5.0 out of 5 starsGreat Wifi Mesh for different mix of usage with 3rd band back-haul
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020
****5/30/2020 update review: New FW added QoS on the app for easy settings for priorities. Due to shelter in place, WFH has change my ways using the network. I love the new features that I can prioritize meeting calls over network on daytime and switch back to normal use for the family at night time, given I already have fast internet but that quick QoS changes do matters. I also added more cameras as the mesh reaches more places now. Working well for me still

***Update review 3/20/20: New FW released for both GT-5300 and Zenwifi made mesh more stable on 3rd band backhaul. Connection speed is more smooth and faster on transfers.***

I had been looking and studying Mesh technology for the past 2 years as my main router cannot provide stable speed to some of my devices on certain location. Google Wifi is one of my first pick. However, Google mesh cannot manually split the bands in diff SSID which will cause incompatibility to some of my smart devices at home. Then out of no where ZenWifi got announced, which in my surprise can mesh into my GT-AC5300. This is a big plus for me as it also can take advantage of the 3rd band for dedicated back-haul.

My usage at home is consist of 2x NAS, 2x diff sets security cameras, plus more than 15 diff mixed devices. Took me a while to get the proper location set on the ZenWifi to balance coverage as my main router is positioned on end of the lower house. I also run full 7 days to test them all out.
Pros:
- Can mesh to my existing Asus GT-AC5300.
- App is a breeze to use and easy to setup (Android based user).
- Each of the ZenWifi has full function of router including LAN ports I utilized.
- FW can be updated thru app.
- PC can now transfer to NAS at 50+MB/s and up which is better than before at 15~20MB/s. Back haul plays a big role here. This is a major change for me using wireless connection to access NAS.
- Wife and Kids devices now has stable connection and can maintain network for games and TV streaming on any side of the house.
- Streaming to the NAS from any Wifi devices can now run without hiccups even from any side of the house and backyard.
- My security cameras and smart devices can now easily get wifi signal if i reboot them.

Cons:
- Power connector orientation blocks power switch. It does not affect function but just inconvenience to power-cycle the router.
- It takes a while to finish booting before you can use on each power cycle on the ZenWifi, so far it minimal impact my usage as I don't usually reboot my routers.

2.0 out of 5 starsConstantly had to relink the node - then it died completely after 6 months use
Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2020
This is a pretty poor quality mesh system. I set up the two pack and had to retrieve the remote node often and bring it within a few feet of the main unit to reconnect it then set it back to its position in the house to create the mesh network. This was a constant headache. Not to mention that it would have very low connection speeds and often times users near the node could not connect at all. This got very tedious and then after less than 6 month's use, the node died completely. I had to send it back to ASUS at my expense for an RMA (they don't pay shipping) and ASUS could not repair it but offered me a cheaper model. I refused. We shall see where this goes, but I just wanted to warn potential buyers to beware that this product is of poor quality and you are taking your chances.

The ZenWifi AC has definitely improved the coverage and reliability of my Wi-Fi.

Due to the layout of my home, my old traditional router had to be tucked away in a closet near the hub that passed ethernet connections to the outlets of the various rooms. This positioning greatly affected the range and speed of the 5Ghz band. The old router also needed to be reset several times a week and sometimes even multiple times in a single day.

With the ZenWifi mesh system, I placed the second node out in the living room. Range became a non-issue and I typically get about 80-90% of available bandwidth using wireless backhaul. This is good enough for me to not use wired backhaul, but it's still a welcome feature to have just in case.

Using the app to watch traffic to/from nodes showed that switching between nodes generally takes a minute or two switch. The coverage between both nodes is good enough that there haven't been any real world performance hits.

Setup with the app was stupid easy. The hardest and longest part of the process was picking a new network name and password.

I appreciate this design that does away with ugly antennas sticking out everywhere as well as the small footprint. It's about as tall and thick as a Google Home but is a bit wider (see pictures).

Overall, I have been very pleased with the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong signal in a problematic structure! VERY HAPPY
Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020

Once I got these routers set up as a AiMesh system I am thrilled. The installation and setup information was nearly useless with crucial information left off that resulted in my spending 10 hours and contacting a few IT people for help or suggestions. Apparently, you have to download both the phone app and a computer program to get into the routers and assign one to be a router specifically. Otherwise, they both connected as nodes automatically, which left no router sending any signal. Frustrating! I literally stumbled my way into figuring it out. In the end I am extremely happy with is AiMesh system. I have a condo described as a "bunker with windows" due to the steel, glass, and reinforced concrete construction. I have horrible trouble getting any signals to pass even room to room and forget upstairs. I was doubtful this system would do any better than what I have tried and what my internet provider has tried over 12 years. HOWEVER, this system is perfect (once set up) and just these two routers have replaced the very poor signal of four separate hardwired in routers in separate rooms. I have gone from 5-20Mbps in the upstairs to 250Kbps minimum in every corner of the 1900 square feet on BOTH floors!! I used picture hanging velcro and attached each router to the wall near the ceilings. I use a cable channel inside the wall to run the power and ethernet cords up to the routers so they aren't hanging down the walls looking junky. With four people at home using WiFi all the time, this is heaven. I highly recommend these as an AiMesh system, but do yourself a favor and install the computer program to set up the router controls, then make one specifically a router, before you start the setup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Coverage For House With Many Walls
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020
Style: ZenWiFi AC Charcoal 2PKVerified Purchase
I live in a house which is shared with tenants in the front part of the house. I originally was using the TP Link standalone router, but since the house has many walls, the internet is very weak in the front of the house and not very stable. After many complaints from the tenants about unable internet due to the size of the house and having 8 people sharing one router, I decided to look for a router solution that can solve the unstable internet issue. I came across the ASUS Mesh WiFi system and decided to try this router out due to price and function that I was looking for.

The set up was somewhat simple based on the instructions provided. One thing to note is the routers needed firmware updates when I got them set up. It took around 3-5 minutes for each of the routers to update where it will restart. I would say one confusing aspect was the one LED indicator light. Through the process, I've seen a green light, white light, and a red light. Some times the light would flash. There doesn’t seem to be any documentation about what status those colors indicate. Also, I was not a fan of the need to download an app to set up my router. But after playing around with the app interface, it’s actually pretty convenient. I am able to control each person’s usage so they don't hog all the internet. I ran a speed test after setting up the new router and the download speeds are twice the speed compared to my old router. So far, I have been testing the routers for 2 weeks now and it’s being doing pretty well. Internet for both the front and back of the house has been stable. However, I think I need to move the Mesh router to another location since most of the devices keep jumping around between routers when accessing the internet in the front of the house.

Overall, this is a good router from my experience so far. Much better than what I was putting up with before with my original router.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised

General: This zenWiFi system just works... finally something that doesn’t need so much time spent setting up and maintaining... the signal strength across the house is strong. I love being able to LAN 3 devices to each node. I can block access to devices at will. I can share access to friends and family who stop by with a text message or a QR code from the app it’s amazing!!

App: The app is pretty user friendly overall, I mean it can do a lot and I’m by no means a master of everything it can do yet... but overall this has been a great product. I have Comcast xfinity at 200mbps so that’s my real limiter otherwise I probably would have splurged for the WiFi6 version of the ASUS zenWiFi system... but until GB internet plans become more affordable and this ridiculous 1TB per month thing goes away I just don’t see the need to be that future proof for the time being...

style: I also got to add that the actual routers themselves just look nice and subtle. I was looking for something that wasn’t going to stick out like a sore thumb if I set it on my TV stand in the family room.

5.0 out of 5 stars The way home WiFi should be

We have been using a Netgear WiFi extender for years in our under 2,000 sq ft home. There were about 4 network names and passcodes. I was constantly changing the network to get the fastest one on my iPhone or Mac. I never heard of Mesh until the Covid-19 kept everybody working at home. I read of the frustration of working on slow WiFi and the solution...Mesh. I researched Mesh systems on CNET and determined that the ASUS ZenWifi AX was the one except for the price tag...$450! The AC may be older technology, but the price was in our budget. Easy installation. Now there's one network throughout the house. Speedtest shows 316 to 638 Mbps download and 18 - 40 upload. Incredible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fixed all my internet issues!

I purchased this Zenwifi a couple of weeks ago and have been testing it out before sharing with my take. I’ve tried various routers including extenders and still struggled with unstable connections. I constantly experience internet connection issues downstairs, 3-floor townhouse, as our modem was connected upstairs and there are lots of walls where the signal could be lost. First, I was skeptical that only two units could take care of my internet issues (a router and node) but was surprised when both LED lights shined white (strong good connection). I even connected my parents internet to the regular connection (you could set up a regular and a 5G connection separate) and even though they are downstairs, their signal is very strong. Even on a different floor, streaming Netflix and YouTube is quick with no disruptions and Facetime is smooth with no lag. I’m very happy with its performance and would recommend to anyone looking to improve their internet connection.

Setting up was easy too – I’m not a very technical person. It only took me a few minutes to get the system rolling and the app that runs it is an interesting little tool. Relocating the node to a better spot and having it reconnect was quite easy as well. I was able to configure everything through my phone and can manage the connections on my phone from anywhere in the house. I especially like being able to see all connected devices on the network and the ability to control access to individual machines; I can see this as a very useful tool to limit screen time with my littles!!

The ZenWIFI packaging looks solid and very premium. The two ASUS routers doesn't come with rabbit ear antenna. Its two router with power supply and a Ethernet cable. The installation is very simple. Plug the router into power outlet and one router into the modem via ethernet. I install the ASUS app on my phone and follow the guide step by step until completion. Within 10 minutes the setup is done, I am enjoying my new router without any headache. The ASUS Aimesh is a solid wireless range extender that boost my signal across my bedroom without running a wire through the house. ZenWIFI is a solid product that combine easy setup with Aimesh range extension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ludicrous Speed!
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020

My house has pretty thick walls, and the Asus RT-68U was almost good enough to hit every corner, except for one room. I decided to pull the trigger on the new Zenwifi because I am a big fan of Asus routers (with their included lifetime updates and security) so I decided to buy this one. Oh man I did not expect such a difference. I specifically appreciated that it has a separate 5ghz backbone too. While everything used to be connected via 2.4 ghz, now every device in my house is using 5ghz (those that support it anyway). I went from 150 up/down to 500 up/down. This router allowed me to release the full potential of my fiber connection with AT&T. I've only had it for 2 months or so, but I'll update here if anything goes wrong with it. So far it's perfect.
