How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsI used 360 cameras a lot - hear me out!
Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021
I’ve used all types of 360 cameras and the ONEX2 is definitely becoming my favorite. What makes this different from the ONEX is that the ONEX2 is water proof, has a grippy casing, and is able to use the AI features. Compared to the ONE R, it has a more simplistic design which I prefer for a 360 camera. Also the 360 stitching is better because of the design, it won’t move or budge compared to the ONE R when using their selfie stick. The quality is awesome, when I compare to other brands nothing stands out from one another but that’s where the pricing and additional features come into play for this camera. It’s just too convenient. Quality can also drop depending where you post, social apps tend to lower quality a little, just a heads up if you see some videos and question the quality.

I saw a review about this not being waterproof which is totally false. They must’ve not close the coverings correctly or dived too deep. The box even comes with an instructions manual regarding the waterproofing.

AI features, these are fun things to try out, makes making content easy and gives you some creative direction!

The Battery life is way better than it’s older model. However I suggest taking shorter videos to not drain your battery all at once. This is what I do so I’ve never actually considered if the battery life was good or bad because it always was good. Also taking long videos can be a pain to edit.

The app is easy to use and you can make cool edits with it ALL FROM YOUR PHONE. Shameless plug but see some of my videos on IG @t4tien. Every 360 video I’ve edited has used their app on my phone!

Last, if you’re getting this camera you need to get the invisible selfie stick. It automatically stitches out, I assume you know that since you’re looking at 360 cameras but it’s a must have. ENJOY!!

1.0 out of 5 starsDoes not work out-of-the-box
Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2021
So the camera is decent - but Insta360 has become a manipulative company similar to DJI and others. The camera will not work out-of-the-box; it requires "activation" - the sole purpose of which is to get you to install the spyware app on your phone and allow Insta360 to collect your personal information.

The Insta360 One X did not require activation.

I get that most people don't care and feel that the phone app adds features - but I care and I simply don't install apps on my phone.

Don't have a phone that the app works on? The camera will not work.
Don't want to install the app? The camera will not work.
Don't consent to the EULA in the app? The camera will not work.
Don't consent to Insta360 grabbing personal info? The camera will not work.

Welcome to the world where everything is spyware, is only temporarily licensed to you and can be turned off by the seller at any time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this a good camera? It depends on you!
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2021

I gave this a meaningless 3 star rating. For me, it is a 1 star; for you, it could be a 5 star. I'm over 60 and have advanced skills in cameras, photo software, PC's, smart phones, drones, and so forth. I bought this camera because I thought it would be fun. It's not my first 360 camera which means that I had reasonable expectations.

The camera quality is 5 star; the video and photos is 4 star; the processing software - Android, Apple, or PC - is 1 star. And it is the processing software that creates the product that you want to share.

I don't have enough time in my life to deal with editing on a small screen of a smart phone, or using the very limited software on a PC. On the other hand, you might have the time and talent to do just that. To be honest, I am very impressed by the work that was done to design and build this camera. The software is almost an afterthought. You can process in Adobe Premier if you're willing to pay $21 per month for the subscription but I use other software and don't want to have to pay for Premier just for this camera.

So it depends on you. If you have a Premier subscription, this might just be what you're looking for. All the descriptions of the camera are pretty accurate. However, the results that they show are done by professionals and probably using professional software like Premier.

Finally, I'd look awful hard at the Insta360 One R action camera with interchangeable lenses. It's more money but seems to offer more options. Have fun!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Recreation Camera BUT Requires A LOT OF POST PRODUCTION time and energy...
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022
Style: StandaloneVerified Purchase
The GOOD:
This camera alone is a fun camera to use and play with. I love the fact that you can record all directions without worrying about missing a shot (but you still need to be mindful of the direction you point your camera). To get the best video quality without giving yourself or the viewer a headache you need to actually point and record with the lens facing the subject (if you're taking clips from a weird angle the video doesn't look that good.)
The battery life for the most part is pretty good considering it's supposed to be waterproof (haven't dared to test it in water yet). I find the battery outlasting the gopro and also the dji osmo action.
Price vs video quality is not bad, I would say it's very competitive with gopro and dji BUT still not as good as my phone (S22 Ultra) video quality. I mainly choose this over my phone as I wanted to have a camera that acts like a cameraman for me so as I'm doing activities this will be able to capture myself. (very capable).

Now... The CONS:
I really hate that there are no good lens protectors (well they have a premium protector that is like $50, but even that can get scratched or cracked and you're out $50) that are cost efficient and don't hurt the video quality. I've read many reviews that any lens protection available still depreciates the quality. I've opted to not get a lens protector yet but just the rubber lens cap for now. I'm extremely worried for the lens getting scratched or worse cracked. I don't see this as an action cam and the GoPros and DJI osmo action definitely has this beat as far as durability.
I do find that the camera does heat up pretty warm when recording for awhile, I haven't got any errors in regards to overheating but have had issues with the micro SD card not being able to record fast enough (even though I'm using a 128GB Sandisk Extreme 160MB/s card. The camera just ends recording and shuts down.

Video/Data Transfer to Phone & Mobile App - A HUGE NEGATIVE and

Potential Deal Breaker:
First off, the Insta360 app is a pretty decent app which allows editing to be fun and intuitive BUT... I find the process EXTREMELY frustrating, time consuming, and not efficient.

The ONLY way I currently can transfer the recorded videos from the camera (micro sd card) to my phone (S22 Ultra) is via wifi connection with the camera and only through the Insta360 app. (I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANY OTHER WORK AROUND).
I've tried via USB cable - USB C to USB C does not work (I read on forums that ONLY THE INSTA360 USB C cable will work, I haven't tried yet because it was not provided with the camera and can only be ordered through the Insta360 site for $8 + $18 shipping and tax?)
I've tried taking the micro sd card out and using a card reader - DOES NOT WORK, the app doesn't load any of the files via card reader.

I don't mind taking the time for post production editing the videos (ie adding keyframes, exporting, adding music). Took a few hours just to edit a 7 minute clip, and I still needed to import the clips into another video editing app, BUT the end product is awesome.

THE ISSUE - they advertise that you don't need to download the clips in order to edit in the app BUT if you choose not to download and edit straight from the camera you are consuming the camera battery as well as your device battery (the camera itself also gets very warm, also the video clips lag when editing).
If you decide to download the video clips from the camera to edit it TAKES FOREVER! and on top of that you still need to spend time to re-frame then export which also TAKES FOREVER! During the download and export times, your phone or device is pretty much unusable because you have to wait for the processing to complete.

If I had to reconsider my purchase this big issue would have changed my decision... Hopefully this information helps others to make up their own minds.

If Insta360 would of just provided the USB C cables (USB C to USB C) this issue probably wouldn't have been a deal breaker.

3.0 out of 5 stars As others have complained about, APP ACTIVATION IS DISGUSTING Great Camera, leave settings on AUTO
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022
Style: StandaloneVerified Purchase
I've ONLY played with it, didn't use it for any real work, but man is the APP just the worst. I'm on android, and my phone luckily supports the app and whatnot, BUT it requires access to "PHONE" aka your calls which gives them access to your logs, phone number, etc. Can't use the app if you don't activate it. Also since Android updated I think 10 and later versions, app permission names are all different from the permission names in the Insta360 app, so it's a real guess and check to see how many permissions you can leave off since, inside the app settings in "system" it truly asks for EVERYTHING; contacts, mic, camera, and the usual you expect like Storage. Also, YOU HAVE TO HAVE location on to use this app. Which has me looking for "spoofing" apps to spoof permissions turned on for security reasons. SORRY, just not in the most trusting mood with China these days, can't explain why, cough cough.

As for image after the DEMANDS it asks you for, it's not bad, though the image quality on screen is weirdly better looking than it is on my monitor. And no, it's not my PHOTO REFERENCE GRADE monitor that covers 98% of the Adobe RGB spectrum and is 500 Nits bright making it HDR500 compliant. Paid 900 for this monitor. It's not the issue. It's a neat device. Just hate the permissions it asks of you. It can perform at GoPro Max levels, and I was testing its capability in lower than desirable light. WHICH I did go into settings and adjusted the EV, ISO, Shutter and whatnot so it looked GREAT on the display, but for whatever reason, when I transferred it to the PC, looked WAY DARKER AND WORSE. HMM. Also, Insta360 likes hiding features behind "PRO" mode, like 4K60 and the 5K settings. So, if you're wondering where those resolutions are hiding, it's there.

!!!HUGE TIP/WARNING!!!
I bought this camera from AMAZON. I bought their other lineups from their site. DO NOT BUY FROM THEIR SITE, BUY FROM AMAZON. It takes forever to get to your house from China, and 90% of their items don't offer expedited shipping. Even if offered, it's disgustingly expensive like $50 to $100 per item expensive. Items come whenever and rarely together. So you might get one accessory one day and then the next month get another and after that 2 weeks for another part and so on. COMPLETE mystery as to the logic why that is.

Also, the Insta360 site tends to have worse pricing, not terribly worse, but when you factor in shipping, then it's way worse. BUT if you go free shipping. I find their site has a $50 to $100 premium to their items sometimes there's a deal, but also most of their items are RARELY kept in stock WHICH IS FRUSTRATING.

CONCLUSION

Don't buy, yes it's one of the best ones out there and can easily go toe to toe with GoPro Max, without any struggle in a better form factor which means the stitching is better, as well. BUT the whole NEEDING AN APP ON YOUR PHONE to even USE this is disgusting and annoying. THEN there's a weird anti-HDMI out this company seems to have. NONE of their cameras support it, which at the price range of these cameras is inexcusable. YOU can kind of make the argument this camera can't find room for it, fair enough. BUT their OneR cameras that are modular DEFINITELY have room for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was expecting something better

first - resolution is rather poor. Stiching far from being freat. In STANDAR-AUTO mode all my videos are overexposed (basically garbage). Company says on their site - you get free selfie stick with the CAM, but when I purchased this CMA through Amazon - NO STICK. I asked them about it in Email and they advised me to purchase it separately. Another words different policy for direct customers and different for amazon customers (even if you purchase therough Insta360 store). I DO NOT LIKE IT !
Software on PC is very, very plain and limited and mobile App is a joke ! There is no way to change CAM settings through the phone so you are always forced to use super tiny screen with tiny-winy fonts.
This CAM with the lens protector will in 90% cases produce unpleasant stiching effects. Also using long 3m Insta selfie stick does not really hide the stick (just 50-70% of it).
There is lots of hype about this CAM and most of it is created by those who get a sale commission :-(
I used to have Samsung Gear360 and it is 6+ yrs old and X2 is no better. The only advantage over Samsung is the PC app which has some more features and key-framing.

Most likely I will return it and exchange with Gopro OR alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this camera
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022

I currently have a Xioami MiSphere that I bought in 2016. It captures still images very well and is reasonably easy to use but the video is simply too low so I thought I would get a better 360 video camera. After months of viewing Youtube videos, I decided that the Insta 360 One x2 (could they not find a longer name :-) was the camera I wanted. It has a ton of features and is really not easy to use, but I persisted.
The video has a max resolution of 5760x2880 which, while better than the MiSphere (3840x1920) is still not sharp enough. I guess you really need the pro 8K cameras for that.
The Insta 360 One X2 has a very nice piece of software (Insta 360 Studio) to process the "raw" camera files in a number of interesting ways, unfortunately, I am really not interested in "bullet time" etc, so those features are wasted on me. Still, the ability to "reframe" the video after shooting is nice.
The real problem is the user interface on the camera. It consists of a tiny (1") touchscreen. The tiny size makes it a challenge to select the correct feature icon and even when you do, it frequently ignored the touch, resulting in having to tap multiple times to get to the item you want. This screen has a selectable timeout to save battery. Unfortunately, once timed out, you can't get the screen back without restarting the camera! The smart phone app (I used the iPhone version) is much better at controlling the camera, making the touchscreen superfluous.
Anyway, since the quality of the still images was no better than the MiSphere (from 3 years ago!) and the video improvement was just not enough for me, I returned the camera. Maybe the next version will be the one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised

Tested out the waterproof ad (up to 10 meters). After a 5 meter dive, fuzzy lens, and after taking the battery out to assess the damage, found the battery with wet spots. I made sure the compartments were fully locked and closed before going in. Great camera, but not as advertised for light underwater filming.
