5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing mesh wifi system
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2021
I had a nice Asus AX6000 router before this system, but since switching from Spectrum Cable to TDS Fiber I could no longer have my router in the center of the house. I had to move it to the fiber box on the far corner of the house. This meant poor signal and speeds at the other end of the house. Since I could not move the fiber box due to a finished basement, I had no other choice but to try a mesh wifi system. I wanted to get a newer one that used AX/Wifi 6 so I could get good speeds everywhere with the fiber. This TP-Link Deco X90 mesh wifi system is amazing. I have a ranch that's about 2000sqft so this is probably over kill but I wanted the fast speeds everywhere and no weak spots. This system achieves that and it was very easy to get up. The only thing that was odd was when I set a device as high priority with the QOS it made speeds slower, so I turned that off and all is well. Make sure to update the firmware right away to make sure it runs well. Overall I highly recommend the Deco X90.

2.0 out of 5 starsTerrible software; missing key features. Fantastic range.. returning to Amazon, bummer!
Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021
OVERVIEW: I really wanted to love this: The price is FANTASTIC ($279) for a tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh networking solution. That sounds great! If you are reading this review, you are probably wondering, "What's not to love?" Well, here is the Achilles' heel for this and every other TP-Link mesh networking product: YOU CAN ONLY CONFIGURE IT ON YOUR SMART PHONE USING AN APP. That's right, you can't use a web interface on your computer! And there are several missing features. If you have basic needs & don't care about the below features, then this may be a good product for you. Otherwise, I strongly recommend considering something else.

REVIEW: OK, so one of the main reasons why TP-Link seems to be pushing use of an app is to make this easy to set up. The experience is very straightforward, walking you though the steps. I have a lot of experience setting up network gear, so was very appreciative of the great guided software setup. I am confident my mom would be able to install this (and she can barely figure out how to use the microwave). So good job on that, TP-Link.

One issue did occur during setup: I followed all the steps (including using MAC clone - thank you for including that in the setup options!), but the TP-Link router failed to connect to the internet (just had a red light, indicating an issue). I let it sit for about 10 minutes, then it magically fixed itself. I assume it was doing a firmware update or something along those lines, but the app didn't show anything. It would be good for TP-Link to check this and update the app/software, so users know what the setup is doing.

I knew I'd have to use an app to configure the product before buying this, and wondered to myself, "How bad could it be? I'm sure it has all the features, you just have to use the app." Well, it does have common features like Port Forwarding and the ability to set up a Guest network, for instance. But these are some features which are NOT present and are an absolute deal breaker for me:

* No MAC address filtering (just a blacklist to ban IPs): Ok, that's great that there's a blacklist, but how do you know who to block? And, I understand fully that MAC addresses can be spoofed and it is NOT a replacement for good encryption (WPA2, WPA3, etc.). But MAC address filtering is yet another feature that can be used to help strengthen a network. And TP-Link's mesh solutions do not have this feature, a basic option that has been available in networking products for over 10 years.

* No ability to create separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks: I'm sure many of you have smart plugs and other "internet of things" devices that only function on 2.4ghz bands. Well, with this product, you can't set up a separate WiFi network for them. I did some searching on the internet and TP-Link's suggestion is to set up the Guest network to only use 2.4ghz, and then put smart plugs on that. While that works.. this then means that your guests, if they use your guest network, will only have a 2.4ghz band to use. That's OK for basic stuff but to stream video and do other high-bandwidth activities, you'll want to use 5ghz. Hence, I don't think this is a good workaround. Some folks on TP Link support forums claimed they could create the main network as 2.4ghz only, join smart devices to that, THEN enable 5ghz and things still worked. But I was so frustrated by having to search support forums on this topic that I just left this as is.

* Guest network is TOTALLY isolated from main WiFi network and cannot talk to intranet devices: I use an adblocking server and have other resources within my network that I would like everyone on my intranet to be able to access (including those on my Guest network!) So as you saw above, smart plugs etc. can't talk on 5ghz so I tried the workaround to use a Guest network with only 2.4ghz. However, this broke several of my devices I put on the guest network, which were then unable to resolve DNS entries on the internet due to my setup leveraging an adblocker.. WHICH IS HOSTED ON THE MAIN WIRELESS NETWORK, as one would expect. There is also NO ability to toggle this setting at all. It is fixed in stone: Guest network devices will NEVER be able to talk to the intranet or other devices on your main WiFi network. This is clearly done for security, but since I am managing my own network, I know who should have access to what, and I should have the ability (in software!) to configure this the way I want to. Nope! Not possible with the current version of TP-Link's Deco app...

CLOSING THOUGHTS: If you have basic requirements (just need to setup a wireless network, don't care about smart devices using a 2.4ghz guest network, no custom adblocking solution and no need for deep configurability of your network), then this TP-Link product is a great value. The price is very reasonable, and the range/speed provided by this product is FANTASTIC. I had nearly 100% of my rated internet speed EVERYWHERE in my house, wirelessly, even though the TP-Link router was upstairs and the node was downstairs. They were using the 2nd 5GHZ band for wireless backhaul and it was amazing to see! I love the power and capability of the mesh system. I was concerned there were only 2 devices included (instead of 3), but TP-Link knows what they are doing with coverage and speed: No dead zones, and the product performed rock solid for the days that I had it.

However.. if you have other needs or aspirations for your network, and want more configurability, then this is not a good option. For a point of reference, consider how TP-Link compares to ASUS's fantastic software:
* MAC Address filtering: ASUS has it, TP-Link doesn't.
* Separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks for main WiFi network: ASUS has this, TP-Link doesn't.
* Guest network: Both offer guest networks, but ASUS offers the ability in some products (example: ASUS RT-AX3000, and I'm sure many others) to create up to *six* guest networks (three for 2.4ghz band, three for 5ghz band). And for each of those, you can control whether they are isolated or have access to your intranet. THANK YOU, ASUS!

By the way, I've used Netgear products as well (Nighthawk), and they also offer these features. Not sure why TP-Link isn't providing these basic features. Check the support forums for TP-Link and you'll see many threads where customers are complaining about this, and TP-Link mentions sometimes it'll be added to a future firmware release, but these threads are years old and this brand-new product still doesn't offer a complete feature set. So, if the software doesn't have what you need today, there is no guarantee it will tomorrow. If the product's current limitations fit your needs, then this product is highly recommended & you will be absolutely THRILLED and DELIGHTED by the speed and range of this system. Otherwise, I advise using something else.

I really wanted to like the TP-Link Deco X68, but the software and lack of configurability is a massive letdown. If I kept this, I would have had to reconfigure my network, figure out another way to block ads on my network, etc. Not worth the hassle.. so I returned this. The search continues for a good, affordable, Tri-Band WiFi-6 Mesh networking product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buggy Smart Home Signal Drop Fix!
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2021
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
First want to say went from 90mbps to 234mbps, - seriously fast. The Deco App works but the options are limited.

For starters there is no SSID differentiation between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz signal. Most smart home devices run on 2.4Ghz while everything else that matters runs on 5Ghz. As such my signals kept dropping and I'd have to keep connecting them. Drove me nuts!

Here is the fix. Turn off just the 2.4ghz signal from your "main network" using the Deco App. Go into your smart home App and see those devices not connected. Now delete/ disconnect those items from your smart home. Go back to the Deco App and turn on "guest Wifi." Rename it if you like and certainly add a password. On the guest network disable 5Ghz and make sure to enable just the 2.4Ghz.

Run your phone on that WiFi guest 2.4Ghz signal. Reconnect all of your 2.4Ghz smart devices to your smart home App over that Guest 2.4Ghz signal. Once they are all connected "forget guest wifi network" from your Wifi list and only run the main 5Ghz signal.

Problem solved!

4.0 out of 5 stars Performs well (but with a couple of disappointments)
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2021
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
We have upgraded our mesh system from TP-Link Deco M5 to X68. We have kept the M5 pucks, and as promised by TP-Link, X68 is indeed fully backward-compatible with M5. The system of switching from M5 (main) to X68 (main) was not exactly trouble-free, however, requiring several tries before the Deco app finally accepted X68 as the main. This particular process should have been clearer than what was on the TP-Link website.

Aside from said hiccup, X68 started working without any issue as soon as the installation and integration with the old M5 were completed. We hooked up the two X68 units to MOCA adapters because our house lacks the Ethernet connections. This process worked without a hitch.

The Wi-Fi speed is definitely better than what we had experienced with M5 alone, if not dramatically so.

The biggest disappoints we have experienced with X68 are the HomeShield, the equivalent of which with M5 was free but now requires a paid subscription, and the loss of the internet speed test, which was also included in the Deco app for M5. The latter was particularly useful because it measured the speed at the main unit which, being immediately connected to the modem, gave us accurate measurements of the internet speed that we were receiving from the ISP. We knock one star off this review due to these disappointments (along with the installation hiccup involving switching the main unit from M5).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great replacement for Netgear RBK50
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2022
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
I had the Netgear RBK50 with two satellite s and have two home offices and a teenager gaming all the time. After years of the RBK50 it was periodically rebooting and taking forever to come online so I figured let me try an upgrade. My home is about 2500 sqft with 3 floors (finished basement). I installed the base unit on the first floor and hard wired my LG C2 OLED tv to it and put the satellite in the basement, hard wiring my work computer. Upstairs is my wife's office and an Alienware gaming computer. We also have 3 Nest cameras streaming HD 24/7, thermostats, smoke detectors, three August doorlocks, Sense power monitoring and 3 iPhones, lots of traffic. I had no problem with my 2G devices coming online as other reported. I did have them all connect prior to updating the software. I work IT for my company so I need reliable remote connections and have VPN's running to 3 remote computers all day, video conferencing, etc. I have 500Mbps download service with Spectrum. Immediately my speed test jumped from 320Mbps with the Netgear system to 475MBps with the main router and 420MBps on the remote satellite . Speed jumps around between 320 and 400+ depending on how Spectrum throttles the connection. So far I have not seen a problem and are very happy. I didn't think only one sattelite would work but it did. Only problem I will warn you about is placement of the satellite is critical. I originally had it in the basement under my work table and the speed was 220 Mbps direct connect which bummed me out a bit. I simply move the router 3 feet to the top of the table so the signal was not blocked and it jumped to 420Mbps. So if you see slow speeds at the satelite play around with its location and it should improve speed. Been using it for a week now and no reboots and complete connectivity with all the computers and devices running. Since I do IT for a living I do hate their app as it is too simple and the web interface is a joke compared to the iPhone app's. The advanced feature just are not there for someone who knows what they are doing but the price is right and when I need my son to get offline I can easily toss him on the deny list and his gaming computer is offline. Don't need their subscription plan for that. I do wish they would spend some time and expose more settings to the user. Do know it took less than 15 minutes to have both units online and everything running, very simple and automated install. I am not using the Wifi 6 features, just 2G and 5G devices.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent tri band router, lacking some features
Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2021
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
This was easy to setup and does cover my house fairly well with the two units. Where it is lacking is in the feature department. All setup occurs within their app, as almost all other routers these days, say that's not a problem. The main issue is that you cannot choose which device connects to which bandwidth. My wife's computer in her office needs to stay on 2.4GHz because the 5GHz signal isn't that strong to her office. The router seems to decide daily which network her computer will be on, and when it's 5GHz, it becomes very laggy and she can't do her work efficiently. I had to create a guest network that was 2.4 only and just connect her computer to it. I have other devices that should be on 5 only, but always seem to connect to 2.4. Maybe you can find another brand that allows you to dictate network access to each device, and that would be my advice if possible. Other than that, it's a decent performer for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Need one more unit to cover my home
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2022
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
This unit product was easy to install. I bought this to replace my dead Netgear Orbi system ( router + 3 satellites ), I looked for a 3 unit system but only found the 2 unit. I was hopeful that this product would properly cover my home and it almost does. Unfortunately when I had the 2nd unit in my office where I need the LAN ports to go into my switch ( I have IP phone, printer and server plugged into it ) I didn't have enough of a signal in the other end of the house. So I moved the 2nd unit to that side of the house, which solved the coverage for that side of my home, but now I have my server and printer sitting in my living room where the router unit is, and my IP deskphone is offline for the time being. I assumed that I would be able to get an additional unit if this situation arose, but it looks like you can only buy in pairs. How stupid. If I could buy a single unit I'd really like this system, but if TP-Link doesn't offer a solution I'm going to have to return this thing, or do a ham-fisted solution of doing a wireless bridge to my switch, neither of which I really want to do.

Come on TP-Link give us some joy by offering single units!!

4.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE my DECOs, But...
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022
Style: AX3600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
I LOVE my new DECO X68's and have 6 of them in operation. They are all operating in simple WAP mode and are providing robust wifi coverage throughout my house, garage, etc. Fortunately, our house has cat 6e wiring throughout that I'm using to interconnect the 6 DECOs. Not sure if their reliability and performance would be as good if they depended on wifi interconnection for their backplane communication. Some of the distances are likely too great for wifi.
My reason for only 4 stars: I had to purchase a separate router (ASUS) to provide expert configuration capabilities that the DECOs sorely lack. The reason is that I have a large investment in numerous legacy-type IOT devices (e.g., thermostats, CO detectors, etc.) that do not work reliably if at all with the DECO's state-of-the-art wifi capabilities. Seems to me that the DECOs were designed for someone with a couple of smart TVs and iPhones, not a "power" user with an extensive & complex network.
The ASUS router was needed to configure a "Legacy" 2.4 GHZ wifi signal that all of my legacy devices can utilize without errors. It seems a waste to have spent another $200 on the Asus router basically for only this need. In addition, the Asus has an AWESOME user interface that allows power users to be in 100% control of the network.
I suggest that future releases of this product also provide an "expert" configuration capability along with a user interface that also runs on a Windows PC like my Asus and former Netgear routers. If the DECOs provided that capability, I would rate them a 5+++

4.0 out of 5 stars X90 Device Always on High Priority Setting
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2021
Style: AX6600 Tri-Band WiFi 6(New Model)Verified Purchase
I recently upgraded our cable internet service to 400 mbps and purchased a Motorola MB8611 cable modem. This modem only has one ethernet output port and no DHCP. (My 16 port Ethernet switch would not work when connected directly to the modem due to the modems lack of DHCP. No auto address assignments that a router would provide). I also have two TP Link X90 wireless mesh routers. The X90 provides excellent speed and coverage. (Very helpful for our WIFI phone use). I connected the modem to one of the X90’s and then my ethernet switch to the same X90. This provided the needed addresses for the switch to work but speed was about a third of what it should have been. After much investigative work, I found that the X90’s have a “high priority” option for each one of the connected devices. Appling this “high priority / always on” to my ethernet switch, almost tripled the output speed of the Ethernet switches connected devices. Hope this helps others that may have a similar configuration.

Powerful signal and easy installation. Tech Support gets 0 cuz I don’t have any reason for it, for now, and that’s a good thing. The app and browser can use an upgrade and more options, like ability to run your VPN of choice. Another thing is Ethernet backhaul. I have both ethernet connected and yet they use one of the 5 GHZ channels to communicate. Asus ZenWiFi AX6600 covers the deco negatives, and that’s why tp-link gets 4 stars. But price wins, and that’s why I returned Asus. Awesome features inside an affordable mesh. Highly recommended.

This was my first foray into a mesh network. The only reason that I did not give this 5 stars all the way across is because you have to use an app on your phone to setup your network. After you network has been setup you can log in via a browswer but you are limited to what you can do. A feature that would be nice is to be able to have your networks named differently, I mask my SSIDs. The only way you can do this is by turning your guest network on and naming it, which is counter productive to keeping my network secure and unseen. Overall though works really well, drastically improved my Wifi both in and outside of my house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Wi-Fi signal, very solid fast speeds.

The mesh routers work really well, it'll direct speed to devices that are drawing it or needing more. Such as web streaming video streaming etc.

You have to pay additional money to get all the homelink features that you used to get for free through the older tp-link routers.

Wi-Fi signals very strong, it's very easy to set up via your phone through the app.

I do wish you could set up the routers advanced features through the web UI on a computer. But you have to use the Deco app for every advanced change such as port forwarding, qos, etc.
