4.0 out of 5 starsIf you are on the fence… Please read.
Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021
Before ordering this one I already an echo show 8”, first gen. I was about to buy another one when I got an add saying that I could pre-order a second gen. I could not find a good comparison anywhere so I asked myself, should I pay 20$ more for an unknown. I did and spoiler alert, it is worth it, kinda.

Positives:

- The new camera features are great. The camera can track you and center you for video calls, real time, and it does it accurately.
- Speaking of the camera, the camera upgrade is insane. Went from 1MP to 13MP.
- The processor is supposed to be much more powerful. Looking at the new camera features, understanding where you are in a group of people and tracking you accordingly, it is noticeable. However, given that a lot of the actions on the device are web based, there is not a huge difference on other apps. The responsiveness of the touchscreen is perhaps a bit better but it was good to begin with.
- The unit will go to low power mode when idle, helping you save a penny here and there…
- Several privacy features. The stop listening button we have grown used to. The camera can be manually closed shut for privacy. When remote viewing through the show, there is a warning message, etc...

Negatives:

- Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. Just like with the Show 10”, the power cord is white for every unit, whether the unit is black or white. The camera shutter, is white too.
- The 3.5 jack is gone.

Other thoughts:

The sound quality___

One of the items on my wish list for this one was an improved audio quality. The sound quality improved over the previous gen, I think, but I would say its marginal if that, not enough to even be sure it did.

The white cord___

What I hate the most about my Echo Show 10 is the white cord on a black unit. Since I fell for it with the Show 10 and white would go well with my decor, I preemptively went for a white unit, to eliminate the eyesore, in case Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. To a certain extent, I was secretly hoping the cord would be black so I could swap it with my Show 10” and fix two problems with one move. Nope, its white.

Even with a warning from me that it could happen, a friend went for the charcoal one and he is still fuming. So, if you are like me that the white cord on a black unit would drive you crazy, and you are going for it, order the white one.

The environment___

If you are still on the fence about this one, be aware that 2nd gen uses recycled materials on its manufacturing. To me this is a selling point.
_____________________________
TLDR,
1) If you use it a lot for video calls, the improved camera and improved camera features, makes it a worthy upgrade. If this is not your cup of tea, waiting for a prime day sale on a previous gen might be better.
2) If having a white cord on a black unit is something that would drive you crazy, get the white one or go for the previous gen.

3.0 out of 5 starsClock display size not adjustable
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021
The display is great and I'm sure the rest of it is fine for video calling and other uses, but I didn't get to the point of trying out other features. As I set up my new Echo Show 8 I discovered that the clock time display size cannot be adjusted. Seriously, my Echo Show 5 allows me to increase the size of the time display, I assumed the Echo Show 8 would as well. I primarily use my Show as a clock that also answers questions, answers to voice commands, does video calling, etc... I wanted the larger screen for a larger clock, major fail to exclude this feature. I gave 3 stars because it looks nice and was easy to set up, but I can't use it because you removed an existing feature from the Echo Show product line. Major UI FAIL.

3.0 out of 5 stars Honestly a bit disappointed. I was expecting more

I sort of purchased this on a whim to see if I could fit it into my life somehow. I found the idea of a smart display intriguing as I already have 2 Fire Cubes and absolutely love them. However a Fire cube this is not. It's difficult to express but this thing is cumbersome to use and it's slow. For example. I was eating dinner and watching a video I purchased on Prime video. I had to pause it to get up and do something so I said "echo pause" Wich it did. When I returned the screen had defaulted back to the time home screen. No big deal right? So I said "echo play" and instead of resuming my show, it resumed a song I had paused earlier that day. I asked it to stop and then asked for it to play my show. It began to play a different episode and not where I left off. Getting it back to where I left off required more awkward voice control and touching the screen. Very annoying when I'm trying to eat my meal. This device also has trouble understanding my queries. It's getting my words incorrect. One feature I was pleasently surprised by was the sound quality. It is very good. The low end is impressive. Almost as good as my Nest Audio. Maybe with some software updates this device Will be good. But for now I'm still trying to understand it's intended flow.

Amazon missed the boat with the new versions of the ECHO by not continuing a voice controlled remote option. All previous versions (before the SHOW) could be controlled with a whisper into the remote from anywhere. Things like: On/Off, Volume, change tracks on an album, ask for the weather, etc.. It didn't even matter if you were playing loud music or had other sounds around it. I confirmed this issue with an Amazon support technician. We both tried work-around's but nothing worked. Now I'm trying to decide to send it back and hope some future ECHO will support the Voice Remote.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware of Advertised Features
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2021

We purchased this Echo 8 2nd Gen, in addition to a Show 10, so we could do live view in our home and travel trailer (like a security camera) while we are both at work to monitor a disabled relative without using Drop In. Despite the fact that this feature is well advertised in the descriptions, Amazon knows it doesn't work. There are instructions how to set it up, but when you use the Alexa app to use the feature it displays "Live view not supported." Yet the Live View works perfectly on the Show 10, for twice the price. Also, don't be fooled by the advertised ability to display your pictures all of the time, or even one of the available wallpapers on the device; that doesn't work either. Instead, you get Amazon and Alexa advertisements, news, "About Your Day", etc. every third screen 24/7. This is Amazon's latest feature on ALL Echo Show devices and it cannot be turned off! This has to be the most annoying feature ever. I'm pretty annoyed that I cannot use the Echo 8 for the purpose it was intended and have to be subjected to continuous uninteresting information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice device spoiled by terrible software
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2021
Color: Glacier WhiteConfiguration: Device OnlyVerified Purchase
I bought this version after it was reduced during one of Amazon’s Prime Days. Having tried a Show device before (a Show 5) which I returned after I could not get it to show the time without interruption by completely irrelevant messages from Amazon, I decided to try again, after I bought another Show 5 and the software allowed me to get an acceptable home screen (even though they still refuse to put large clocks numerals on any background).

The Show 8 is a very nicely made and finished device. The quality of the materials and controls are excellent. The screen is a very nice and is a high quality display with reasonable viewing angles. The camera is more than adequate (if you use it or can get it to work). I bought mine in white which had a matching power cable and supply (unlike the black which, according to reports but which I cannot verify, uses the same white power supply and cable). All in all a nice package that feels like a hight quality device.

The unboxing experience is good (I think Apple are the reason that unboxing these days is a better experience) and setting up the device is very very simple. The device comes registered to your account and Amazon make the whole setup very easy. Well designed and thoughtfully worked out. I am not sure how much more difficult it would be to reset and allocate to a different account, but accessing setup and the configuration process looks straightforward.

Once you have set up the device, you can configure it to your personal likes and I immediately turned off all those screen interruptions so that, in its home state, I get the time only with a background. Selecting that background is where my issues start and which I will discuss later. Voice commands are quick and Alexa displays the results on the screen as well as speaking them. I think you can stop that behavior if you do not like it, but I left it set that way.

Now to some of the issues I encountered. Because I have an English accent, I set the language to English (UK) so Alexa understands me more easily and I get a warning that some functions may not work. I have no idea what that means or what is affected but I know that when it gives me notifications about Amazon deliveries it warns me that you can not place orders with Amazon. I never use this function so it does not worry me, but it seems to be a strange limitation (if it is a limitation as I never use it). It appears not to have this limitation if you set it to and speak Spanish or US English, of course.

The other issue is that it advertises that you can display your photos. What it does not tell you is that it can only display photos if they are upload to Amazon Photos, for which you need a Prime account, and pay for storage if you have more that 5GB of videos. I use Adobe Lightroom and Apple Photos, so I was forced to try and copy them to Amazon Photos which is a mind bogglingly slow process and bug prone process (Amazon Photos crashed several times during the upload process). Then came trying to show them on the Show. In order to do this you have to create Collections of which there is not a single mention in Photos except when you need to have one to display on your Show. There are some defaults such as Groups, People and Places which Amazon Photos creates, but there are no directions about Collections. Funnily it created a Collection called Most recent 500, but how I create it again is a mystery (I since discovered you can create it via the Alexa app, not via Amazon Photos). Anyway the bottom line is that I was not prepared to learn, curate or anything else in Amazon Photos as I have perfectly capable Photo management software elsewhere and the lack of support for anything other than Amazon Photos is a killer, so that beautiful screen displays nothing but Art.

The Echo Show 8 is a great piece of hardware spoiled by restrictive and badly designed software, but, as an Echo device with visual prompting it is rather nice. Sound quality is good and adequate (I have Apple Homepods for higher quality sound but the Echo Show 8 is still pleasant and acceptable). We never use the video calling (most of our friends use Apple’s FT and do not have a video Echo device) and it does not appear to support Zoom or Teams etc. The camera is good quality but, again, we do not use it and I cannot get the Alexa app to show live video from the Show 8 (buggy software) which makes it pointless so we shut the camera off.

Recommended with strong caveats.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had it one hour, already hate it

This thing...

Okay, so first of all, we have Alexa profiles. One exists for placing orders but we never use it with Alexa. Trying to set this thing up without being signed in to that profile I never use messed up the process, as did the two separate updates required.

I went through the Alexa setup as patiently as possible, but it wouldn't connect to the app because of the profile thing. I can't show photos on it, probably also because of the profile thing, even though I've uploaded photos through both Alexa and photos apps.

It has been a long time since I've been this frustrated this quickly.

I don't see a way to access skills easily in the menus, it's all voice control, so why is there a screen? Oh, for playing video. Except that's really difficult to do. I selected one video in prime and it played another one. It's so frustrating. I cursed at Alexa for the first time today.

The sound is really good, but I could connect a tablet to a regular Echo and get good sound and a screen that doesn't make me hate everything Amazon ever did. The whole point of getting something in this ecosystem is so it will be easy, but this is just a nice speaker with a frustrating UI on a mediocre screen.

Edit: I got a call from customer service about an hour after posting this review, which is either cool or creepy depending on your mood. They offered to help but I told them I needed a break. When I chatted with them the next day the photo issue was fixed by re-registering the show.

The speaker is quieter than the big Echo 4th gen, but at least as good.

The thing is still frustrating. It's not great at playing in its group and the UI could be way better, but I'm keeping it for the speaker and photo frame, and because the spouse thinks it's neat.

3.0 out of 5 stars No real upgrade from last version, and a BIG downgrade in that there's no sound port.

Got this to replace an older one. No issues with it, I just like the latest & greatest, and planned to pass the old one off to someone who might otherwise never know the joys of Alexa.
I have a nice set of speakers plugged into my Alexa (two of the three I own, actually, not counting this one). But when I pulled this out and started setting it up, I found that this new & "improved" version doesn't have a sound port to plug into! Bad call!
I was going to return it, but as it happens, an elderly friend of mine who's eyesight is going had a birthday recently (80-something), so I passed it along to her. Note, the built-in speaker is quite good. But my stereo setup is just a lot better when kicking back to enjoy some tunes.
Anyway, she loves being able to interact without having to use a magnifying glass or anything, so it all worked out well. She's one of those people who has difficulty with computers, but Alexa and her get along just fine. Eventually we may even get her some control devices!

The product itself is great until the echo show starts showing ads randomly randomly while cycling through photos, even though all of the other home content options are turned off. Also, you can't turn off Alexa for your day screen. If I keep seeing the device altering what I want to see on it's own, I'll return it and give 1 star. Stop being stupid, Amazon. You have a good product. No one needs alexa for your day and stop throwing ads in my photo cycle. As I am writing another like Bryan ad pops up on my show. I'm losing patience.

3.0 out of 5 stars The screen goes to sleep when I have a countdown timer, recipe etc.
Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021

I bought this echo show to control my smart home items. I also have the google equal to this machine which I have owned for about 3 years. I am getting used to the way Alexia access information that is somewhat different to Google. I can't say one is better over the other, just different. My complaint is with the echo show and the way it goes to sleep inappropriately. When I have a countdown timer on the machine (I use it for workout) the timer will not stay on screen. After a few seconds it is only displayed in a tiny section of the upper corner then the machine goes to sleep so nothing is visible. The Show also goes to sleep when trying to use a recipe. It is annoying to have to constantly wake it up. In contrast, the Google machine leaves my timer full screen until it ends. I can see it from a distance.

During my research for a fix, I see that this sleep problem has a lot of complaints and no solutions found.

I had to buy this to replace my other Echo Show 8 that only lasted a year before the software bricked itself somehow. They don't cover it after a year and it was a week past that when it happened. If I hadn't bought my sister and parents one for Xhristmas last year, so we can video chat. I would have passed on getting a new one.

This one has a camera that can follow you around d which is kinda cool bit if you're up close to it it still looks way zoomed out for some reason.

Has pluses and minuses bit it would be nice if they would cover it more due to their own software messing it up.
