Before ordering this one I already an echo show 8”, first gen. I was about to buy another one when I got an add saying that I could pre-order a second gen. I could not find a good comparison anywhere so I asked myself, should I pay 20$ more for an unknown. I did and spoiler alert, it is worth it, kinda.

Positives:

- The new camera features are great. The camera can track you and center you for video calls, real time, and it does it accurately.
- Speaking of the camera, the camera upgrade is insane. Went from 1MP to 13MP.
- The processor is supposed to be much more powerful. Looking at the new camera features, understanding where you are in a group of people and tracking you accordingly, it is noticeable. However, given that a lot of the actions on the device are web based, there is not a huge difference on other apps. The responsiveness of the touchscreen is perhaps a bit better but it was good to begin with.
- The unit will go to low power mode when idle, helping you save a penny here and there…
- Several privacy features. The stop listening button we have grown used to. The camera can be manually closed shut for privacy. When remote viewing through the show, there is a warning message, etc...

Negatives:

- Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. Just like with the Show 10”, the power cord is white for every unit, whether the unit is black or white. The camera shutter, is white too.
- The 3.5 jack is gone.

Other thoughts:

The sound quality___

One of the items on my wish list for this one was an improved audio quality. The sound quality improved over the previous gen, I think, but I would say its marginal if that, not enough to even be sure it did.

The white cord___

What I hate the most about my Echo Show 10 is the white cord on a black unit. Since I fell for it with the Show 10 and white would go well with my decor, I preemptively went for a white unit, to eliminate the eyesore, in case Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. To a certain extent, I was secretly hoping the cord would be black so I could swap it with my Show 10” and fix two problems with one move. Nope, its white.

Even with a warning from me that it could happen, a friend went for the charcoal one and he is still fuming. So, if you are like me that the white cord on a black unit would drive you crazy, and you are going for it, order the white one.

The environment___

If you are still on the fence about this one, be aware that 2nd gen uses recycled materials on its manufacturing. To me this is a selling point.
_____________________________
TLDR,
1) If you use it a lot for video calls, the improved camera and improved camera features, makes it a worthy upgrade. If this is not your cup of tea, waiting for a prime day sale on a previous gen might be better.
2) If having a white cord on a black unit is something that would drive you crazy, get the white one or go for the previous gen.

3.0 out of 5 starsClock display size not adjustable
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021
The display is great and I'm sure the rest of it is fine for video calling and other uses, but I didn't get to the point of trying out other features. As I set up my new Echo Show 8 I discovered that the clock time display size cannot be adjusted. Seriously, my Echo Show 5 allows me to increase the size of the time display, I assumed the Echo Show 8 would as well. I primarily use my Show as a clock that also answers questions, answers to voice commands, does video calling, etc... I wanted the larger screen for a larger clock, major fail to exclude this feature. I gave 3 stars because it looks nice and was easy to set up, but I can't use it because you removed an existing feature from the Echo Show product line. Major UI FAIL.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice product, once it's customized
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021
Color: CharcoalConfiguration: Device OnlyVerified Purchase
My previous smart display experience was with a Google display, although Alexa is our main smart assistant in our household. Since we generally use Alexa for smart home and other home assistant tasks, I decided to give the echo show a try. I already use Prime Photos to back-up from my phone, so right away I have a lot of photos on rotation. My Google smart display does a nicer job choosing photos, focusing mostly on pictures with people in them rather than the random price tag I photographed because I wanted to remember it when I got home. Google's photo display also does a nice job combining photos, which Amazon doesn't seem to do. My other complaint from the standpoint of the default behavior is that lots of garbage I don't want (skill recommendations, trending news stories, etc.) are turned on by default, so it took a lot of customization to get it to use mostly photos and not recommendations for things I don't care about. Once it's customized, it's pretty good.

I haven't tried the video calling feature, since my family uses Google Duo for video calls and none of them have Echo Show devices. If enough of the people you want to video call have Echo Shows, maybe this is a good option for you. I feel like Duo, FaceTime, or something else phone-based will always be more ubiquitous though, so I can't imagine using it very often.

Alexa works as expected. I have a Ring doorbell, so I like having easy access to it from the display. The camera slider is crucial and I wouldn't have bought this display without it. It's a good product, but I do feel a bit like I just paid money to Amazon for a product that's main goal is to advertise to me, rather than to be a utility. From that regard, the Google/Nest displays seem to be a better product in general.

How good this product is will depend a lot on how you want to use it. If you want it mostly to have photos on rotation, a Google/Nest display does a better job. If you want to control smart devices it does a good job and if you use Ring devices it's probably your best option. If you're in the Nest ecosystem rather than Ring, you're probably better off with a Google/Nest display.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got a weird yellow tint to your screen? (or any color) .. Solution.

if your screen has some weird tint, you don't have a busted screen.
>Swipe down from the top
>Settings icon

>toggle off Adaptive Color

Somebody thought it would be neat if the echo show 8 mimicked the colors in it's environment, somehow making the images seem more natural?? Nope, made mine look like the screen was busted. Also there's no Yellow in my room of mostly red and white. Once turned off the image is clean and clear.

Also, some kind of Tilt base needs to be built in. The default angles are NEVER useful, and each device I have is propped or wedged forward to sometimes great degrees. Tilt is a basic feature of almost any freestanding screen device.

I could definitely do with LESS cloth on these devices. It's a pointless dust magnet, and harder to clean. Seems to be trending on assistants.

Otherwise, I like it.

Very easy to set up upon receipt. Graphics are much improved over previous edition. Sound is very clear and nice. Very much worth upgrading to the new model.
Only comment would be that the stand should be included with the device, and the power cord could perhaps be at least another 6 inches in length.

4.0 out of 5 stars Echo Show 8 (2nd gen) vs Google Nest Hub (1st gen)
Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021
Color: Glacier WhiteConfiguration: Device OnlyVerified Purchase
Original review:

This is rather long, so a summary:

My only complaint is that the screen has a VERY FAINT green tint, when compared to feeding the same video to several TVs (all different brands) that I own. Yes, automatic adjustment to ambient light is turned off. Since I didn't buy the Echo Show for video purity, this isn't a big deal, but it is noticeable in a side-by-side comparison, day or night.

I find the constant nagging to do this or that, very annoying. I call it the "diaper patrol", following me around offering inane suggestions. After setup, how about leaving me alone? This is not limited to Amazon or Microsoft or Google; it's everywhere: Watch your local news when they do the weather, with the infantile recommendations to wear appropriate clothing. OK, this is a "thing" with me. The suggestions on the Google Nest Hub are even more infantile. Are we (as a society) so stupid, that we need this? (Don't answer that).

You need to know that both the Amazon & Google products of this type are by no means general-purpose tablets; they are much more like Kiosks in an airport that let you do very specific things, & that's it. No installing Android apps. Google's Nest Hubs are locked down tight: If Google didn't think of it AND APPROVE IT, you can't do it. There is no keyboard, so even going to a specific web site is a difficult task. Google apparently has a pre-release update that adds a keyboard, but that was last June & I'm on the pre-release list, & no keyboard yet. Ugh. Google can't allow the smartphone keyboard to be used?

The Echo Show is quite a bit more flexible. There is a browser & an on-screen keyboard, which in limited testing seems to do OK; you can easily watch YouTube videos by saying (eg), "Alexa, show Scheherazade on YouTube", & then with a single tap select the version of Scheherazade that you want to watch (this works the same way on Google Nest Hubs). This is enough of a reason to buy the Echo Show, as Amazon seems more interested in providing compatibility with other products. This of course is the difference between a company that makes stuff to sell, & a company that sells stuff for no other reason than to collect data on you. Plus, in my experience with Google, they show little interest in updating the firmware in their hardware products to provide new capabilities.

There is one thing that is VERY ANNOYING about both products: If you are watching a live stream (eg, YouTube) & you say "Alexa [or Hey, Google"], turn off kitchen lights", Alexa [or Google] will TERMINATE displaying the video, turn off the lights, & then display a graphic of a switch with a "kitchen" label, so you can turn the switch back on or off (at least Alexa has an option to disable verbally telling you, what you just asked it to do).

I submit to you, this is the HEIGHT OF STUPIDITY !!! In my opinion, it's more of the infantile approach of so much "let me help you" software. Arrgghh! The workaround I use, it that I have a Google Nest Mini next to the Echo Show, to allow me to issue commands that don't INTERRUPT WHAT I AM DOING on the Echo Show. When I used a Google Nest Hub for streaming, I had an Echo Dot next to the Nest Hub, for the same purpose. The ironic thing is that Amazon & Google DON'T interrupt a live feed, IF you give them a verbal command that invokes a "routine."

In summary, you need to check carefully between the Google & Amazon products, & make sure it will do what you want, if it is not on the "approved" list. In my opinion, the choice is clear: While voice recognition is better on the Google product, the Amazon product is better overall.

Now to my specific reason for buying this: Two years ago, I bought a Google Nest Hello video doorbell. While you can monitor the live video in the Nest apps on your phone & computer, I thought it would be much better to monitor the video on a small, dedicated screen, so I bought a Google Nest Hub. I hated much of it (for the reasons stated above), but it did EXACTLY what I bought it for (& allowed me to interact with any visitors via audio, just like I can do with my smartphone), so I bought a couple more.

Given Google's recent changes in their video storage subscription service, I decided to look elsewhere for a better service & doorbell. I settled on the Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell, with video storage on a local drive rather than in the cloud. It's a $700 investment, but no subscription. It has much better video features. You can stream live video to your smartphone and/or computer via web page, & that is very flexible. Alas, Ubiquiti has no corresponding dedicated video display of their own. However, you can stream their live video feed to any device or program that supports RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol), like VLC.

It turns out that the Echo Show supports streaming from any camera that supports RTSP. In the case of most 3rd party cameras (including the Ubiquiti Doorbell), you do have to load an Alexa skill named "Monocle". Once you do that, the Echo Show displays the live video (& sound) from my Ubiquiti Doorbell.

--------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE #1:

As I noted, I bought two new Echo Show 8 (2nd gen) because they could RELIABLY stream my doorbell camera (Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell, using an Alexa skill). Over the November 13-14 (2021) weekend, Amazon updated the firmware in both Echo Shows. Now, they can NOT RELIABLY stream the doorbell camera! When streaming the doorbell (which has a timestamp in the image), the Echo Shows VERY QUICKLY fall behind 10-20 minutes.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED except the Amazon Echo Show firmware update!!! Meanwhile, streaming the doorbell on a PC using VLC continues to work flawlessly, with no delays.

This is part of a pattern at Amazon, of breaking previously working code. I also experience this on my AWS account, where working code in CloudWatch has been broken in at least 2 cases by updates.

Has Amazon heard of "regression testing"??? I was a software developer for 45 years before I retired, & I'm APPALLED at the current lack of adequate testing in the software industry.

--------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE #2:

Amazon did contact me by phone about my updated review, & has forwarded my report to the development staff. However, given my experiences with Amazon software, I decided to buy a couple of "Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite" tablets at Costco for less than the Echo Shows. The Samsung tablets can stream the doorbell using the native Ubiquiti Android app, which also has no delay. Plus, the tablets have other features, like having a battery & thus being portable.

I've returned the Echo Shows to Amazon. New ones are out of stock until February, so maybe this will enable someone to get mine before Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally joined the bandwagon

Finally joined the bandwagon and went all out to create a "smart home". I was anti-Alexa, but more-so just too much technology. I don't like using my phone for the Ring doorbell, so started researching and see this is a good hub for smart-home devices. I purchased when on sale, Black Friday. I am still learning how to integrate everything but it's coming along.

My home overview:
✔️I got this one, the Show 8 (2st gen) for the kitchen to go with Ring doorbell.
✔️I got a Kids Show 5 for my 9-year-old son.
✔️I got the Show 8 (1st gen) for my 13-year-old daughter who asked for a digital picture frame. I think this is the same plus way more for a lot cheaper!
✔️Purchased another Show 8 for my in-laws that came w/ the $5 blink camera so they could monitor their business and face-time w/ us.
✔️I am currently recruiting everyone I know to buy one so that we can hang out together on calls.

User Experience:
✔️Connected devices to each-other.
-drop in to room.
-I like that I can control the camera & listening.

✔️Apple Music & Amazon Music sound good!
❌-but unable to get music profiles to sync easily. I like my daughters Amazon Music but can't get it to play on the kitchen device.

✔️Pictures works great!
✔️Like the "dinner-bell telling kids to come down. I am working on not yelling and this is helping! 😂

❌Profiles are not user-friendly.
-I am having a hard time w/ configuring our individual amazon accounts/profiles, and maintaining the settings on each device.
-Knowing the "keywords" to say to get Alexa to function to her full potential. I guess that will come with time, use and research.

📷I shop based off images and like to see how products look inside the home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Streaming Apps, no full versions.
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2021
Color: CharcoalConfiguration: Device OnlyVerified Purchase
I got this echo because I was curious about the Streaming feature. Sometimes I am cooking or doing something in the kitchen, or somewhere else and it is good to have access to some shows and programs that you have been watching on your main TV. But the fact that Prime, Netflix, and Hulu apps are not accessing all the programs that you have access to on your TV is a kind of step back. The screen is big enough and clear, you can control the brightness and it works really well. Communication is fast and reliable. Many different features like slide shows with your own pictures and others are great. Voice command is really good and fast. Connection to the Network too. Work well with all the devices connected to the network. Learn fast and follow orders properly. The sound is clear and it has a strong bass feature that makes the sound interesting. If you, like me, like to keep track of your series while you are in the kitchen or somewhere else, like in a different room than the TV main room, be aware that you won't get access to all the seasons, the streaming Apps options in the device are limited. I am not sure if you can add another streaming App than the ones the Echo had installed by default. It would be great if the Echo includes a rechargeable battery option. In that way, if you move the Echo to another room or outside you do not need to use the power cable and start looking for an outlet to connect it. I think it is better than the regular echo speaker and the previous echo model since you can access some streaming App, even if they are not in the full versions with all the movie and series options that you get in your Smart TV or using a streaming device connected to your TV. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall I like it, but it is not for everyone.
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2021
Color: CharcoalConfiguration: Device OnlyVerified Purchase
I'll start by saying that I had a previous model and liked it enough to buy the new model as an upgrade.

Overall I'm very happy with it and even bought one for my parents who are in their late 70s and late 90s. Hopefully they can use some of it occasionally without messing things up.

So the screen is very nice and more responsive than my previous model (the echo show 10 2nd gen.) It's nice to display my personal photos like a picture frame. And I like the display of weather. I just wish you could resize the clock and date if you wanted. But the only options to do that are not useful. My parents are older and it's hard to see the date above the time. We need more permanent options. Heck even I sometimes can't read the date.

Also the camera is higher quality than the previous one which is nice, and I like the privacy slider option. I also like that I can view the camera in my home from the Alexa app, and I can communicate with anyone that is near the camera since you can activate the microphone to talk to them and you can hear them reply.

I have my Pandora account linked to it and also play my Amazon music through it.
I like that it shows album art when playing songs via Amazon music, and sometimes shows lyrics if in the database. Music sounds really good for being so small.

But Alexa still sometimes will not get things right that should be very easy. Like when I set a timer and the timer is up, she will tell me the timer is done and it will beep and I'll say Alexa cancel, but it glitches and the timer done still continues and she will say your time is done. This happens periodically and happened in the old one also but it was worse on that one. It can take 2 or 3 tries before it shuts up. Annoying. One time, on the old one, I had to unplug it to get it to stop.

I got the stand accessory and where I have it placed, the stand doesn't do much. I wanted to be able to tilt it downward, but it only goes so far. But it's ok I guess.

To wrap up, I'm glad I made the upgrade, but if you don't need the screen functions then just stick with the echo or dot devices. But I like gadgets, and this one is nice.

I am 100% enjoying my Echo Show 8. This is my 2nd one in the house. The drop in and announcement features are clear and the picture quality is on point. It is very reliable feature to be able to check in on your home in different rooms remotely. The commands are easy to execute. We traveled on vacation away from home and out of state and it is very cool that I can go into the Alexa app and say drop in living room or Alexa show me the living room and give it a few seconds and there it is I am viewing the room. I can pop in and see what is going on. I enjoy that I can set up various routines for all times of the day. I enjoy that I can set up the scale for eight to read prayers and Bible verses. So far I am extremely pleased with the voice recognition. Alexa integration is a great feature with my wing products it will let me know when there is motion at the door and announce it as well as I can say Alexa show me the front door. I would definitely recommend this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs more work

I must say, this Echo Show is a bit of a disappointment. Like its sisters the Echo Dots... this guy does not do too much. Ask it any question and it says... "I do not know that" I cannot do that? And it is really pretty useless. It is not an easy set up - meaning, to find things on it... to ask it to open You Tube... or Amazon shopping for goodness sakes... it is a whole huge affair.... they need to reprogram this guy...like the DOT, they need work.
THe only use for this we have is asking her the weather... that she can often manage to give us. And we have some Kasa cameras and we can ask her to show us a room... most of the time she gets and we can then watch the housekeeper... but...even with that...the screen goes back to playing the pictures... while we are in middle of watching the camera and we have to tell her again to show us the "bedroom camera".
VERY FRUSTRATING and honestly... we never keep it on. Bought it for the convenience of just being able to watch the housekeeper... but she does not do much more! I send feedback all the time telling Amazon what a stupid product they have made. I hope someone gets those messages and teaches Alexa a couple of good skills.... oh yea - in my room my dot is my clock, and my alarm.... and can turn off my lights and I can hear the news... yippee! Like? This is the great Alexa? Uh uh. this is the great disappointment!
