How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsBuy this for your kid instead of the iPad, seriously
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021
This is everything I’ve wanted in a tablet for my child. He has an iPad, but has literally not used it since he got the fire. It’s perfect, here’s why.
- The battery life is great.
- The fact that it only displays downloads when we are somewhere with no wifi, saves me one million questions. (Amazon should honestly market that in the blurb.)
- The parental controls are easy and I can pick and choose which ones he can use.
- The expandable storage is so easy. He can take all the photos and videos that he wants and I won’t have to clear them out every couple of weeks to make more room.
- We did not download the YouTube Kids app and it’s life changing. No more bizarrely sexist videos of grown woman playing with dolls. However, we still have Blippi.
- Love having access to Kids+
- Love all of the traditional Kindle/Prime features (books, music, educational games, non-educational games)
- The kickstand is amazing and does not fall over of my child breathes on it. It’s also a great handle.

Things to note
- My child is 4 1/2
- He’s had an iPad for an embarrassing long time, so he is super comfortable using a tablet.
- We had gotten him a kindle fire 7 and just put a kids profile on it a couple years ago and this upgrade makes all the difference in the world.
- We are a kindle family, so the interface is not new or foreign to us.

Honestly, I love this over the iPad for my kid, because the iPad is not made for children. It is durable, absolutely. However, the fire is made for him and it’s laid out in a way that I know what he is watching and when he goes to download games and videos, they are appropriate.

2.0 out of 5 starsInterface is so bad
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021
We periodically get kindle fires, mostly for having a cheap tablet to download and watch movies while traveling. This is the first time we’ve gotten the kid version and the interface is just so, so, so bad.

It’s cluttered. I can’t find anything. I’m looking for tv shoes to download and the search pulls up 13 million unrelated apps, books, web videos and other junk I don’t want but I can’t find the basic show I do want.

I know it’s a cheap tablet but I’m ready to throw it out the window and pay for another iPad.

3.0 out of 5 stars What did I buy??!!
Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2021

LONG REVIEW - - I bought two of these for my kids, ages 8 & 6, for Christmas. We didn't open them until today, BIG MISTAKE!!! I would have returned them if I would have known how RIDICULOUS they are. First off the main reason we got them was because we travel quite a bit and we were going to download Netflix shows for them to watch when we didn't have wifi. Well you can't even put Netflix on the device!! I've been on a chat with someone, on Christmas, for probably over an hour. She said she believes I can download it on my profile and share it with the kids' profile but isn't sure.

Now I'm asking about books. My son was looking for a book series and couldn't find it. I tried to search for him and got the same error. I looked it up on my kindle device and it came up with no issues. I'm being told by customer service that you cannot buy books from the device! WHAT??!! She said it is because of security so they don't buy something they aren't able to buy. What are parental controls for??

This has got to be the worst Kindle ever! I wish, like I had said, that I opened them earlier so that my kids weren't attached to them. I would have sent them back! This is so frustrating! I hope Amazon actually reads these, probably not though, and sees that this setup has got to be the most inconvenient set up that I have ever heard of.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea, but its for my kid and it does its job.
Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2022

Honestly for the price i can't complain much, but the home screen is awful, theres a bunch of advertisements/ reccomended app my kid can click on and no way to remove it. I will never buy another one, but i will keep this one until it gets to be too old. No Google play store, no google browser, its just a pain in the biscuit and I really dont like it at all. There is a brightness and volume bar right on the screen and my kid always turns the brightness up to max and it drives me nuts especially at night when it shouldn't be super bright like that, and you guessed it, no way to turn it off. Of course all this is subjective, but yeah.. They need to allow us parents to FULLY CUSTOMIZE the Home Screen, i Dont want all that garbage on the home screen for my kid to click on freely, i mean whats the point of all those parental settings when the home screen just makes it pointless!! Grr!! For 100$ and the 1 year warranty Its definitely fine for now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buggy, flawed, cheap alternative.
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2021
Color: IntergalacticStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
First of all, if you simply want a tablet to let your kids watch videos and play games, then this tablet is perfectly fine.

However, if you wish to be more restrictive about how much entertainment content your kids get addicted to, and want them to read more books, then this tablet is incredibly flawed.

This tablet is extremely buggy. Restricting certain things from your kids doesn’t always work and often requires a hard reset of the tablet.

For example, you can set restrictions to force your kids to read a certain amount of time before the entertainment apps come in, however, more than often these restrictions are buggy and won’t work.

This requires you to explain to your toddler that they can’t play games right now and need to do books first. Good luck with that.

If you don’t care about how buggy it is and just want a tablet to keep your kids busy, this is fine. Just don’t expect to have full control over the content your kids get access to.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very good tablet for kids with a major flaw
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022

The content and tablet themselves are great. But there is a crucial flaw with the Amazon Kids! service itself. The Kids' profile has NO access to SD card storage. This effectively makes the expanded storage options for using microSD cards worthless if the tablet is primarily a tablet for kids. You're left with the relatively minimal internal storage for shows, movies, games etc. And your kids will fill that up FAST and come running about it.

This has been a major flaw for YEARS, constantly brought up to Amazon who apparently doesn't care.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use.

It’s difficult to use. I don’t know how to go to settings to try and see if my child can use it without wifi by using the data. I don’t even know if it has data of its own on here for her to use when we are out in public to watch her cartoons. I don’t understand how to add contacts and it won’t let me download google duo to talk to her grandma and grandpa. The video call that’s already on here is saying to go to the Alexa app to add contacts to call but there’s no Alexa app. It’s very frustrating trying to figure out how to work this tablet. Hopefully i didn’t spend hundreds on a tablet that she can’t use unless she is around wifi.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK - Always charging issues
Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021
Color: IntergalacticStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I'm prompted to write this review because once again I've had my daughter's Fire tablet (10) plugged in for a couple of hours and the battery life hasn't moved from 17%. I've switched to a third plug (first two original from Amazon) and a second cord to see if something works. Every time we've tried to charge these it goes SUPER slow if at all. Never have I seen the reported, "Fully charged from 0 to 100% in approximately 4 hours while connected to the provided (9W) adapter, while device is in standby." When they work they are OK - we had version 8 before and many of the same issues - no YouTube kids app, available content is limited, a lot of "free" games available on Amazon Kids+ are just teasers that require purchase to do more, etc. The plus side is the tablets are inexpensive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great device. Suspect "free-replacement" warranty.

This is a great little no-frills tablet. Language on the product page states, "2-year worry-free guarantee and Kid-Proof Case included. If it breaks, return it and we’ll replace it for free." Well, ours was dropped and the screen cracked. We entered the replacement process. During that time, Amazon offers to fix the item or give you and option to pay for a new replacement. I couldn't locate any details in regards to these warranty details. I find the "2-year worry-free guarantee" not as quiet as clean cut as insinuated. To get my new replacement, the fee isn't great, but is greater than $0.

3.0 out of 5 stars The kids profiles are so terrible and slow!

Buying the kid version of the Fire Tablet is pointless- the profiles are so slow and I have to put her on my profile to let her do anything at all. I am thinking of returning and getting the Samsung tablet at similar price point. We have had several Fire tablets and while it looks good and the screen quality has improved, not being able to use the kid profiles makes the device pointless. I give only 3 stars for being such a crap kids option.

3.0 out of 5 stars Glitchy
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2021
Color: IntergalacticStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I bought this a few months ago for a road trip. Worked great at first. Now it’s constantly glitching out, doesn’t properly lock the screen, gets stuck on a “kids” screen, takes a long time to respond. I’ve restarted it multiple times. Not sure what else to do. Apps can’t be rearranged on the screen in kids profile which is really annoying. Not as smooth of an experience as other tablets we own. On the plus side it was cheap, has great battery life, and has the potential to work well.

Select apps not available. Parent control is complex. Have to do some things in one area then others in another area.
