Niche B.
5.0 out of 5 starsIt’s a YES for me!
Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2021
So listen, a lot of y’all seem to have a lot to say on this here platform which leaves me wondering if you keep that same energy for non-Black content.

I mean we beg and beg for representation, for a seat at the table - but then we tear the table down before the meal even begins. My goodness. Every thing isn’t for everyone. If you didn’t like the show, cool. Watch something else. But what is this desire to tear down Black art. Because that’s what this is - art - and last I checked non-Black folks get to showcase and regurgitate their art on television and in cinema without the masses pulling out their pitchforks, because it wasn’t up to their so-called standards, because it reminds them of XYZ, because it doesn’t check every single arbitrary box, because it isn’t Oscar-worthy.

Some things just… are. It’s entertainment. We endure in REAL LIFE enough. We’ve finally entered an era where Black content doesn’t automatically include Black trauma/struggle. That . is . a . win.

Also, Black professional women (and men) with degrees, and good jobs, and multiple letters behind and in front of their names are allowed to be ratchet too, also, as well. If your friends group can’t talk, laugh, and enjoy all the things without a filter, are you really even friends.

Also, Meagan Good is an A-C-T-R-E-S-S. That is her whole profession. Playing fictional characters. She’s been doing that since she was a child and way before she got married to some man. So in what world does a woman decide to not perform the duties of her job/career/profession/passion because of what her husband does or doesn’t do for a living. It’s really time for some of y’all to leave that “first lady” trope at the altar. Please. Thank you. And Amen.

Also, gay people exist. Black gay people exist. And they deserve representation too. The end.

Also, the litter police LOL really LOL that’s where you draw the line LOL just say you hate the show and go LOL

And lastly, and I say this (somewhat) respectfully, to the non-Black people that have jumped on this here platform with commentary on Black life, Black womanhood, Black TV/cinema, and all things Black in general - don’t.

1.0 out of 5 starsI Am Very Disappointed
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2021
I had high hopes and I looked forward in watching the series 'Harlem'. I am so disappointed by the content in this series.

These are supposed to be 4 college educated professioinal black woman. However, the character Angie is acting like a hood rat. I don't like the lesbian character either because how many straight black females you know that hangs out constantly with a lesbian or vice versa? Black lesbians like to associate with other lesbians and not with heterosexaul women.

Some white people complained about segregation and only black characters in this series. Duh, we still live in a segregated society in the United States. I don't have any white friends nor do I hang out with white people in life. Even at work and in high school, the blacks hang out together and the whites do the same. I attended an HBCU school (Morgan State University) where Blacks were the majority on campus.

I was looking forward in seeing a series about 4 black professional women focusing on everyday life that we as black people deal with in our community and in society. Force diversity now on television and in the movies is not realistic in the real world.

Good taste
2.0 out of 5 stars cheap hollywood rubbish packed full of stereotypes
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2021
I wanted to love it. I missed Sex and the City, and relished in the idea of another series with four women leads.
The beginning part discussing some tribe in Asia called the Masuo, was trite and ridiculous.
To say it is a letdown is an understatement.
Cliche, shallow, stereotypes abound, and terrible writing.
Episode 1, minute 15:35 is a great example of this. It's another example of hollywood and big corporations demonstrating the continued perpetuation of divisiveness, as well as promoting segregation, like it's a good thing.
The lesbian character is kind of funny, and the character, Quinn, is well acted. Otherwise, nothing else seemed remarkable.
I agree with reviewer SB, the littering scene was gross.
The only time I laughed was when Whoopi Goldberg's character was giving the lead character a talking to.
The beginning of most of the episodes are BS academic sounding lectures of anthropology mixed with critical race theory; and just BS AF.
Despite all of this, I cannot stop watching the train wreck, as some of it is entertaining. I am human!
The end is so stupid, and an insult to strong black women everywhere. No self respecting woman goes chasing after a man like this. Definitely NOT feminism, if that's what they were going for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just stop it
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021
I got through the first episode. Turned off midway through the second. When the chunky girl, sorry I don't know the characters names and don't care to, used the "n" word, I cringed. This story line has been done already...successful black women who still marinade in wretchedness. I'm tired of this demographic representing the face of black women. Do better or just say no. We have enough of this level of tomfoolery already.

2.0 out of 5 stars Same story different title
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021
As an author myself, I was reluctant to leave a review b/c I didn't want to say anything negative. I know how it can be with bad reviews possibly keeping people from watching/reading. I didn't want that for them. Just wanted to contribute to the ratings and move on. But I can't just walk away. There was just too much that they tried to cram in, in a short amount of time. And the stories were jumbled. There was a review that said "Harlem" repeated a lot of the same tropes, and I strongly agree with that. I found myself asking, "How many issues are they going to try capturing in a short amount of time?" It was overwhelming, to say the least. And a lot of times the situations seemed way too rushed.

I don't want to do a long, drawn-out review, because I promise I could go on and on about this show. To offset with some positivity found, there were a few funny moments. And there were a few moments where the interactions seemed executed really well. Mostly with Tyler Lepley and Megan Good's interactions. With the space they were given they pulled it off. The scene with the Uber driver was pretty funny. Outside of that, not too much resonated with me.

Give it a chance and see if you like it. You may love it.

Congrats to them if they're offered a 2nd season. I just hope that if they are, they make some changes to smooth out the storylines a bit more.

2.0 out of 5 stars HARLEM thru HOLLYWOOD EYES
Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021
Calling this series Harlem does nothing to make it Harlem; not even the presently gentrified version. Have the writers really ever lived or worked in Harlem? Were there no better New York actors available? Megan Goode and the other female leads exude Hollywood sensitivities, except the one who tries too hard to be down, by acting like she needs to constantly get laid. I was born and raised in Harlem and raised three kids there; one daughter is a Yale grad and the other daughter attended an HBCU and is a journalist. Neither act like any of these young women. This seems like an attempt to borrow from Issa Raye's Insecure, but fails in every way. Furthermore, I doubt any savvy young lady from Harlem would hand her purse to a dude she really didn't know and go to the Ladie's room. Of course he booked with it!!! Duh! All-in-all, a cast of good-looking, youngish actors is not all it takes to make a series somewhat believable. Happy to see Whoopi doing her thing though, and special shout-out to Jasmine Guy as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just Another series on degrading black women
Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021
I started watching this and watched the first 10 episodes. I think the black women could be strong basically on their own. On this series you have women having sex with bisexual men. You have women who don’t know their preference. And also you have women breaking up marriages just to feel obligated to a man. You never actually see any movies that are healthy and make women believe in their selves. It’s all about tearing another person down. And all about becoming a whole different person when they get drunk. I watch the first 10 episodes and with the ending part Showing another confuse weak minded black woman break up a marriage I’m completely done with it. It’s not my cup of tea. 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

2.0 out of 5 stars Why did she have to litter?
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021
The show has potential, it made me laugh, and made me ponder, but the characters are kind of predictable, as every other show I’ve watch is the same. There’s nothing different or unique about it, so beside the cheesiness and weirdness what do the writers want to give us? also this show is a bit exaggerated. Did years pass by and she still was obsess with the guy? Why??? She’s not a powerful woman, she’s needy, and ridiculous for holding on to a relationship that died years ago and then still desiring him and chasing him while he was engaged. Not good!! Oh and to the writers, the part where she eats her ice cream and puts it anywhere instead of a trash can, GREAT way to show how we should treat the world. shows and movies work like advertisements, you put it out there people think it’s okay. Whether is political, religion, or making fun of vegans, which, WHY? And again, the littering, not okay!! I’m not looking forward to another season.

2.0 out of 5 stars Harlem - Season 1
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022
I love Whoopi Goldberg to death, she is funny as hell, which is why I wanted to watch Harlem. I wanted to love it, but Im sorry to say I almost made it to the end of the first pilot show, I had 7 mins to go and just had to move on. Then I thought I would give it another try and watched the second & third episodes. Im also sorry to say that in that short time I just saw what has turned me away for shows like this, is just the same old-same old stuff and boring to me. An annoying friend who lives rent free with her friend contributes nothing but a lazy attitude. Whom no one in their right mind would be friends with in real life. The other ladies are all bad at picking men/women to share their lives with. I expected a stronger women force who took charge of their lives, I was just disappointed. Maybe I should have watched more but I couldn’t. You should give it a go and make your own decision, not just take my word.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled potential
Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2021
Pilot episode: One of the leads, Quinn, an elegant, put together, trust fund baby, fashion designer goes on a Dating App date all the way out in Long Island. The date picks a loud nightclub and a club-goer spills red wine on Quinn. To emphasize the "really bad date" situation, the writers have a sober Quinn ask the stranger/date to watch her purse while she cleans up in the restroom. When she returns, he has left, bar tab is unpaid, and her purse has also disappeared leaving her stranded on Long Island. Come on, no one leaves their purse with a stranger. A pilot is supposed to be your best shot.
