5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent mesh routers
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2022
It’s very easy to set up these routers. Just install the Deco app from the App Store or Google Play. Then power up the device and follow the instructions on the screen. One thing that is a little inconvenient is the fact that you need to create a TP-Link account to setup and operate the Deco X55. Connecting the additional Deco routers is very easy. Power them on, and that’s it; they automatically connect to the primary router.

Mesh means that all your routers connect with each other, forming a mesh of coverage rather than having one router that acts as a single point of connection. Your wireless device will always connect automatically to the mesh router that provides the strongest signal. This is called Roaming. Much like in telecom/mobile networks, your Wi-Fi devices might change positions and move around your house. This means that the wireless signal between your device and the router gets weaker with distance. With the Deco mesh routers your device will automatically connect to a different Deco unit that offers a stronger signal, without interrupting the running service and streams. This not only increases the coverage vastly, but also offers seamless handovers and transitions of Wi-Fi services as you change your position in your house. In other words, you get Wi-Fi Roaming capabilities that will vastly improve the reliability of your wireless connection.

It’s worth mentioning that the Deco X55 is compatible with all other Deco products from TP-Link. You can expand the mesh Wi-Fi coverage at any moment by connecting a Deco device to your home network. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that too many mesh devices might have the opposite effect. I noticed that after installing the three X55 routers, I would get these “pockets” of no connectivity even though I would be within range of the routers. I suspect that offering too many mesh connectivity choices with almost equally strong signal to your device might lead to constant roaming hops and eventually bad connectivity. Start small, with two devices, and install the third one if needed.

The X55 comes with Wi-Fi 6 technology, with up to 3 Gbps bandwidth. This capability, with its high speed and low latency, promises not only ultra fast download speeds but also glitch free Ultra HD streaming and lag free gaming, provided that your Internet connection can support such quality as well. Advanced features such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO are of course there with Wi-Fi 6.

So far I have no complaints regarding the X55’s performance. The Wi-Fi is very quick and outperforms my internet connection. I haven’t noticed any issues with latency either. One remark I want to make here is that, even though older WiFi cards will still be able to connect and operate with the X55, you will need a Wi-Fi 6 compatible wireless card to make the most out of the Deco mesh system. Making the most out of it doesn’t mean that you will experience speeds close to 3 Gbps. These speeds are a theoretical maximum and they are impossible to see in the average home network setup. You will see, though, very high speeds depending on the quality of your wireless adapter (in my tests, I used the TP-Link WiFi 6 AX3000 PCIe WiFi Card), the distance from the router and the obstacles that separate you from it. Bottom line: it’ll be fast, but be realistic with your expectations.

Regarding the amount of supported devices, the Deco X55 can serve up to 150 connected devices at the same time. Even though I don’t have 150 devices at my disposal, I can confirm that the X55 supports successfully my 57 connected devices.

Through the smartphone app, you can monitor the network usage of these devices real time. Moreover, in an effort for some easy Quality of Service, you can prioritize any of these devices in terms of network resources with the toggle of a switch. This feature is a wink to power users who would like to prioritize bandwidth/latency sensitive applications.

On the back of the X55 you will find three Gigabit Ethernet ports and, of course, the power connector.

The Deco X55 is mostly operated via the smartphone Deco app. All the monitoring and configuration that you need or may do happens through your smartphone. You do get access to it through your computer’s browser, but it’s mostly for viewing rather than managing. Since this is purely related to software, I do hope that TP-Link will reconsider and give us a future firmware update with full browser GUI functionality.

TP-Link has equipped the Deco X55 with what the company calls HomeShield. That is a bundle of security and performance management features that serve to improve the user experience under the hood. HomeShield will provide reports regarding security vulnerabilities of your home network, as well as network performance and potential optimizations.

The Deco X55 is very easy to the eyes. Its round shape and wavy top, with the smooth uniform surface and the white color give it a nice and modern look, following a trend that Apple launched over a decade ago and many manufactures are choosing for their products. TP-Link chose to put a status led on the front bottom side, making it look almost like a backlight as it reflects against the supporting surface. That’s a nice touch. One interesting design feature is an edge on the top of the router. It gives the product a distinct design feature and makes the looks of it a bit more interesting.

One thing I didn’t like about the Deco X55 is the fact that you need to create an account to enjoy the product. It’s an industry trend, not something specific to TP-Link, but it’s still annoying.

Finally, the web GUI. You can manage the X55 only via the smartphone app. Convenient to have it in your phone, but power users could use a full features browser GUI. TP-Link, if you’re listening, make this happen with a future upgrade. There is no reason why such a good product should not give the user full control through the computer browser. Period!

Final thoughts? I am so far really enjoying the TP-Link Deco X55 mesh system. It’s fast, reliable, easy to configure and provides excellent coverage and roaming. This is a great product and, if TP-Link provides a full featured web GUI, it’ll become an excellent product. The pricing is quite competitive, when compared to similar solutions in the market. Overall I would definitely recommend the TP-Link Deco X55 if you’re in the market for a mesh router system. 4.5/5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 starsStopped working after latest update.
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2022
I bought this to replace my aging Orbi Mesh System which kept dropping wifi connections on a daily basis. What I liked about this product is that it has 3 ethernet ports on each unit. Aside from Orbi, there is no other mesh system (at least to my knowledge) that has this many ethernet ports at the back of the unit.
Now, as far as installation of this product, it was a p.i.t.a. I could not get it to work properly. I would keep getting the dreaded "red" light during installation which means that it could not reach the internet. I tried rebooting this product and it worked for a few minutes until I updated it with the latest firmware. After updating, that was it! The red light on the unit would not go away. Without hesitation, I packed it up and returned it and bought another brand which by the way, has currently no issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted this to work, but mesh pods won’t link when placed around my 2500sq ft home
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2022
Style: AX3000, 3-packVerified Purchase
The problems I faced with this product could absolutely be unique to the construction of my home, but I was not able to create a mesh network unless all three WiFi pods were within about 10 feet of each other. The description from TP-Link claims this product will deliver 6500 square feet of gigabit broadband over WiFi 6, but I was not able to create coverage anywhere close to that level — more like 500 sq feet at best.

This seems like a well-built and consumer-friendly product, and the install was remarkably simple. It just didn’t scale from test setup to workable home mesh network that covered my entire home.

The speeds this mesh network delivered in my first test when all three mesh pods were linked effortlessly in a ~650sq ft room where my existing gigabit broadband connection hardware and WiFi router live? Consistently just shy of gigabit down speed, no matter how many devices I larded onto the mesh network and unaffectedly fast even with the dozen ridiculous bandwidth-gobbling tasks I set up concurrently to stress test the limits of the mesh technology.

So it’s not a fundamental product defect or some underreported aspect of mesh networking that’s a problem in my case: I am sold that mesh WiFi and WiFi 6 are the future, and I’ve seen why having this product up and running inside my home.

What is a dealbreaker (in my circumstance, in the materials used to construct my home, with the heavy WiFi saturation from neighbors and nearby businesses crowding the WiFi airspace allotted here) is that:

❌ The great test setup results when the three pods were within 10 feet of each other in a wide open room should have—according to what TP-Link says—continued to deliver once I moved two of the three mesh pods to the other side of my place (and onto the second floor where my home office sits). They did not, and the pods failed to see each other when moved. That made gigabit WiFi into zero WiFi, with maybe a dozen pod placement variations I tried.

❌ any time I tried a pod placement scheme where the mesh pieces were not within sight of each other or more than 10 feet from each other…the mesh network simply failed to ID the moved mesh pods or register them on the mesh network. TP-Link heavily promotes this mesh product as the solution to get reliable WiFi throughout any home, up to 6250 sq ft, both inside and out and across multiple floors.

My place is definitely smaller than 6250 sq ft, and my two floors of living space are much smaller than what’s illustrated on TP-Link mesh product marketing stuff.

I didn’t find a way to make this work in my circumstance. I will keep my faith in mesh WiFi, though, and trust I’ll find a mesh solution that is geared to the conditions defining my otherwise lovely home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Three Nodes Outshone by One AT&T BGW320-500
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2022
Style: AX3000, 3-packVerified Purchase
I had high hopes for the Deco X55 WiFi 6 Mesh System. Unfortunately the product fell far short of my current two-year-old WiFi, a single AT&T BGW320-500 modem / wireless router.

The single AT&T modem provides better throughput on both phones and laptops throughout my house. I even placed one of the Deco nodes in my home office (the AT&T modem is in another room) and it still fell far short of the speeds provided by BGW320.

The only thing the Deco X55 system does better than the BGW320 is provide better connectivity to my patio. That's nice, but that's simply not a good enough return on the investment.

The Deco X55 system could be a good choice for some, but it's not good fit for me.

On the plus side, set up is quick and easy. The required app is helpful, but I did not dig into the details, as I intend to return the product.

Part of the problem is a misunderstanding on my part of mesh networks. All mesh products that I researched, included this one, make it sound like expanding coverage in your home (and outside of your home) is as easy as adding another access point. The product descriptions make it sound like each node acts not only as an access point, but also as a relay to the main node (the one connected to your modem). This is the way I assumed mesh networks work.

That is not the case, at least not for the Deco X55. Each satellite node must communicate with the main node rather than the nearest node. So if you add a new node far away from your main, the new node will only broadcast a weak signal (if it connects at all), and you'll get very low throughput.

I read a review earlier on mesh networks (unfortunately I can't recall where so I can't give credit) that said they are better described as star networks; each satellite node must connect to a central main node. The star analogy is very appropriate.

Hopefully some vendor has a true "mesh" network available that will provide coverage and throughput that exceeds what I currently have. If not, I'll wait until someone invents it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly disappointed.

I'll start by saying install of the first unit was as simple as could be. The second unit took 3-4 attempts to get it to connect to the first from about 40 feet away. I don't know why, but it did. Next, the speeds are attrocious compared to the default att router. I get between 5-900 on the att router, and between 100-600 on the TP link router. I got these because I have a small dead spot in my master bedroom I wanted to fix, and I have had issues with some of my smart home clients dropping out. I got this because of the max device allowance and assumed it would get at least the same speeds as my att router. Pretty irritated to only see between 1/3 to 1/2 of the speeds from the same distance and same devices. These speeds attached were taken 5 minutes apart from the same location within my house. All I did was change the router connected to. I will keep them because I had promos I used on them, so it was pretty cheap for me to buy. But I am really disappointed compared to what I expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good system but slightly dishonest parental control advertisement

System works good and was easy to set up the main router and the other two units. Renaming devices and other settings were obvious. Adding family member device groups was easy enough and setting internet limits for every day of the week.

Where the product falls short is anything other than everyday start/end times for a device's or group of devices' allowed internet time. You have to pay a premium monthly/annually in order to set different times for weekends versus weekdays. Everyday, Weekdays and Weekends, and Custom Days are something that has been included in even the most archaic router firmware since my Timer Warner days.

I didn't need time rewards as the box stated was an example of "Premium" control features. Product stated basic Parental Controls. Basic parental controls have been established in the marketplace by less advanced, cheaper products. -2 stars for holding basic features hostage via SAS, and wasting my time and money.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of potential that fell short with limited software

I've been using TP-Link devices for a while and they provide best value for the money. However, this one fell short on software and setup. Though the initial install is easy and it seems great, there are some fundamental issues with the ease of setup.

I've used previous TP-Link Wi-Fi routers and it provide the ability to setup a guest network, had options segregate it from private Wi-Fi, and / or allow the devices to talk to each other on the guest network. For some reason, TP-Link decided it is no longer necessary to separate the guest from private network. All the devices on the guest network can see the devices on the private network. TP-Link even suggest in the app, to secure your network turn off the guest Wi-Fi. I did not expect such low level software after using several of their models over the years. Needless to say, i returned it and will be getting something else that support proper guest Wi-Fi (or wireless VLAN). Very DISAPPOINTED with this TP-Link.

Thought TP-Link would be an upgrade to my google nest system. I was wrong, should’ve just purchased another pod or whatever they’re called instead of these. I had to go through my IP to have them remove Wi-Fi from modem which was a major pain in the….neck. Then had to reconfigure every smart home device to new network several times. Alexa is still confused. Now that I have it set up’ the damn thing drops my network every few minutes. The app is pretty much worthless for trouble shooting. The only thing I like about this system is having one network instead of five with the last setup. That is the only positive I have to give unfortunately

The mesh seems to work really well, however, the hardware leaves a lot to be desired. Mostly with the power chord. The power block is the largest I’ve seen on any device. Period. The side oriented power block mounts sideways and appears to be about 5 inches long. You cannot discretely plug this is anywhere. Also, the power chords themselves seem extremely cheap. They have the quality of cheap phone cords from the 90’s. Don’t let your children or your vacuum around the power wires. If this product had better equipment I would rate at 5 stars.
