is the hand off, when moving between floors, where on occasion will drop the WIFI for a sec, but it rear and not an issue for me.

It also has integration with Alexa for some basic features or for turning on and off the guest WIFI.

Awesome buy so far for me, but my teens are definitely not too happy now :-)

And yes I figure out who drains our internet.

So I am a network engineer, and have been dealing with WLAN for years. Usually I have ethernet ran to various spots in my home and throw up AP's to get the best wifi coverage, but the new home I moved to didn't allow that. So I decided to go with wifi mesh, and ultimately went with these ASUS ZenWifi AX's. I bought 4 of them (2 sets of 2) and setting up was a breeze... once I stopped trying to use the app and just used the web interface. It is really user friendly and intuitive, there are some great power user features too. Adding nodes was super simple. Coverage is great using the 5Ghz wifi backhaul. minimal latency between nodes. My only recommendation is to set up automatic restarts on either an every other night, or every night basis.

After set up, the app is very useful, but for setting it up it failed time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beast Mode

I came from the latest Google nest/wifi mesh system. After constantly needing to reboot my routers, I replaced it with the TPLink DecoX90 mesh system. The problem with many other routers is needing to pay yearly $60-$100+ subscription fees for basic security features and parental controls and limited settings. The deco routers did not meet my requirements and I upgraded to the ASUS mesh system.

After researching all the Mesh Routers available right now, I was originally looking for the Two 5Ghz channel Asus XT12 vs the 6e routers. 6e devices are few and in between but the XT routers are not yet available in the US.

I decided to go with the 6e anyway and I'm not disappointed. These things are great. I am currently only using the main router and a wireless node but do plan on hardwiring them to improve the dedicated backhaul as a few reviewers have mentuoned. although it's not necessary for me with current speeds I'm receiving but I want to future proof the network for years to come. No disconnects on 35+ devices on my network, free router security (trend micro)/parental settings, built in DNS alternatives, vpn settings etc. Please note that there is currently no compatibility with Merlin Firmware at the time of this review.

Aside from that, let's talk about the signal strength. Wow. Even with all my previous dual/tri band routers in the same room, I still had interference from neighbors using the same channels. Not anymore! ALSO, using Asus guard you can connect another device (I'm using a pixel 6 pro) to your own routers vpn, free. No more paying for someone else's vpn and trusting their logging policies.

It even picked up signals the deco failed to pickup like my MyQ garage door smart hub.

Lastly, I did drop one star for the mobile app. The mobile app is great, especially compared to other brands limitations. however, it does not allow access to all settings like enabling ipv6. You have to log on from the desktop to access additional router settings. Once the app catches up to the desktop, 5 stars all around.

If you have a budget for some high end routers, I highly recommended the Asus ZenWifi

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Wi-Fi King in The Neighborhood
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021

A new Wi-Fi king in the neighborhood!

The older DOCSIS 3.0 combo (modem plus Wi-Fi router) started to have problems with our current Xfinity residential service. Upgraded to a new DOCSIS 3.1 combo from the same brand and started to have different issues such as weaker Wi-Fi coverage, random modem disconnects…
Needed a solid solution and decided to try to separate the modem and the Wi-Fi router. Picked a modem from the devices recommended for business subscribers. For a Wi-Fi router looked at few options and reviews for the last year and found the winner: “ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System”.
We live in a Wi-Fi congested neighborhood. After installing and configuring these 2 ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 devices there is a new Wi-Fi king in the neighborhood. Or at least it is The King now in our castle.
Used the new Wi-Fi router for about a week. After the initial new modem activation (different unit and brand), the setup and configuration of the ASUS router was easy for me. Then I connected about near forty smart devices we have at our home. About one-third of them are 1 Gbps CAT5e wired connections on upper and lower levels at the home, and the rest of these devices are floating between the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz SSID networks proved and managed by our new ASUS mesh system. Set both units to use their Wi-Fi hidden 5.0GHz network. I do have both mesh units plugged into UPS systems. I have not measured how long these Wi-Fi networks can survive during a power outage on the current UPS sources.
The new network solution at home is pricier. It is more than twice as expensive when compared to the previous unit (a modem with a built-in wired and Wi-Fi router). While our internet plan is far below the Gigabit service tiers, I am very happy that no one in the family noticed any Wi-Fi or wired networking or any internet service issues at all.
The Print Server solution from ASUS seems to be little bit slower compared to the former solutions. But it works!
I cannot comment and provide any rating on ASUS customer service as I had no need to interact with them at all. Be aware that these units arrive with 2 years manufacturing warranty backed up by ASUS.
Currently, I do not plan to enable the 3-rd party network lifetime protection offered as bundle by TrendMicro.
For geeks and tech savvy enthusiasts there is AsusWRT-Merlin open source project. Some day this ASUS mesh system may be in the list of supported devices for these firmware alternatives.
After having several custom-build desktop systems with ASUS motherboards and components, I switched and used couple of Asus ZenBook laptops. Now this is my first ever ASUS router. And I like it and highly recommend it!

Photos: the ASUS WiFi mesh system and the new modem (separate unit/brand). Two WiFi spectral scanners screenshots where the peaks are from the ASUS WIFI router.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive!

Not sure if they worked out the issues that previous posters mentioned about AP hand offs and disconnects, but mine is rock solid after a few days (fresh factory batch as of Sept. 26th). I did notice that a few features were disabled by default in the latest firmware such as QoS and Wifi Agility - perhaps those were/ are problematic.

My specifics: I have a 400mb ISP connection coming into a (different) Asus router feeding into a patch panel that allows me to use ethernet backhaul to the upstairs unit with wifi backhaul to the downstairs until. My 3000+sq/ft 2 story house gets max bars in every room, as well as, front and back yard. The furthest reaches of the back yard reduced throughput to 200-300mbit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect upgrade from Apple Time Capsule
Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2022
Style: WiFi 6E | 11000Mbps | 2PKsVerified Purchase
I have been hesitant upgrading my time capsule and AirPort Extreme pseudo mesh set up, I was only getting 350Mbps.

I am glad I bit the bullet, I even bought the ET12 used to save some money and it was like new.

I immediately upgraded the firmware and set up the second 2.5gig port to a switch, that goes to my pc and the second node. My pc maxes out my Comcast 1400Mbps plan, real world download speeds of 175MB/s, downloads are unreal, nearly doubling my wired throughput.

On my laptop the wireless connects at 1200Mbps, and my iPhone 13 Pro Max I get a speed test of roughly 650-700mbps.

Coverage wise I couldn’t be happier, I live in an apartment with a lot of interference, I set the freqs to the least busiest channels and I haven’t had a single issue. Initially Asus auto channels to channel 8 for 2.4ghz, odd because it overlaps with so many other channels. So I manually set it to 11 to be safe.

The mobile app is nice, but it takes some getting used to finding what your looking for. The web log in is full of everything you could need and works well on mobile. But the app is nice for quick changes or rebooting.

It’s also nice that you can bind specific devices to either node, so you don’t have smart devices connecting to a node that’s far away.

Real-time speed in the app is nice, and built in ad block set per device is great.

You can also turn off the LED in app which is nice for the node in the bedroom.

I haven’t turned on any Ai-Protect stuff as it sends your data to trend micro, granted that’s by design for “protection” but it’s not private.

It would be nice if you could select some of the Ai-Protect options that don’t seem like a privacy violation.

I haven’t tried setting it up with ai-mesh, instead I used a moca 2.5 adapter to have It hardwired, and set one SSID for all 3 wifi standards, 2.4ghz 5ghz and 6ghz.

A definite upgrade from my 10 year old time capsule set up. If your hesitant or don’t need mesh you can also buy one node or use an older Asus router for Ai mesh.
